New Maritime Science Center at Maritime Gloucester!
Opening Spring 2021

Maritime Gloucester is thrilled to announce our plans for a brand new Maritime Science Center!

Before COVID upended our lives, Maritime Gloucester’s marine science field trips, public pop-up programs, and Sea Pocket Aquarium were a favorite educational experiences. Demand for our hands-on educational experiences and programs exceeded our space limitations. But the seasonal nature of our Sea Pocket Aquarium limited our most popular educational feature, direct interaction with marine life, to the summer months when schools were not in session. To better realize our mission and our potential, we sought to address these limitations. The past several months, during our temporary COVID-19 closure, we created a renovation plan to vastly improve our physical space.

Over this winter and early Spring, Maritime Gloucester will redesign our lower level alongside our historic working waterfront. The current wet lab, office space, and an underutilized exhibit area will be transformed into a new public exhibit, presentation, and instructional space. These newly renovated areas will connect to our existing classroom and digital microscope lab to create a year-round, indoor Maritime Science Center complete with touch tanks, interactive exhibits, research, and teaching opportunities. This Maritime Science Center will allow us to host more field trips, provide additional program opportunities, and bring our visitors and members the benefits of our Sea Pocket Aquarium in a year-round facility!

We are able to kick off this campaign thanks to a generous grant from the Cummings Foundation. Maritime Gloucester was fortunate to receive the Cummings Foundation’s $100k for 100 award this year. This major grant will be distributed to us over the next three years, with this first year’s funds going toward the new center’s construction costs, and the following years going to running programs and operating the space. An additional grant from Applied Materials was recently awarded for the creation of educational content in the Center. Since then, we have received generous in-kind and cash donations that have put us within striking distance of our fundraising goals!

TODAY WE NEED YOUR HELP TO REACH OUR GOAL!We still have $15,000 to raise to finalize Phase 1 of this plan.

Please consider giving to Maritime Gloucester today.
