CLOVER PLOVERS – Just hatched Killdeer Chicks!

The Good Harbor Beach Killdeers first laid eggs in the parking lot, very close to where the Piping Plovers also had a nest scrape. After only several days, the eggs disappeared but the pair soon re-nested along the parking lot edge.

Just as do PiPl chicks, Killdeer chicks are able to feed themselves shortly after hatching; they seem to come out running and only need their feathers to dry before feeding. The chicks learn the parent’s voice commands very early on in their development and at only a few days old, the brood will immediately freeze as soon as the adults give out a warning. The name Killdeer comes from the easily recognized and oft heard call of the adults, a loud, shrill ‘kill-dee, kill-dee.’

Field Day at Cape Ann Amateur Radio Association, 6 Stanwood Street in Riverdale/Gloucester on this weekend, June 22-23, 2019

Field Day at Cape Ann Amateur Radio Association, 6 Stanwood Street in Riverdale/Gloucester on this weekend, June 22-23, 2019 – Thanks – Hank McCarl, President, CAARA

Amateur Radio “Field Day” – June 22 and 23 – Will Focus on Skill, Service, Science

WHO/WHAT  Members of the Cape Ann Amateur Association (CAARA) will be participating in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise, June 22 – 23 at 6 Stanwood Street, , Gloucester, MA. Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of Amateur Radio. This event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.

WHEN  Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23. On Saturday, June 22, from 2 PM until 2 PM Sunday, June 23.

WHERE 6 Stanwood Street, Gloucester ,MA

WHY  Field Day is a showcase for how Amateur Radio works reliably under any conditions from almost any location to create an independent communications network. “Ham radio functions completely independent of the Internet or cell phone infrastructure, can interface with tablets or smartphones, and can be set up almost anywhere in minutes. That’s the beauty of Amateur Radio during a communications outage,” says David Isgur, N1RSN, communications manager for ARRL The national association for Amateur Radio®, (www.arrl.org), which represents Amateur (or “ham”) Radio operators across the country.

“In today’s electronic do-it-yourself (DIY) environment, ham radio remains one of the best ways for people to learn about electronics, physics, meteorology, and numerous other scientific disciplines, and is a huge asset to any community during disasters or emergencies if the standard communication infrastructure goes down,” Isgur adds.
Anyone may become a licensed Amateur Radio operator. There are more than 725,000 licensed hams in the United States, as young as 9 and as old as 100. And with clubs such as CAARA it’s easy for anybody to get involved right here in Gloucester.
For more information about Field Day or Amateur Radio, contact W4RIG@arrl.net

Weary Willie

I took a little boat cruise down the Annisquam with some friends onboard the Lady Jillian with Captain Douglass and Cape Ann Harbor Tours. We happened upon this guy fishing on the “Weary Willie” and he was lucky enough to reel one in as we went by.  I couldn’t help but notice the little lady going for a dip as well.
