Another decoration for my Christmas tree! It’s a fairly traditional model, made from six 3.25″ squares of paper, locked together without adhesive.
It is resting on my iPad, running Mandala HD, which makes a pretty cool background.

Fred wasn’t kidding when he said the stuffed clams at his gallery on Saturday were a hit. I was there early in the evening and had a couple of the clams (and ‘shrooms etc.) and I wish I could’ve made it back on Sunday for more! If I had known there would be leftovers, I would have eaten a few more on Saturday night…

They taste as good as they look. If you want to try some for yourself, here’s the full info:
There was a fairly steady flow of people through the gallery while I was there, increasing as the evening went on.
While the stuffed clams were a big part of the draw, it’s always great to hang out with Fred and friends and chat. I always meet interesting people at Fred’s events! And, of course, let’s not forget that he sells beautiful art. One of my favorite things is the pottery, which is spread throughout the gallery. This time, I bought a beautiful mug that was on sale, but I have bought a couple other pieces from him as well.
I could fill my cupboard with these things – I love the colors and textures, and the fact that they are made relatively nearby. Besides mugs, there are bowls, small pitchers, etc.
Stop in at Bodin Historic Photo during the upcoming events:
•December 6th, 38th annual Ladies Night. Party starting at 6 pm until whenever. Love it, a crazy night!
• December 13th, 38th annual Men’s Night. Rockin’ at 6 pm until 10. Guys get it done at this event.
• December 14th, 2nd annual GOOD MORNING GLOUCESTER HOLIDAY PARTY, 6 pm until late. Last year, we had so much food that we ran out of table space, but somehow managed. Restaurant owner Mark McDonough brought a plank (not a mere platter) of sushi from Latitude 43. And Joey’s Sista Felicia stepped up with dishes from her Italian kitchen, as she always does (yum). And Joey himself bought 20 Scalifani’s pizzas. Beer was donated by Sam Adams and spirits from Ryan & Woods Distillery. Mayor Kirk was here, as was a significant portion of the City Council. Over the top! Not to be missed!
• December 20th, 1st annual Family and Friends Night. Bring your “home for the holidays” guests in for gallery offerings, free deserts or appetizers at many restaurants, and Carolers strolling Main Street. My theory is that last minute shoppers will get their buying done before panic time. Also a great time to bring the kids.

Join nationally recognized teaching artist Lully Schwartz to try your hand painting master techniques. The experience and knowledge gained in creating small masterpieces will further the student’s ability to understand, control and create in oil paint and/or watercolor. Learning from the masters is an insightful method for advancing an artist’s talent.
A brief overview of European and American Masters will be followed by Lully’s demonstration on material use, under-painting and glazing. The atmosphere in which you will develop your work will correspond to the master’s studio experience for working in miniature. A special materials list will be provided and additional tools made available by Lully for use in the workshop. Note: Each artist will be given source material for the first painting and encouraged to paint an original miniature work of art for the second. To receive the optimal experience in this class artists sign up for both days.
Contact Lully Schwartz at info@lullyschwartz.com for more information or to sign up for this workshop. Note: workshop size is limited for the optimal learning experience. Four openings left and registration is taking place now.

Stuffed Clams that we served tonight at my gallery, made by Kat, a passionate professional. Gotta do it.
We had a great opening last night with Kat’s stuffed clams, Ginny and Nannette’s stuffed mushrooms, and Debbie Demarkis’s meat, cheese, and marinated sun-dried tomato platters, And wonderful Joy, our Angel Reader. Although we had 50+ people here, Kat’s clams, which were a huge hit, were not completely consumed, because she brought so many. Tonight I gave three of them to Steve, (one of the owners of Jalapeños). So I’m opening up the gallery for stuffed clams, and other leftovers for a mug up tomorrow at morning 10:30 am. I also have Belgian Ring Rasperry pastry to put out. Low key:, so eat, drink, and relax before the Santa Parade. BYO coffee. I’ve got soda, cider, beer and wine. All FOB’s and FOG’s (friends of the GMG Blog and Friends of the Gallery) are welcome, plus everyone else, to come in to eat, drink, and hang out. Fred

Two perspectives on an origami turkey, which I folded following the instructions in “Genuine Origami” by Jun Maekawa. The background is a painting by local artist Kathleen Miller.
I decided to try out this new fad of engineering prints for myself. A lot of design and craft blogs have been featuring these prints lately and raving about them. It’s an inexpensive way to get large scale photos made. Engineering prints are usually just used for building plans and such. I tested one out with one of my photos from Lighthouse beach.
I have been thinking of using this as an idea for my friend’s upcoming shower as inexpensive decorations, but I wanted to test it out first. I ordered a 24″ x 36″ from Staples and picked it up in store. It cost me a total of $3.19. The quality isn’t perfect but the contrast and impact is excellent. It’s very lightweight paper so it can crinkle easily and really made for one time use, unless you mount it to foam board or plywood.
I have heard rumors, that printers don’t really like doing photos as engineering prints because it’s uses more ink and wears out the printers. I didn’t seem to have a problem, but I’m sure as this gets more popular some places may crack down and not do photos.
I plan on ordering more and mounting them to foam board to hang from the ceiling for party decorations. They would make great inexpensive decor for theme parties, weddings, or as dorm room posters.

One uncut sheet of paper each. The reindeer is folded from a design by Peter Engel, and the Santa is designed by Steven Casey. I folded them to be among the items raffled and sold at the Holy Family Parish Christmas Fair, to be held this Saturday, Nov. 17, 9am-2pm.
Here’s a closeup of some of the reindeer:
They took me about an hour each to fold.

Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr, State Representative Ann-Margaret Ferrante and the Gloucester Veteran Services Office cordially invite you to a dedication ceremony on Saturday, November 17th of the Cape Ann portion of Rt.128 that has legislatively been designated a Purple Heart Highway. Saturday’s dedication will begin at 11:00AM and will be held at Gloucester City Hall, followed by a small reception at the Gloucester House Restaurant at 12:30PM. Invited guests include local officials, Purple Heart recipients and other members of the veterans’ community. During the ceremony the new signs designating the highway will be unveiled.
When: Saturday, November 17th
Time: 11:00AM Where: Gloucester City Hall
Earlier this year, Senator Tarr filed legislation designating the portion of Rt.128 as a Purple Heart Highway as a result of a home rule petition passed by the Gloucester City Council and approved by Mayor Carolyn Kirk. The legislation, which was co-sponsored by Representative Ferrante, was signed into law by Governor Patrick on August 16th.
The Cape Ann section of Rt.128, which begins at Grant Circle and extends to East Main Street, now joins with transportation elements in 45 states across the country that collectively comprise the National Purple Heart Trail System. The name of the system stems from the Purple Heart Medal that honors members of the United States military who were wounded or killed in service to the nation.
Designating the Cape Ann portion of Rt.128 further honors these veterans for the sacrifices they have made on behalf of this great nation.
Saturday’s event is open to the public, and you may share this information with others, and we hope to see you there!
Last Sunday, I stopped by the Gauthier Gallery grand opening on Main Street.
I had visited (and posted about) the Gauthier Gallery before, so it was nice to see how things have been coming together. Most of the artists involved were there:
There is a great selection of art there right now! Here are some sample shots:

It’s not just paintings; there are elaborately decorated boxes…
Painted wooden trunks…

… and colorful scarfs:
Elizabeth Gauthier has started a new activity at her gallery: painting parties! From her website:
The-Painting-Party offers an upbeat evening of painting and socializing for both the artistic and the not so artistically inclined. You will be guided through step by step instructions by an accomplished art instructor. It’s fun and totally stress free.
And by the end of the night you will be amazed at the work of art that YOU created. You will go home with a painting that is uniquely yours – and perhaps a new found talent you’ll want to nurture!
She has a schedule on her website.
Hopefully, this series of posts has stirred up some interest in origami in at least a few people. So, where can one find origami here on Cape Ann?
For books and paper, the only place I have found on this side of the bridge is Island Art and Hobby on Main Street in Gloucester. They have a selection of basic kits as well as separate books and paper. They told me that they will be expanding the selection slightly in the coming days, and I bet they could order more if you need something they don’t have in stock.
Of course, A.C. Moore and Michael’s at the Liberty Tree Mall also have paper, but it’s nice to buy locally and support our Main Street economy.
You can also buy completed origami art without crossing the Annisquam River. Staying on Main Street, at the The Dress Code consignment shop you can find a selection of origami jewelry:
It is not on display, so if you are interested you have to ask at the counter. Some of it was made by Mark Kennedy, whom I know from the annual origami conventions in New York. He lacquers his work so that it has long-term durability despite the fragility of paper, and he glues pins or clips on the back to turn the origami models into jewelry.
There is also the Four Winds gallery on Tuna Wharf on Bearskin Neck in Rockport. It is a family gallery, including photography, pottery, origami, and more, mostly (or all) by members of the Carbone family. The origami there includes stand-along models of varied topics (including fish, of course) and colorful mobiles.
Lastly, I hope to be selling some origami Christmas ornaments in this year’s Christmas Bazaar at St. Ann’s Church (a fundraiser for St. Ann’s Parish) later this month (I think it’s Nov. 17th; I’ll post full info later).
If you are interested in classes, I don’t think there is anything available on a regular basis, but as I have mentioned, I hope to give a Christmas origami class and maybe offer more workshops from time to time.
Did I miss anything? Do you know of any stores on Cape Ann that sell origami books or paper, or finished origami art? Please share by posting a comment!
