North Shore Art*Throb celebrates one full year in print! On Tuesday, May 1, we will unveil the first issue of Volume II and celebrate being the North Shore’s new magazine, dedicated to arts, culture and community.
North Shore Art*Throb has been online since spring 2009 and in print since April 2011. We employ diverse platforms, from traditional print to cutting-edge digital, in an effort to incubate a regional movement of sustainable communities invested in the arts, a local economy and cultural engagement. Since our first copy hit the streets last April, we have experienced growth of 400 percent. The magazine is printed 10 times a year at the century-old and family-run Deschamps Printing Company in Salem and is available at area businesses and in distribution boxes in Salem, Beverly, Marblehead and Lynn. Our first 10 issues of rich, four-color pages featured the work of local artists, North Shore happenings, our monthly Hot List and the smart writing of our contributors.
The May issue features artists, fashion and food, while exploring the spring ritual of Transformation. The issue also features interviews with the founders of Art*Throb and Beverly-based Studios at Porter Mill, as each celebrates a one-year milestone.
Also launching this May is the long-awaited re-design of Art*Throb’s web presence, an undertaking by Salem-based designer Rob Gifford and Gloucester-based Ben MacAdam. The fresh site will continue to feature our curated Monday Hot List of events for the week, the North Shore’s most comprehensive arts calendar, outtakes from the print magazine and exclusive web features.
Join us Tuesday, May 1 for a celebration of spring, art, success and Transformation. Studios at Porter Mill is celebrating one year since taking over the space formerly known as Red Brick studios and creating gallery space, studios and a waiting list for space. Their call for artists on the theme of our May issue, Transformation, has produced a thought-provoking show that will run through the month of May. The show has been juried by Susan Halter,  executive director of Lynn Arts, and has resulted in our May cover by Lynn-based artist Erin McCarthy.
The photograph Last Night at West 49th Street, New York, New York is from the series if we’re being honest/yes, let’s be honest, a body of work spanning a year and six countries. The series serves as a visual diary and seeks to understand what a person leaves behind in places and people they encounter, and the lasting (and sometimes life altering) effects that simple moments can create.
The May 1 reception is 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and features nibbles by Chive Sustainable Event Design & Catering of Beverly and the Latin beat of Patino Vazquez of Los Sugar Kings.
Our monthly parties move around the North Shore, shine a light on local musicians and restaurants and bring together artists, educators, business owners, community activists and our contributors, subjects and readers.

Tickets for the Regis College World Premier of SIX PAIRS OF HANDS: A musical about the Fisherman’s Wives Association of Gloucester are selling like hotcakes! I have personally seen this show, and was so very impressed (and you know I have high standards!). I know that many locals will be moved and honored by this tribute. Not to be missed!

NORTH SHORE ARTS ASSOCIATION FEATURES 90TH SEASON’S FIRST “SMALL WORKS” EXHIBIT

The North Shore Arts Association presents a solo exhibition of small works by plein air painter Steven Kennedy from May 5th through May 24th.  The public is welcome to join the artist in an opening reception on Sun., May 6th from 1- 4 pm.
Since the early 1980’s Steve Kennedy has been working in the plein air tradition, painting directly from life outdoors in the many variations of weather and season.  He calls his style “painterly realism” because he paints in a loose yet representational style.  Maritime and architectural themes figure prominently throughout his work, and he’s especially interested in the play of light and shadow upon his chosen subjects.
Kennedy’s work is in many public and private collections, including the permanent collection of the Cape Cod Museum (Dennis, MA), the Cahoon Museum of Art (Falmouth, MA), as well as several others in the Northeast.  He has won various awards at art associations in the New England-New York area.  He has taught painting in Provincetown for many years and will be teaching a workshop this season at NSAA June 13th-14th titled “An Eye to Architecture, Painting on the Streets of Gloucester”. North Shore Arts Association has a thriving artist membership of over 350 contemporary artists recognized nationally and worldwide. They come not only from Cape Ann, but throughout North America.
NSAA’s historic old building, located at 11 Pirates Lane in East Gloucester, provides the opportunity to view one of the largest collections of paintings and sculpture on Cape Ann.

May is Better Speech & Hearing Month

Free Speech-Language Screenings at Addison Gilbert and Beverly hospitals

The Speech-Language Therapy Department at Beverly Hospital will  sponsor free pediatric speech/language screenings at Beverly and  Addison Gilbert hospitals from May 1 – May 31 for children 11 months – 18 years  Screeings will be conducted by a member of the Speech-Language

Therapy Department which will take approximately 20-30 minutes  to identify if a child is developmentally appropriate in terms of  their speech, language, or feeding skills. If a child qualifies for  further evaluation, a speech/language pathologist will assist  you in scheduling a comprehensive speech/language evaluation.

Screenings will take place in Speech-language Therapy Outpatient  Clinic at Beverly Hospital , directly on Herrick Street in Beverly , MA  and Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine at  Addison Gilbert Hospital, 298 Washington Street, Gloucester.

ROCKPORT CULTURAL DISTRICT

KICK-OFF PARTY

Tuesday, April 24, 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM

Brackett’s Oceanview Restaurant, 25 Main Street, Rockport, MA

The newly designated Rockport Cultural District will host a kick-off party for new and prospective members on Tuesday, April 24, 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM, at Brackett’s Oceanview Restaurant, 25 Main Street in Rockport, Massachusetts.

The host committee invites all organizations and businesses within the borders of the District to learn more about the organization’s plans, including goals for attracting more visitors to the Town of Rockport. Speakers include Merri Jenkins from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Light refreshments and appetizers will be served, courtesy of Brackett’s Oceanview Restaurant. There is a cash bar.

Membership in the Rockport Cultural District is free of charge. The District is comprised of Bearskin Neck, Main Street, and sections of School, Broadway and Pleasant Streets. A map may be viewed on the Rockport Cultural District’s page on Facebook.
