Well the other day Tony was hauling lobster traps and off his gear fell a seahorse which are pretty rare to catch up in our waters. His lovely wife Abbie sent us the picture-

1 in 100 Million, Huh? Second Albino Caught In A Year By A Captain Joe and Sons Lobsterman

John Todd Writes In-

Joe,

I forgot to mention when I offloaded yesterday that I had caught an albino lobster in the harbor. I took a few photos with my phone that I thought you might like to see and maybe post on the GMG page. I was going to bring it in but just after I took the last photo a homie dove down and grabbed it off the table, probably thinking it was something other than a lobster due to it’s color. It dropped it just off the back of the boat and out of reach, although I think it was short anyhow. I looked it up and they said it is as rare as 1 in 100 million. I know you had one a while back from Mike Tupper so perhaps they aren’t so rare or they just like to come to Gloucester for the hospitality!

Sustainability ratings (via northshorewaterman)

UGHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Wasn’t it just last year when they said they wouldn’t sell lobsters any more because they considered it inhumane to hold them in crates?
Read Doug Maxfield- the most honest fisherman I haven’t had the pleasure to meet.

Bloomberg business published an article this week regarding Whole Foods efforts to apply sustainability ratings to its seafood (http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D9I73COG1.htm).  With Walmart and Target Corp removing several species from its retail stores this past year and Trader Joe’s announcing that it will only sell sustainable seafood by 2012, the green wave continues to spread.  And, while these companies simply want to make tons … Read More

Nautical themes will have a strong influence… look for SNS Herning and Inis Meain knits this season. From the Norfolk Museums and Archeology Service on the older traditional sweaters worn by fishermen:

Lanes Cove Bluefish Tournament Pictures From Stephanie Viera

Hi Joey,
Here are some photos I wanted to share from the Bluefish Tournament in Lanes Cove on Sunday. I’ve never been to an event like this. I had a lot of fun photographing it. As I watched the fish get weighed, I thought it would have been great to be taking pictures from one of the fishing boats. Maybe next year!
Hope you can use them on GMG!
Thanks,
Stephanie Vieira

The latest outrage (via northshorewaterman)

Here’s the latest from Doug Maxfield. The man that boils it all down and make sense of the nonsense. (or at least shines a bright light on it)

The latest outrage In Staying consistent with their efforts to drive fishermen out of business, NMFS has just this week cut the remainder of the common pool fisheries efforts in half for the 2010 fishing season.  The common pool, or  'days at sea' system will now be charged for two 24 hour days the second they leave the shore.  This action comes just three months into the season in which many fishermen were given only 21 days to fish.  Truth be told, everyone invol … Read More

The Orlando and Asaro Families Say Thank You After Emotional Fisherman’s Memorial Service

We would like to extend a thank you to the Fishermen’s Memorial Service Committee members and all who attended for such a beautiful event at the Stacey Boulevard on Saturday, August 28th. Our family is grateful for the opportunity to convey with the community our history and sorrow for the loss of the ill fated Inca fishing vessel in 1944. Through sharing our story we found how our personal thread is so tightly woven into a preverbal quilt fabricated to comfort and protect the traditions so lovingly cherished by families of this city of fishermen.

Sincerely,

The Orlando and Asaro Families

Johnny “Doc” Herrick Catches A Triggerfish

We don’t see these too often.  About once or twice a year.  Dave Jewell caught one a year or two ago and we got some video for you below.

This picture was taken by FOB Joey Ciolino when Joey and Frank Ciolino paid a visit to the dock yesterday afternoon.

Here is the post from August 9,2009 with the Triggerfish that Aaron on the Lady Margaret caught.  Obviously it’s the warmer waters that bring these unusual fish up off our coast.

Linda rae Castagna Writes About The Fisherman’s Memorial Service

My husband Rob and I come as often as possible to visit your wonderful area.  Thank you for all your work on GoodMorningGloucester – it keeps up up to date.  Yesterday we visited the Fisherman’s Memorial Service, thanks to your mention of it.  Thought you might want a couple of pictures from the experience and separately I will send the video from my iPhone.  Very moving service for two people who realize that it is because of these hardworking men that we have our favorite seafood whenever we want it.  Very humbling, to say the least.  Linda and Rob Castagna

Trapper John Setting Lobster Traps In 12 Foot Seas Yesterday

Steve Clings On To The Totes Of Bait While George Gets Ready To Hand Set Each Trap Off The Stern.

Good Times!

This is the kind of work for only the hard core.  Most men would be curled up in the fetal position down below puking their brains out. But the boys aboard the Trapper John slogged their way through a brutal day at sea.
