BG Brown Summed Up What Was Going To Happen In The Fishing Industry In Gloucester 4 Years Ago

This was filmed in 2010 and it’s only gotten worse. What he predicted back in 2010 is about 10 times worse 4 years later.
As I type this a fisherman just left my office. He is 52 years old and has fished his whole life. He is a stern man meaning he has no stake in what the owner of the boat may receive when he sells out his commercial fishing permits. He has only seen it get worse and worse and was telling me he has absolutely no idea what he could do for a living since all he knows is fishing.  It’s sad and it is despicable what they did when they instituted Catch Shares and privatized the ocean and fish. Before Catch Shares there were hundreds of small boats with stern men who could go out and catch 800 lbs of cod under the “Days at Sea” program. They could fish every day and because there was an 800 pound limit there were no 20-40,000 lb trips of fish on the auction to decimate the price. What was on the Fish Auction for fish was made up of lots of small boats 800 lb trips of quality day boat fish.  So you had hundreds of boats with hundreds of captains and hundreds more of stern men making a good living while barely impacting the fish stocks. Boats were being repaired, boats were buying fuel, families were being fed.  Now we have probably 80% less.
Just years later the hyper-consolidation of Catch Shares which we all knew was the inevitable result when you privatize a natural resource has decimated our fleet and the number of fishermen left standing while they most have either sold out or are trying to.

Back in 2009 I started to collect the stories and add them to a thread on Cape Ann Online as sort of a journal and record for those who might have said they didn’t see this coming. There are three pages of articles from fishermen and about how it was and has decimated our working port and independent fishermen.

Restaurants In Cape Cod Serving Icelandic Cod 3.1.2014

Restaurants In Cape Cod Serving Icelandic Cod
3.1.2014
Words by Nanna Árnadóttir

Due to fishing restrictions in New England, restaurants in Cape Cod have stopped serving local cod in favour of Icelandic cod.
Cod once sustained New England’s fishing industry, but in recent years, regulators have imposed severe catch limits on cod, and the fish remain scarce,

Old Christmas Greysole Fishing Trips

Sam Novello writes-

Dear Joe,

In the past, large Gloucester fishing draggers made annual Christmas fishing trips off the coast of Nova Scotia at a greysole “honeyhole.”  I believe your grandfather may have even found this spot.  From what I understand, the boats used to take turns fishing through this spot one at a time and filling their nets with tows of 25,000 lbs of greysole per tow being common.  This area is now closed to U.S. fisherman because of its location in Canadian waters.  I believe the last Gloucester boats to fish these grounds were in the Joseph & Lucia fleet approximately 25 years ago.  I have always been interested in this old “Christmas trip” and was wondering if any of your readers might have any knowledge or information about these trips and the location of this old greysole honey-hole. Thanks!

Happy Holidays!

On Wednesday, Skipper James Wood (on the forklift in the video) and his crew loaded and set up twenty brand new lobster traps aboard Still Kicking at the Intershell  Seafood wharf on Commercial Street. Wood, who lobster fishes year round, was checking the latest weather forecasts before heading out to Jeffrey”s Ledge, a fishing ground that runs northeastward from Cape Ann.

The Fleet

DSC00888

Traditionally I suspect when people think of the Gloucester Fleet or Gloucester Fishermen they think of large draggers, wooden or steel.  Fact is probably over 90% of our fleet are boats less than 50 feet in length and most are made of fiberglass.  Sure there are a few draggers left but that subsector of Gloucester’s fleet is miniscule compared to what it once was.

This morning in the office our fishermen were having a conversation about how many fishermen and lobstermen are due to retire within the next 10 years.  The last great generation of fishermen to fish out of this port are nearing retirement.  The last generation of fishermen who can remember Gloucester fishing when it was humming.

Jimmy Santapaola Jr. and his crew of the Amanda Leigh are setting out early this year for monkfish off of New London, CT. Their catch will be sold primarily to the foreign market and presented on tables stuffed whole.

Monkfish live on the sea floor and can be found about 30 miles offshore this time of year. As the waters warm up in the spring they will go out about 70 miles. The 12″ mesh net used for trapping them will allow the small ground fish to swim through without being caught.

Updated! Photos of Fisherman/woman Statue from Scandinavia

This just in-

Hi Joey-

I  arrived home from Iceland last evening and was catching up on GMG posts when I saw that Sarah Clark had posted some great photos of other fisherman statues. She commented that she wished she had a GMG sticker when she had taken them so I must have taken this photo for her!

Hi, Joey,
Here are a fisherman and fisherman’s wife statues from Alesund, Norway. Next to them are two views of the fishermen’s statue in Reykavik, Iceland. Wish I had thought to have a Good Morning Gloucester sticker when I took these!  Just thought folks in Gloucester might enjoy these.
