New resident to God’s Country (East Gloucester) Brianmoc has the best Striper fishing website that I’ve ever seen. I’ve been a fan of his photography and video work for years but it wasn’t til just yesterday that I realized that he hosted all of his work on his website www.brianmoc.com
There are lures that work, fishing reports, tide charts, weather but the best of all Brian’s incredible photography and fishing videos.
I added Brian’s site into the blogroll to the right for easy reference in the future.

The air is redolent with June’s dreamy scents–Virginia sweetspire, mock orange and rose, Oyama magnolia and honeysuckle, and none more heady than our luxuriant, native sweet bay magnolia (Magnolia virginiana).
Located in the heart of Ravenswood Park in Gloucester there is a stand of Magnolia virginiana growing in the Great Magnolia Swamp. It is the only population of Magnolia virginiana known to grow this far north. I took one look at the native sweet bay magnolia and breathed in the fresh lemon-honeysuckle scent of the blossoms, fell in love, and immediately set out to learn all I could about this graceful and captivating tree. Recently having returned from a trip to visit my family in northern Florida, I had tucked the bud of a Magnolia grandiflora into my suitcase. I was dreaming of someday having a garden large enough to accommodate the Magnolia grandiflora and was overjoyed to discover the similarities between M. virginiana and
M. grandiflora. For those not familiar with the Southern magnolia, it is a grand, imposing specimen in the landscape, growing up to fifty feet in the cooler zones five and six, and one hundred feet plus in the southern states. M. grandiflora is the only native magnolia that is reliably evergreen in its northern range, flowering initially in the late spring and sporadically throughout the summer. The creamy white flowers, enormous and bowl-shaped (ten to twelve inches across), emit a delicious, heady sweet lemon fragrance.

Mark Burnett recently joined twitter and will be live tweeting during the show. As you know Mark Burnett doesn’t spare any expense and the production values for this show will be over the top (like everything else he does, like Survivor for example).

On the premiere episode, “Sun! Sand! Sahara!,” the 13 teams of ordinary Americans set out on the adventure of a lifetime across the ancient kingdom of Morocco, battling rugged terrain, untamable animals and each other. After facing the sand dunes of the Sahara and the cliffs of Todra Gorge, one team will be eliminated.
Adventurer, zoologist, big cat trainer and all around risk taker Dave Salmoni hosts the show.
Featuring high adventure and human drama, “Expedition Impossible” follows 13 teams of 3, racing in a fun expedition across vast deserts, over snow capped mountains and through raging rivers in the beautifully exotic, fabled kingdom of Morocco. Each week a new stage of the expedition will be revealed to the teams. Will they crumble under the pressure of having to think clearly in the wilds of the great outdoors, or will they find a way to work together to complete their adventures? And if one person quits, the entire team is eliminated. After 10 stunning legs of competition with drama, comedy and great characters, one team will cross the finish line first to claim victory. Each winning team member will receive $50,000 ($150,000 total for the team) as well a new Ford Explorer.
Here’s a four part video series I taped with the guys-
When most people visualize Gloucester, they imagine a fisherman casting his nets, or the white sands of Good Harbor Beach, or the excitement of spotting a whale as it rises from the ocean’s depths. Now, thanks to many active artists and art organizations, Gloucester is on its way to reestablishing its reputation as a center for the arts.
The city made the grade as a popular arts destination in an article appearing in the summer edition of AmericanStyle magazine. Gloucester was ranked third in the small-city category with other cities that had a population below 100,000. The top two spots were taken by Asheville, N.C., and Santa Fe, respectively.
School let out on Friday for a lot of kids, and Summer started for a lot of families that afternoon. I just wanted to share our camp guide with parents that still may be looking for a summer program or camp for their child this summer, or are looking to fill any gaps that may have come up in their scheduled activities. A lot of programs and camps are full already, but there are plenty out there that still have openings…
North Shore Kid has developed THE tool for parents searching for the right camp or summer program for their child. The North Shore Kid 2011 Summer Program & Camp Guide is an easy-to-use, searchable, extensive resource online that includes:
Featured camps
Stories about camps and summer programs
A proximity search that will list camps within a radius that you determine based on a zip code you enter.
A category cloud that will list camps in that category when you click it.
Our guide includes many camps and summer programs from the North Shore of Massachusetts, Cape Ann, Boston and beyond. Our listings typically include information like a synopsis of the camp and its location (with a map on the click through). Additional information includes contact phone numbers & emails, website links, registration download links, facebook pages and twitter links. We have also put a lot of work into our tagging system in an eefrot to help parents focus or expand their searches based on program activities and philosophies. Listing range from focused sports camps to typical day camp settings to high tech computer summer programs to island camps!
Parents who are looking to save time and focus on the right program for their child should check it out here: http://www.northshorekid.com/camps
One of our very own Backyard Growers, Phoebe Potts, has created the Backyard Growers FUN PAGES – a simple, visual guide to the basics of starting a raised bed vegetable garden in the city. Enjoy the adorable little shape people as they happily lead you to the joy and fulfillment of growing your own food! Hurray Phoebe! You are a true believer in the cause!
And then scroll down to the RESOURCES section, which will link you to local and mail-away suppliers, websites where you can learn more gardening information, and our partners’ websites.
Good Morning Gloucester was granted exclusive access to the final dress rehearsal of Greasy Pole -The Musical before its opening on June 16. All we can say is that if you are lucky enough to have tickets or intend to get them, you are in for a real treat. This production could have just as easily been titled, Gloucester-A Celebration of Community. It will warm your hearts and remind you of what this place is all about.

Baking temperatures and sweltering humidity have their appropriate months, but early June is too soon for the recent 95-plus degree days! I am grateful for this cooler weather—our newly planted vegetables and annuals will have an easier transition out of the melting temperatures of last week. On another note, our daughter Liv is preparing to attend NYU Steinhardt Masters of Music program this coming fall. To make this dream of hers come true she is working many long hours with a combination of three jobs. If anyone knows of an apartment to share or sublet please let us know. She is hoping to find something downtown, relatively close to NYU and/or public transit but will consider nearly any arrangement
This is the ideal time of year to prune your lilacs, immediately after flowering (attached article). See blog for photos of several native companion plants for lilacs. The photos from the lilac posts and the flower power post were shot with the new Fujifilm x100—a truly fantastic, albeit quirky, camera. I am so looking forward to spending fun times getting to know this camera and will once my design jobs settle into their seasonal rhythm.
Perhaps we will have another summer similar to last year’s, with days on end of warm temperatures and minimal rain, the ideal weather for butterflying (we can hope!). Last week’s warm temperatures brought a Monarch to Willowdale and our garden was rife with angelwings, azures, and swallowtails.
