O’Maley 8th graders at the Essex Shipbuilding building 2 boats

This is my 3rd year being invited to take photos over at the Essex Shipbuilding in Essex, as the O’Maley’s 8th graders make 2 boats on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The teachers, Amy Donnelly and David Brown are terrific and the kids really learn from them.  The staff at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum help out so much teaching the kids how to build a boat.  Love these 8th graders and their enthusiasm making something with their own hands.  The photos below are from Wednesday.

1979 time capsule – E. Raymond Abbott, former Cape Pond Ice owner and Gloucester philanthropist, on the history of Day’s pond, its waterlilies and a Rockport watershed

Next time you’re heading in the direction of Wolf Hill, Good Harbor Beach or Rockport thank E. Raymond Abbott when you pass Day’s Pond, a historic man made pond in Gloucester about 1 acre in size. In 1978 Abbott wrote about his family’s association with the pond:

“On reading a recent article in the Gloucester Daily Times (July 1979) which made reference to the ‘so-called’ upper Day’s Pond off Eastern Avenue it occurred to me that the people of Gloucester might be interested in a brief history of the pond.

Years ago there were two Day brothers who owned a large tract of land which extended from the beaches and marshes all the way up to the old Rockport Road. This land, including the upper Day’s Pond, was later sold to a lawyer named Webster who lived in and owned a hotel on Pleasant Street. Later on the Webster property which also included land around Cape Pond in Rockport, came up for sale at a public auction. My father, James Abbott, bought it in June of 1905 and went into business which was later known as the Cape Pond Ice Company. In 1922, my father retired and I took over the ice business.

I will always remember a young girl, Harriet Wonson, who lived just above the upper Day’s Pond, coming to me asking if she could beautify the pond by planting water lilies in and around it. Of course, I gave my consent.

In 1943, I decided to sell the Cape Pond Ice Company. However, before doing so, I gave the upper Day’s Pond to the city of Gloucester so that the children always have a place to skate in the winter, in the summertime provide a pond for fishing, as well as a beautiful subject for our local artists to paint. It was during this same period that I was able to acquire most of the land around Cape Pond and later gave my interest to the town of Rockport to be used as a water shed.

It is my sincere hope and desire that the upper Day’s Pond will continue to provide as much enjoyment for the children of the future as it has in the past.

E. Raymond Abbott, Gloucester Daily Times Letter to the Editor, July 16, 1979

Twenty years later, Gloucester dredged Day’s Pond “as part of a watershed management plan to stabilize the pond’s ecosystem.” Massachusetts Department of Environmental Mangement awarded $2500 for the project in 1998. Marilyn Myett wrote a persuasive My View column about the pond’s vital impact in the neighborhood.

Quiet Day at Good Harbor Beach

I hadn’t been down to Good Harbor Beach in a while so I went down on a quiet Monday morning. It was sunny and nice, but not hot. I think there were more gulls than people but I walked down to the water’s edge to put my feet in the 52 degree water. It felt great! I didn’t see any plovers, but I was glad to give the lonely lifeguards someone to watch at the water’s edge.

After a tough game 7 loss we can move on. So much to be thankful for, especially Gloucester sunrises

A nice drive to work with this view.  Let the summer begin!

Beat the Bloat ~

Ayurveda Wellness Healing, LLC's avatarCape Ann Wellness

It’s Yoga Wednesday at Ayurveda Wellness Healing, LLC…knees to chest pose is a great “Beat the Bloat” pose. Just what we all need.

It’s easy to overindulge, and feel bloated and puffy after a big meal. The main cause? Not-so-savory reasons like gas and acid reflux. Instead of popping a Tums and flopping back on the couch, think about trying a natural cure.

You’ll want to do this simple stretch-also known as the wind-relieving pose-to gain relief from bloating and gas pains.

How do it:
Lie down, relax and inhale, placing your hands on your knees. Exhale, and hug your knees to your chest. Rock your knees from side to side to maximize the stretch. Stay for five to ten breaths, and release your knees. Repeat this move a few more times.

Modification: Bring your knees as far as it is comfortable. To vary the stretch, you can do…

MONARCH EGGS UPDATE

Dear Friends,

There has been more interest than anticipated in Monarch eggs. Thank you to everyone for writing!

At present, Jane has over 100 caterpillars in her kitchen terrariums. These will become butterflies within the month, and each female that emerges will lay between 300 to 700 eggs. I’ve compiled a list of everyone who left a comment. We are thrilled and grateful readers are so interested in helping raise Monarchs this summer. I will contact all as soon as Jane has a new batch of freshly laid Monarch eggs.

In the meantime, I am going to type up some FAQs. I also suggest using a glass rectangular fish tank/terrarium, with a fitted screen top, for rearing the caterpillars. If you don’t have one, they are available at our local pet stores. Also, a package of cheese cloth. Along with a plentiful supply of milkweed, that’s all you will need.

Thank you again and we’ll be in touch. ❤

EXPERIMENTAL WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP

Martin Grealish Flyer with COPY_Page_1.jpg

This EXPERIMENTAL WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP is for all age and skill levels. Everyone is welcome, from the beginner to the advanced hand in watercolor.

So get your passport ready and save some room in your bags because we are going on a journey and you will have some souvenirs to take home from this one-day workshop.

Journals are a great way to document and record one’s trips and adventures in a meaningful and lasting way. Keeping a sketchbook and journal, forces you to slow down and interact with the environment around you, to look carefully and take it all in. In so doing, stronger memories are formed to last a lifetime. When you incorporate collage, photographs, maps, postcards, pressed leaves and flowers into your record, it adds much to the experience and helps capture the full color and texture of your journey. Martin will share his inspirations, as well as his personal travel journals through Bali, Italy, Ireland, Morocco, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia.

He’ll also show you how he creates his signature “Mail Art” pieces. Martin has developed a way to turn his travel watercolor sheets into mailing envelopes. Family, friends and fellow pilgrims who receive these treasures delight at such thoughtful and personal remembrances from his travels.

And, over the course of the day, Martin will share his favorite, innovative tips and techniques for working with watercolor. You will also have an opportunity to experiment with water-based mediums in a new light.

WHAT TO BRING: your favorite watercolor supplies – paints + paper, hair dryer (if you have one), and examples of your work for show and tell.
