Pumpkin Challenge Benefits Open Door

pumpkinchallengebanner

On Tuesday, October 29th, Alchemy’s Chef [and defending throw down champion] Scott Jensen will challenge Chef Stacy Cogswell of Regal Beagle to a throw down with the season’s #1 staple: the pumpkin.

While the chefs battle it out in the kitchen to see who can make pumpkin taste the best, there will also be a contest to see who can make it look the best. The restaurants are inviting artists and non-artists alike to enter their carved pumpkins in a contest, and for each pumpkin entered Alchemy will donate $5 to the Open Door.

At the challenge, every guest will receive a signature challenge cocktail made with Gloucester’s own Ryan & Wood spirits, a pumpkin dish from each chef, and the opportunity to cast their vote for the winner of both contests.

Contestants in the pumpkin carving challenge do not need to be present at the event itself to win, they simply need to bring their carved pumpkin to Alchemy anytime between now and 7:00 pm on October 29th. The best looking pumpkin will earn its maker a $100 gift certificate with second place receiving $50.

The last chef challenge sold out, so call to reserve your spot now 978.281.3997.

What do you get when you mix Mardi Gras & Halloween?

Henri Smith @ The Larcom Theatre in Beverly for a sold-out Mardi Gras Concert in April 2013 – photo: Thom Falzarano

Mardi-Gras-O-Ween with Henri Smith New Orleans Friends & Flavours at Cape Ann Brewery on Halloween night — that’s exactly 2 weeks from tonight (Thursday) at 8pm.

This will be fun blending of two great traditions.  A good time is guaranteed for all. Costumes are more than welcome.

Plus it’s a great way to get you psyched for Henri’s special Christmas concert at the fully restored, historic Larcom Theatre in Beverly on December 14.  Now, remember, as Fly Amero said (in this post) Beverly is NOT “up the line” it’s “virtually next-door … right down the street from us”.  Best of all, the Larcom is a gorgeous theatre with perfect sound.  The best seats are going fast, so get tickets here.

Who is Malachy McCourt? Listen here and find out!

Malachy McCourt

Perhaps you’ve heard of his brother, Frank McCourt, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of best-sellers Angela’s Ashes,  ‘Tis and Teacher Man.  If you’ve read any of Frank McCourt’s books, you’ll feel like you know Malachy, who is one of the central characters — especially in Angela’s Ashes, which has been described as a tragicomic memoir of the misery and squalor of their childhood.  Here’s an excerpt from the beginning of Angela’s Ashes that will give an idea of the Brothers McCourt’s charm, wit and brutal honesty.

“When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I survived at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood.”

After emigrating to the U.S., Frank & Malachy wrote the play, A Couple of Blaguards, which opens this Friday at the Larcom Theatre in Beverly (get tickets here).

On Sunday, North Shore 104.9’s Aurelia Nelson interviewed Malachy on her show Curtain Up.  It’s loads of fun.  Listen here:

Another Discount FOB’s hear about FIRST!

Slide_SmallPosterYou’ve just got to hear these guys to believe it!  The Slide Brothers’ only New England performance this year is Saturday, November 2 at Beverly’s Larcom Theatre, that Fly Amero describes as “a fully restored, gorgeous facility with hand-painted tin, beautifully designed curtains, world-class stage lighting and, well… the list could go on and on … The sound (under the direction of Will Hunt) was nothing shy of spectacular…” (see full post).

Best of all, it’s right next door — about 20 minutes away — in downtown Beverly.  And you can now get Premium Seats to the next 2 concerts for less than the cost of Standard Seats if you click on this link now.  Premium seats sell out first, so we’re telling you before we tell the rest of the world.  You know you want tickets to both concerts, so get them now!

VIDEO: Schooner Adventure Sails Again

Cape Ann TV’s Lisa Smith sent this video by Josef Hnulik, filmed aboard Schooner Adventure during this year’s Schooner Festival  featuring Daisy Nell & Captain Stan on the soundtrack.

Come aboard the Schooner Adventure for a sail in Gloucester Schooner Festival’s Mayor’s Race. It is the Adventure’s first race after she underwent a restoration project lasting two decades. The crew is proud of this historic fishing vessel, as they are the ones who restored her to her former grandeur.

Local rising star, Michael Thomas Doyle opens for The Slide Brothers Nov 2 in Beverly

Local singer/songwriter Michael Thomas Doyle will open for legendary pedal steel masters, The Slide Brothers on Saturday, November 2 at Beverly’s fully restored, historic Larcom Theatre.

Mike Doyle has been compared to John Mayer, with the Noise Magazine proclaiming his “talent by the boatload,” and likening his live guitar skills to those of Keith Richards.  Mike is one of those young musicians you want to watch over the next few years.  See a short bio of Michael Thomas Doyle here and  get tickets here.  It won’t be long before you’ll have to pay over a hundred bucks for a crappy seat in a huge venue far away with expensive parking if you want to see him.  Check out the video to see what we mean:

Robert Randolph Presents … The Slide Brothers — ONLY New England Appearance on November 2nd at Larcom Theatre.
The Slide Brothers … tackle rock, funk and blues with a ferocity that will startle fans of Duane Allman, Derek Trucks and Muddy Waters.” —Guitar World

Big live music weekend coming up ~ so much to do ~ how do you choose?

TOMORROW (Saturday)

Depending on the weather, this might be your last chance to catch a music sail on the Thomas E. Lannon this year.  Michael O’Leary performs with his band.

Once again, we recommend that you CLICK HERE to get your tickets today if you want to be assured of a seat.

SUNDAY

Marina Evans UNBOUND CD Release concert at Cape Ann Community Cinema looks like it will be an excellent evening.

“The Dublin Guitar Quartet have no frontiers when it comes to blazing a trail for contemporary music.”— Sunday Business Post (Ireland)

Described as a “quartet with a difference” by the Irish Times, the Dublin Guitar Quartet is a one-of-a-kind classical guitar ensemble that occupies a unique space in the wider chamber music world. It is the first classical guitar quartet devoted to new music. Since its formation at the Dublin Conservatory of Music and Drama, DGQ has worked to expand the limited repertoire by commissioning new works and adapting modern masterpieces from outside of the guitar repertoire. Audiences can expect an explosive, entertaining, and completely novel concert experience.

PETER WOLF unplugged at Shalin Liu – November 29th – Don’t Wait to Get your tickets

PETER WOLF unplugged
Get Tickets NOW

Bluesy Rock ‘n’ Roller Peter Wolf is best known for his stretch as the front man with the J. Geils Blues Band, where he was known for his stage antics and quick wit. After seeing the J. Geils Band in concert for the first time, Wolf immediately joined the band where he became not only the leader of the group, but also handled much of the group’s business affairs. The band soon became well known for their vivacious and exciting live performances. After gaining recognition in New England, they caught the attention of Bill Graham, a well-known promoter who continued to book them, helping them gain fans in every city they visited.

After the band parted ways in 1983 due to creative differences, Wolf took on a solo career releasing seven solo albums and collaborating with countless musicians such as Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. His sixth solo album Sleepless was listed as one of the 500 “Greatest Albums of All Time” by Rolling Stonemagazine in 2002, and his most recent release, 2010’s Midnight Souvenirs, won best album at the Boston Music Awards Some of his best solo hits include “Come as You Are”, “Lights Out”, “99 Worlds” and “Nothing But the Wheel”.

Wolf will be joining us at the Shalin Liu Performance Center with a special acoustic show to share some of his new music, old favorites, and that hugely charismatic stage presence for which he is so well known.

Joan Osborne at Shalin Liu on Friday October 11- Only a Few Seats Left

JOAN OSBORNE
Get Tickets

Armed with her strong, sultry voice, Joan Osborne’s genre-crossing prowess has garnered accolades as a singer-songwriter, pop hitmaker, and rootsy, bluesy soul singer for almost two decades. Since the
release of her 1995 breakout album Relish and her hit song “One of Us” that catapulted her into super stardom status with seven Grammy nominations, Osborne has waded deeper into the world of blues and R&B, from which her love of singing began. In 2002 she cemented her reputation as a top tier soul singer with the acclaimed documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown and a tour with legendary Motown band The Funk Brothers. Earning a 2013 Grammy nomination, her latest album Bring It on Home is her first album composed entirely of covers in that genre, featuring songs by Muddy Waters, Ray Charles, Nina Simone, Otis Redding, and more ranging from Slim Harpo’s “Shake Your Hips” to the Bill Withers deep cut “Same Love That Made Me Laugh.”

Breaking News: Beer & Wine available at Saturday’s Larcom Theatre Concert

Yesterday Rich Marino, owner of Chianti’s Tuscan Restaurant and Jazz Lounge in Beverly, was granted a one-day license to serve beer and wine at our concert featuring the Allen Estes Band at the Larcom Theatre in Beverly.

In case you don’t know Chianti’s, it’s one of those restaurants worth going over the bridge for.  The food is excellent with professional — but not stuffy — service.  Best of all, Chianti’s is listed as one of the “Top 150 Jazz Rooms in the World” by Downbeat magazine.  An accomplished musician himself, Rich knows how to treat his music-loving customers.

Chianti’s will be offering the perfect beers and wines to complement Saturday’s music — and you can even take the drinks back to your seat, so you don’t miss a beat of this extraordinary show.

You can still get good seats by clicking here.  The Box Office at Larcom Theatre will open on Saturday around 2pm.  We hope to see you at the show!
