Big Bear Hug!
Fred Bodin gives the Kodiak Bear Family sculpture a “bear hug” during a special preview on the grounds of the Chris Williams sculpture studio in Essex, MA. I am 6’1″ tall, and males of this species of bear grow to over 10′ tall when standing on their hind legs. The tree the bear family is climbing is 17′ high. The Kodiak bear is to scale! Kodiak, or brown bears, are named after an island of the same name in Alaska.

Gloucester, MA—The Rocky Neck Art Colony hosts an evening with Gordon Goetemann, artist and long time Rocky Neck resident, at the Cultural Center on Wonson St, Sunday, October 19, at 7:00 PM.
Many people here in Gloucester and on the East coast are familiar with the work Gordon Goetemann has produced and exhibited locally but very few have any knowledge of the Minnesota paintings executed over a span of forty years. Many of these works will be shown and discussed at this special talk on the heels of his recent exhibition at the Cultural Center. Taken together as a body of work, Goetemann talks about the role nature has played in the formation of his values and the content of his art as well as some innate characteristics of his work such as, a micro/macro sense of scale and the dichotomy of an illusory space and the facts of a flat picture plane.
Goetemann constantly affirms that he is a landscape painter, and more specifically, that he is a NORTHERN landscape painter. He talks about how his northern-European, Germanic heritage has informed his temperament, feelings and modes of expression. As he often says,” As an artist I have led two lives and worn many hats”.
This event is free to the public; donations to support the work of the art colony are always gratefully received.

YOU’RE INVITED: OCT 15 ART RECEPTION TO HELP WOUNDED VETS
You’re invited to attend an art exhibition opening reception, featuring photographs of wounded veterans by Rockport-based artist, Thi Linh Wernau. “YOU. ARE. BEAUTIFUL. – A Tribute to Warriors” will feature 35 photographs from a series intended to honor the sacrifice of our wounded veterans, empower them with a vehicle for voice through art and inspire and help other veterans in need. A number of the veterans in this project will be in attendance at the reception.
In addition, the evening will help raise awareness of the invisible wounds of war, especially PTSD (post-traumatic stress) and TBI (traumatic brain injuries). The event will help support The Red Sox Foundation and Mass General Hospital Home Base Program, who provide clinical services to veterans and their families. Complimentary drinks and light appetizers will be provided. Attendance is free, but RSVP is requested by October 8.

Exhibit at Rocky Neck Cultural Center, October 2 – October 26, 2014
Public Reception Sunday, Oct. 5, 2 – 4 p.m.
Synthesis II: Endicott College and Montserrat College of Art Faculty and Student Exhibit, will be on view at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson St., Gloucester, Thursday, October 2 – Sunday, October 26.
A public opening reception will be held on Saturday, October 5 from 2 – 4 pm.
The show will feature the works of Endicott College faculty members Meg Black, Krystal Demaine, Mari LaCure, Michael Miller, Carol Pelletier, Cynthia Roberts, Dean – Mark Towner, and Miles Warner. Montserrat College of Art faculty exhibiting are Judith Brassard Brown, Greg Orfanos, Justin Gagne, Gabrielle Keller, Lisa Perkins, Robert Roy, Julia Shepley, Blyth Hazen and Len Thomas-Vickory.
Students from both colleges will also have their works on view. Endicott exhibiting students are: Stephanie Alvarado-Ross, Samantha Hensel, Kayla Hodgetts, Alicia Luong, Suzie Newman, Kara Summerly, Graham Swayze, and Ruby Wallace-Ewing.
Montserrat College of Art students exhibiting are Adam Kooken, Mike Outhouse, Anthony Corrado, Katherine Roldan, Rory Bastille, Kerry McDermott, Alecia Parent/ Rebecca Segar collaborative piece and Chelsea Nee. Their work is from a semester-long documentary project of the plant and workers at the Salem Harbor Power Plant which was on display last June. The structure is now being demolished to make way for a new, smaller power plant. The project was funded by Footprint Power.
This will be fourth year for the joint Montserrat-Endicott show at Rocky Neck, formerly held on a weekend at the Goetemann Residency Studio and now expanded to a four-week exhibition at the Cultural Center.
The exhibition will include a variety of media including painting, photography, book arts, sculpture, illustration, graphic design, and mixed media, and will be on both floors of the Rocky Neck Cultural Center.
Mark Towner, Dean for the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Endicott College states, ““There is a long history of exhibiting art by students alongside their professors’ art. The process reveals interesting patterns of media, style, and subject. The presentation of art created by individuals from different institutions, most often occurs in the form of an open competition.
“In the spirit of unity and celebration, this exhibition at Rocky Neck Cultural Center integrates both approaches. The end result provides multiple actions and dynamic reactions, to form a more complex picture: A synthesis most worthy of examination and the titling of this exhibit.”
Montserrat College of Art President Steve Immerman said he is “Montserrat values its collaboration with the creative community on Cape Ann, and especially the Rocky Neck Art Colony. We are so pleased to be able to showcase the work of our talented faculty and students with a larger audience.”

30th Annual Annisquam Arts & Crafts Show
Annisquam is always lovely, but especially nice to visit during the Annisquam Arts & Crafts Show, now in its 30th year of presenting unique, quality art and crafts by Cape Ann area artists. You definitely want to have this on your calendar for a great thing to do Columbus Day weekend.
The Annisquam Arts & Crafts Show this year celebrates it’s 30th anniversary with an exciting collection of work from 40 different artists.
The art encompasses landscapes, portraits and abstract water colors while crafts include jewelry, fashion, ceramics, paper art and printed fabrics. The majority of the artists – including many who are new to the show this year – are from the Cape Ann area. One of the highlights will be an original painting entitled My Gloucester Sunset 2 by the award-winning artist Dorothy Arnold. Generously donated by her family, it will be sold through a special raffle during the course of the show.
The show will be held in the Annisquam Village Hall, 36 Leonard Street, Annisquam on October 11 and 12 from 10:00am – 5:00pm. Admission is free. Proceeds from the show will benefit the Annisquam Village Church. For more information, please contact deborahbird1@gmail.com.

Sharon photographed the Furthur crew at breakfast. She and husband Chuck gave them their table for the bus crew. Ken Kesey’s son Zane sits center waving his hand. Sharon and Chuck leave tomorrow for home. I got to know what wonderful and generous people they are… and like me, they’re adventurous. Fair winds and smoothe seas, my friends forever.

September 20 BLOCK PARTY HarborWalk – Trails and Sails – Harbortown – Committee for the Arts

Thanks to Ringo, MBT Electricians, Parsons Street was ready and lit as darkness fell.
Downtown Block Party overlapped with the first weekend of Essex National Heritage annual Trails and Sails (Sept 19-21 and 26-28). James Owen Calderwood, the artist who created FISH NET, was here to experience both events, help set up and answer questions.
There were hours of great LIVE and local music by the stage in front of Bank Gloucester. I’ll add the entertainer names and sponsors for that stage into the comments below. Parents dining al fresco at Ohana watched their kids engage at the YMCA kid town area. 4Square dominates, effectively trapping all kids. The YMCA staff is excellent!
We enjoyed working with Don and Francis of FABOLA and the guys from Surfside Subs. Throughout the Block Party, happy customers lined up for Surfside Subs pizza (the biggest slices ever!) and it was non-stop at Markouk’s booth with City Hall rising beyond. (The next morning, Markouk would be up and at it again for Appleton Farms.)
FABOLA enlivened the sidewalk and parking space with mid-century modern “parklet” seating areas. A cozy chair and ottoman upholstered with a touch of Provence did not sell, but a trio of friends paused on FISH NET with their new modern lamp purchase.
I didn’t get to Smokin Jim’s Barbecue in the back garden by Dog Bar, nor Cape Ann Community Cinema to see Charade with Cary Grant, or the cheese tasting, or…well, there’s no way to get it all in. I did see the King, Fred Bodin! Congratulations to Judith Brackley, Valerie Markley, Lucinda, and others for their professionalism and attention to detail for these top notch street festivals.

Lamp Post Drunk
We’ve all been amused by the lawn ornament of the well dressed gentleman who had a little too much fun. Today, the humorous image is used to illustrate “the streetlight effect” in statistics and philosophy, a type of observational bias where people only look for whatever they are searching by looking where it is easiest.
The story goes: A policeman sees a drunk man searching for something under a streetlight and asks what the drunk has lost. He says he lost his keys and they both look under the streetlight together. After a few minutes the policeman asks if he is sure he lost them here, and the drunk replies, no, that he lost them in the park. The policeman asks why he is searching here, and the drunk replies, “this is where the light is.”

After years of planning and partnering, a new Essex National Heritage Area Visitor Information Desk has been added inside the already wonderful Salem National Park Service Visitor Center.
From the press release:
“The new partnership between Essex Heritage and the National Park Service will provide the Visitor Center’s 375,000 annual visitors with information about attractions, destinations, restaurants, resources and more in Salem and throughout Essex County.”
Katherine and Ryan will be managing this important hub. Prior to this post they worked for 6 years at the Visitor Center. Bonus: they live on the North Shore, and they both grew up on the North Shore. They are excited to join Essex National Heritage.

Another Great Block Party!
Our final Block Party of 2014 was a great success. As usual, the gallery was too busy for me to walk the street to take pictures. Rocky Neck Art Colony Appoints Executive Director
Rocky Neck Art Colony Appoints Executive Director
Suzanne Gilbert Lee has been appointed by the board of trustees to the newly created position of executive director of the Rocky Neck Art Colony (RNAC). Gilbert Lee, a native of Gloucester, comes to the art colony following a long history of arts administration, most recently as festivals coordinator for Historic New England headquartered in Boston. As former gallery director at North Shore Arts Association, Gilbert Lee is well suited to handle the growing management needs of the expanding RNAC, that until very recently operated solely as a volunteer-run organization. The acquisition of the Cultural Center building on Wonson Street has created the opportunity for a wide variety of events, programs and rentals in addition to exhibition space requiring hands-on management.
Gilbert Lee is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst with a BA in journalism and a graduate certificate in theology from Weston Jesuit School of Theology.
The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck is home office of the RNAC, the official Welcome Center for Gloucester’s Rocky Neck Cultural District and hosts exhibitions, workshops, meetings, lectures and cultural events of all kinds. The Cultural Center is open on Thursday-Sunday, 12:00-4:00 PM from September to May or by appointment. Please phone 978 515-7004.
The Center accommodates 60 to 100 people and is fully handicapped accessible. For information about renting the facility for a meeting, theatrical or musical performance, a small wedding or anniversary, both private or for the community, contact rnaccoordinator@gmail.com.
