Lannon Ryan and Wood Rum and Old Cuban Cigar Factory Cigar Cruise

My buddy James Eves from Cape Ann Giclee writes in-

Hey Joey,

I can’t thank you enough for spearheading the 2013 Rum and Cigar Cruise on the Lannon. I saw the post on GMG about 6 weeks ago and thought that I should buy a ticket. I yelled from my desk to Anna, “Hey, I think I’ll buy a ticket to the Rum and Cigar Cruise”. She agreed. (lucky for me, my wife, partner and muse encourages me to take time to enjoy the benefits of living in heaven). So, I bought a ticket.

I tried to get some work done today, but really spent most of my time in anticipation of the cruise. I stopped pretending to work at about 4:30 and headed down to the dock at five. I was first on line for the 6:00 cruise and watched the unloading of passengers from the previous sail. I met Mimi, An older woman (she told me her age but made me promise not to reveal her secret). She is from Haverhill, but the highlight of her year, every year, is spending a few weeks in Gloucester. We do live in the best place on earth.

Mimi left and I watched the Lannon crew prep the ship for the next cruise.

After a reasonably short wait they started loading the ship. I walked down the ramp and onto the deck. I was there greeted by a young woman from Old Cuban Cigar Company who handed me two fine cigars. I lit my first one immediately. Once we were all aboard the Captain spoke of safety and what to expect on the cruise around Gloucester harbor. He then introduced the Old Cuban Cigar guy who told us just how fine the cigars we were smoking were. He, in turn, introduced us to Bob Ryan of Ryan & Wood Distillery. Bob and his wife proceeded to dole out rum the likes of which few get to enjoy.

With the strong smoke and smooth drink my work life faded to a blurry haze. Then I was able to truly appreciate where I was and see the beauty of Gloucester Harbor.

It was a beautiful night with a strong wind. The crowd on the boat were all GMG FOBs so I felt right at home. I was, however a bit disappointed that Joey C wasn’t there. Then I heard some cheers from the back of the boat and then saw Joey arriving in a small inflatable to starboard. “well”, I thought, “the party now begins”. and so it did.

I must say, how grateful I am to you, Joey, for your enthusiasm and the role model you are for those of us in Gloucester who truly strive to grow our community through our business and our lives. I was quite a treat to watch from the bow as you circled the boat and brought the party to life.

It was indeed a beautiful cruise. It felt timeless.

Once docked there was talk of an after party at Stones. I’d never been. ( I know it odd but I am fairly new to Gloucester.) The party continued there and I could see that the cruise had washed away the hard days work for more that just me.

Wow, What a perfect night, only in Gloucester!!

3rd ANNUAL GLOUCESTER OVERDOSE VIGIL

August 29, 2013

Remembering those lost to Drug Overdose

On August 29, 2013 the Gloucester Overdose Vigil Committee would like to invite all community members who have lost a loved one to overdose. We are a committee made up of concerned community members from Gloucester and Cape Ann.

Dedication of luminaries, speakers, music and the reading of names will be part of this special evening.

Losing a loved one to an overdose is a lonely experience. In a healing spirit and tradition set by other communities join us in coming together to remember those we have lost to overdose and shed light on this ongoing tragedy.

If you are a neighbor, friend, family of someone taken by an overdose or have been touched in any way by a drug overdose please join us for a remembrance and vigil. We will be gathering on Stacy Boulevard at the flag pole near the Cut Bridge, overlooking Gloucester Harbor from 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. rain or shine

Two people die from an overdose every day in Massachusetts and from 2002-2008 we have lost 3,859 residents in our state. In Gloucester the rate of overdose is 2.2 times higher than the state rate.

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services there were 38,329 reported fatal overdoses in the United States.

Who Is The Fruit Cup Ninja?

Bill Cox writes-

For the life of me, I can’t figure this out. When Melissa and I cleaned this area out a few weeks ago, we must have found a dozen or so fruit cups. Today I find another….I am vexed! Do we have a fruit cup ninja running around? Was there a fruit cup truck accident I was unaware of? Pagan ritual item?

CAPE ANN CHAMBER’S CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER RESIGNS

CAPE ANN CHAMBER’S CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER RESIGNS

Today, the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce announced that Robert W. Heidt, Jr., the Chamber’s Chief Executive Officer, has announced his resignation to accept another leadership position in the Chamber industry. Heidt’s departure comes after nearly two years of distinguished service in which he advanced many of the organization’s goals and helped strengthen the Cape Ann business community.

"Robert has been an invaluable, motivated leader for our organization and Cape Ann. His ability to advocate for business, build partnerships and drive the organization forward serves as a model for those who follow. While we are sorry to see him go, we are so very fortunate to have benefited from Robert’s leadership. The Chamber will build upon the progress under Robert’s tenure while continuing in its mission to advance the region’s business interests," said Ed Collard, 2013 Board President.

During his tenure, Heidt is credited with dramatically enhancing the financial stability, bolstering internal & external communications strategies, building a dynamic team of professionals and adding additional levels of transparency to the growing organization. "It has been a privilege working shoulder to shoulder with so many dedicated professionals who care deeply about the vitality of Cape Ann. In today’s very competitive, global environment, it is critical that America’s Chambers strive for world-class commitment and meaningful results – together, we have done that. I give much credit to my team, members and partners I’ve had the honor of working with and look forward to their continued progress.” said Robert Heidt.

Heidt will leave his post on October 1st. Peter Webber, will oversee Chamber operations until a new Chief Executive Officer is hired, appointed by Ed Collard, 2013 Board President. Ed Collard will be leading the Search Committee for the organization’s next Chief Executive Officer.

Magnolia Road Race

Hi Joe,

Thanks again for all of your help on the race this year.  GMG has a prime position on our shirts and we are putting up a banner on the side of the Library for race day and a few weeks after to thank all of our sponsors.

Thanks in part to your video, we have sold out all of our free t-shirts for the first 100 pre registrants early this year.  There will not likely be any available race day.  However, we have decided to make more available to the first 10 people who show up to register in person on Friday night, between 7-8PM at the Library.  We all agree these are the best shirts we have done yet.  I will bring yours by soon.  We are also keeping the low $20 entry fee for anyone who shows up Friday, which will save you $5.

So…on top of the kid’s fun run, the 5K main event, pancake breakfast, bouncy house, fire engine display, and crafts fair…. The Library is also setting up a hot dog stand at the Magnolia Pier around 11AM.  That’s right! Hot Dogs and Pier Jumping.  The weather is going to be perfect.  Does it get any better than that?

Best,

Randy

Spread the Word! PANCAKE BREAKFAST The Library is opening the gates starting at 8:45am; right after the fun run on Saturday August 24. Yet another reason to run watch or volunteer. $5 for adults and $2 for kids.

This certified 5k course is lined with spectators, loops around the shore, and is chock full of gorgeous ocean views (and breezes!) Historically 200-400 runners participate and 50 volunteers run the show. Post-race celebrations include an awards ceremony, refreshments, and this year the Magnolia Library Center’s 125th anniversary celebration. ALL proceeds benefit the Magnolia Library Center, a non-profit community organization dedicated to enriching the lives of our residents by providing educational and cultural experiences through programming and events.

Gloucester’s First Bike Lanes

Fred Bodin Submits-

I first noticed the Bike Lane on Rogers Street while driving home Saturday night after the Block Party. Today, I saw it again on Stacy Boulevard while leaving the Waterfront Festival. It runs the entire length of the Boulevard, but not on all of Rogers Street. I’m not used to dealing with innovation, except for a few trips thru Boston. I automatically drove my car in between the center line and the Bike Lane line. I think it’s a great idea.

Tuffy’s Daughter Degelis From Lobster Girl To COO. Is there Anything She Can’t Do?

Playing with lobsters

Degelis Tufts took a break from the hustle and bustle of New York City this August to roll up her sleeves and get busy banding on a father-daughter lobstering trip aboard the Degelyse. This is nothing new to Degelis, as she’s been playing with lobsters since she was a baby and has been helping dad on the boat since age 6.

Degelis is now the COO of TopShelf Clothes, a (free!) online personal shopper for women. TopShelf has a team of personal stylists finding the items you need from across the top online retailers, lets you vote on their suggestions with a click of a button, and automatically creates an online closet for you based on past purchases. Hail to the Chief!

Fred Bodin Submits-

Chief Samuel George, of the Bear Clan of the Cayuga Nation, represents with his wife Debbie. They live in Cuba, NY, and will be vacationing here on Cape Ann next summer. I guess this is the first Chief and head of state to visit my gallery. Perhaps he’s also the first American Indian Chief to own the sticka.  All Hail to the Chief!

image

In talking to the Chief, I could tell that this was a wise and gracious man. He wanted to know about Dogtown’s history and of local native Americans. I told him what I learned from Elyssa East’s book, www.dogtownthebook.com/elyssaeast, and how the Dogtown residents left because of raids during the French and Indian War. Then I explained how Dogtown is now: Big, wildly overgrown with few marked trails thru the jungle, and is very easy to get lost in. Chief Samuel George softly remarked: “That’s good.” Makes you think…

15 Years Of Gloucester Cyclocross

image

In early May, the chances of our event taking place in Gloucester were close to zero. All efforts ceased and we focused 100% on two other venues.

What a turnaround in the past month. We have received the support of the Mayor, the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, the Open Space & Recreation Committee, racers, teams, and Gloucester citizens.  Despite a delayed start to the permit process, we submitted our applications and have received the approval of the Planning & Development Committee (P&D).  We now have one final obstacle.

On Tuesday, August 27th, we’ll attend a public hearing in front of the full City Council. While I’m extremely hopeful, this is where we could really use the help of the community. If you support the Gran Prix of Gloucester, please consider showing your support at this public hearing.

A few weeks ago, over 75 supporters came to Stage Fort Park for the P&D site visit in a non-participatory role. Next week, the public WILL have the opportunity to speak and we hope to hear from you.

We humbly ask, if you support GP Gloucester, please come to Gloucester City Hall on Tuesday the 27th and voice your support.

On The Rails at Maritime Gloucester

Bill O’Connor Submits-

Hi Joey,

On our last visit to Maritime Gloucester, there was lots of activity going on. The Building Center had a crew installing a new specimen on cabinet in the lab building (made of recycled pieces fromtheir old kitchen display), and Jay McLauchlin was rounding the edges of the new handrails on the wharf with a router.  The whole place is going to look awesome for the Schooner Festival this year!

Enjoy!
