Birds of Parker River
For the sake of the blog, we made a trip out to Parker River recently and suffered the bites of the greenheads so you readers don’t have to…….the birds were pretty accommodating considering the pesky flies. If you are a cedar waxwing fan, you might want to consider a trip as they are very plentiful right now sitting prettily in the trees and bushes. We saw my personal favorite killdeer; heron, egret, osprey and others.

The motions and rituals of daily activities all serve as prompts allowing Barker to incorporate walking, journey-taking, solitary contemplative actions — into forms of drawing, sewing, knitting, wrapping, paper manipulation and performance.
In 2018 a sculptural piece was chosen for exhibition at the 250th celebration The Great Spectacle: Summer Exhibition at The Royal Academy of Arts, London UK curated by British National Treasure, Grayson Perry.

The Bauhaus Inspired series began shortly after Barker moved to the West Country. Unable to work on large pieces, she began visiting antique/junk shops where a treasure trove of French silks was discovered. Convinced at the time these were ‘paintings’ despite the fact that she was knitting them into squares, they were put aside until January of this year. With the addition of colors along the bottom of each piece they did become, in her mind, paintings.
Gail Barker grew up under the wide skies and on the flat landscape of East Anglia in Great Britain. She attended a Quaker primary school and later a farm school — all of which influenced her love of space and a reverence for the simple rhythms of daily life. In 1977 she moved to Rochester, NY and then In 1989 to New England (Beverly Farms MA) where she graduated from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston She has exhibited at The Royal Academy of Arts, London UK; and performed with the collaborative Fourthland (https://www.fourthland.com) at The Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol UK and Bath UK. Her work is held in numerous private collections in the US and UK. Barker returned to her native England in 2008. She resides in Bath where she maintains her studio. I may or may not have a cooler and ice obsession. Here’s a test video
Is it strange that I have a ton of anxiety based around if my beverages and food is kept optimally cold?
Like I am seriously freaking out if we go to the beach and my beer isn’t ice cold, I’m angry. I’m angry if other people aren’t doing whatever it takes to insure the beer and bottled water are super cold.
Is it strange that I feel the need to have several different types of coolers for different situations?
1)Large cooler for party situations at the house
Pros:
Large Capacity
Classy All White
Inexpensive
Cons:
Mobility/Super heavy when loaded/no wheels
Igloo 100 Quart Link To Purchase Here
2) Need a wheeled cooler for family outings where there will be a lot of food and beverages and ice and to carry it along with all the other beach stuff is not optimal without wheels.
Pros:
- Decent capacity
- Wheels and telescopic handle
- Price
Cons:
- Overkill for more than a couple of people
Coleman 50 Quart link To Purchase Here

3) Need a rotomolded one for when you want to insure the coldest of cold beverages and you’re not having to lug it a long way.
Ozark Trail Rotomolded 26 Qt Link To Purchase
Pros:
- Rotomolded coolers best for keeping beverages cold the longest.
- Quality Construction/Materials
Cons:
- Super heavy even without ice and cans.
- Price
- Low capacity for size and weight
4) Need a slim soft sided one that won’t take up a lot of room on the boat.
Ozark Trail Soft Sided Welded Seam Cooler Link To Purchase

Pros:
Vertical Footprint takes up less space on the boat
Waterproof and leakproof
Price
Cons:
Stiff zippers that need lubricating to keep moving easily
Eric Lorden owns this one and we did an ice test to see how it fared.
Disclaimer: Many hard core cooler freaks (like myself) will want to consider the conditions under which the test was administered.
I’ll outline what the conditions were for the test:
The cooler was not pre-chilled and the 18 pack of Coors light was dumped in the cooler from the package store cooler ten minutes after it was purchased so the beer was cold. The ice in the two 5 lb bags we dumped in had melted a bit. It too had been out of the package store freezer for a little over 10 minutes.
We packed the beer in at 9:00 AM covered it with the two 5 lb bags of ice and checked it first at 1:40 PM and did not open it again until 7:00 AM this morning.
Watch the video to see the results and my overall recommendation:

I have always loved watching the fishermen tend to their gear, head out to fish, or unload a day’s catch along the working waterfront as day trippers and locals shop, walk, and site see around them. The ebb and flow of our communities are part of what makes them remarkable.

Cape Ann Sea Salt Is Amazing!
A new venture from James and Anna Eves recently opened to the public: Cape Ann Sea Salt!, which they describe as “artisinal finishing salt crafted with care”. It can be ordered online here and picked up at Cape Ann Giclee 20 Maplewood Ave or shipped. Flavors available include Pure Sea Salt, Lemon, Herbs D’Provence, Lavender, Black Pepper and Rosemary, and Rose Wine and Hibiscus. Price varies with size.
We ordered online, finding it very simple to navigate. We picked our order up the next day (based on our schedule). Lovely packaging. Anna recommended trying the lemon salt on a lobster roll, so we did!!! Amazing! Thanks Anna and James! Good luck on your new venture. It’s an incredible product.
