While all of you are receiving roses and candy today, hubs and I got each other THIS for Valentine’s Day!   Now we can just run down to the basement after work instead of trudging to the gym!   The bonus was that we both survived assembling it together haha!  Don’t be jealous!   Wishing everyone a wonderful Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday!img_7863

Flatbread Company Salem

Harborlight Montessori had a really great FUNdraising event last night at the Flatbread Company in Salem.

The families who came early in the evening had the opportunity to bowl in the Derby Lanes and then the school filled every single table in the place for a wonderful community building and fundraising event.  The proceeds of the evening will go to benefit Harborlight’s amazing Performing Arts Department and, specifically, the school’s March 29th performance of Willy Wonka, Jr.

If you haven’t been to the Flatbread Company, you should really make a point of it!  This was my first time at this location and I look forward to going back. I got the Jimmy’s Free Range Chicken Pizza….really amazing.

Jimmy’s Free-Range Chicken Pizza– Oven roasted free-range chicken, black beans, organic cilantro tomatoes, roasted corn, mozzarella and Parmesan cheese and sour cream lime drizzle and some jalapeño peppers (if you want)

The rustic and funky decor, cool bar, and warm weather outdoor seating….in addition to the yummy drinks and delicious pizza will definitely get me back there!

February A-door-nment

Happy Valentine’s Day and thank you to those who have their doors decorated! I’d been seeking these kinds of decorations for a while and keep seeing Christmas wreaths instead.  Now, we all know what’s coming next on the calendar (March 17) so I’ll be hoping to find some pretty green a-door-nment for next month!

MIDWIFE MANDY DAVIS TRAVELING TO HAITI TO TEACH HAITIAN NIRSES TO BECOME BIRTH ATTENDANTS!

My friend Mandy Davis writes,

“I’m going to Haiti at the end of March to volunteer for Midwives for Haiti. I’ll be part of a team teaching Haitian nurses to become Skilled Birth Attendants. It’s an incredible program that educates and empowers Haitian women and men to provide care to their rural communities. I’d love for you to check out their website and make a donation if possible. Any amount at all is greatly appreciated! Thank you so much ❤ ”

Midwives For Haiti educates Haitian nurses to be skilled birth attendants and then empowers them to reach the women who need their care. By scaling health worker capacity within Haiti, we are reducing maternal and infant mortality and creating sustainable change for our graduates and the families they serve. Our 5 health programs are run by and for Haitians and supported by international medical volunteers and staff. Your support improves maternal and infant health in Haiti and saves the lives of women and babies. www.midwivesforhaiti.org

POSSIBLE PUFFIN SPOTTED AT BASS ROCKS

In our Rats, Rats, and More Rats: Snowy Owl Hedwig Weekend Update #2, we shared that an Atlantic Puffin may have been seen over the weekend. Karen Piscke adds the following information and photo:

A Puffin was possibly seen at Bass Rocks. “There was a Snowy Owl on the roof of the hotel at the same time, but these birders only had eyes for the Puffin. The Puffin was hard to see, even when you knew it was there. The birder with the keen eye that spotted it said – “if it looks like as aclid, but sits differently in the water, it might be a puffin. Then the orange on the beak confirms it.”   — Karen

Atlantic Puffins are not often seen so close to our shores. They spend the summer at breeding colonies on Rocky Islands in the North Atlantic and winter out at sea (see range map).

If you see a Puffin and get a good photo, please let us know and we will post it on GMG. Thank you!

IN MEMORY OF FRED BUCK

Debbie Clarke shares a beautiful prayer in memory of Fred Buck ~

A Litany of Remembrance

Poem by Rabbi Sylvan Kamens and Rabbi Jack Riemer

In the rising of the sun and in its going down,
we remember them.
In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter,
we remember them.
In the opening of buds and in the rebirth of spring,
we remember them.
In the blueness of the sky and in the warmth of summer,
we remember them.
In the rustling of leaves and in the beauty of autumn,
we remember them.
In the beginning of the year and when it ends,
we remember them.
When we are weary and in need of strength,
we remember them.
When we are lost and sick at heart,
we remember them.
When we have joys we yearn to share,
we remember them.
So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are now a part of us,
as we remember them.

Laurie Keefe shares a vintage photo of she and Fred and friends playing music together.

Coyote Presentation Feb 26th and Feb 27th

If you can’t make the coyote presentation on Monday February 26th, we added another presentation on February 27th! Dr. Jonathan Way will present an additional seminar on Tuesday, February 27th at 10am at the Senior Center.

These talks will discuss Eastern Coyote behavior based on Dr. Jonathan’s Way research and experience. We hope this will help us to learn about coyote behavior and how we can live with our coyote neighbors and avoid conflicts.

I hope to see you there!

Look Who We Bumped Into: Olympic Gold

Finn and I came in hot to his game the other day in Saugus.  As we hustled into the rink his coach directed us into the proper locker room.  As we went to enter the locker room, a woman came out and held the door open for us.  I’m sure she could tell that we were running late and Finn was anxious to get on the ice.  Finn’s coach then told me that she was a former USA Woman’s Hockey gold medal winner.

Us Gloucester folk immediately know that means she skated for our very own Ben Smith.  Ben led the USA Woman’s hockey team to a Gold Medal, their first ever nonetheless, in Nagano back in 1998.  He is currently over in South Korea serving as the Director of Player Personnel for the 2018 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team.

I was sad to have missed the opportunity to really meet her….but, was lucky that our paths crossed again after the game.  I introduced myself and told her that Ben Smith is my husband’s Godfather.  I then introduced her to Finn.  Upon hearing that her name was Colleen, I knew immediately that she was Colleen Coyne and I was thrilled to snap a photo of her and Finn to share with Freddy…and later Ben.

It was great to meet her….and she couldn’t have been more gracious or kind!  Even cooler to have met her the very same weekend that this year’s Winter Games were kicking off.

Thanks, Colleen, for taking the time to chat with Finn….he was super inspired as was I!

Saturday Morning Birding

Our Bald Eagle program at Joppa Flats was cancelled due to rain, so we decided to go on a Saturday Morning Birding tour with Mass Audobon guide Dave Williams.  GMG Jimmy and I are distinctly NOT birders, just interested in birds and taking photos.  Although the more experienced were disappointed by the number of birds we saw, we were very pleased to bring home several decent shots.

We found a snowy owl at Parker River Wildlife Refuge.  A note if you intent to visit: a large portion of the main road in was closed on Saturday due to icy conditions and you may not be able to get as far into the Refuge as you might like.

We also visited the Salisbury Beach State Reservation.  Our guide believes this is a juvenile bald eagle.  This is zoomed in quite a little and has lost a few pixels but is still pretty interesting. That’s as close as we got to an eagle on this trip.
