On Monday Sept 12th, Tom Costello from NBC Nightly News visited Ocean Alliance to shoot a story on SnotBot.
Mr. Costello was accompanied by his producer Jay Blackman, a videographer, and soundman. The weather was absolutely beautiful and the NBC team were on site from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm.
Our CEO and chief SnotBot pilot Iain Kerr was interviewed and filmed flying SnotBot. Understanding the unique perspective of a drone, he offered to shoot some video of Mr. Costello for the news story with SnotBot. NBC are now heading to interview Dr. Scott Baker at Oregon State University, who is analyzing SnotBot samples from our most recent expedition to Alaska.
24 NEA National Medal of Arts and NEH National Humanities Medals will be awarded to artists from our country in a special ceremony on September 22, 2016. NEA and NEH “serve different constituents”. Right. Anyhow, celebrating 24 exciting nominees rather than 12 is great! The event will be live streamed at www.whitehouse.gov/live. Both agencies are celebrating their 50th anniversary and request and receive nearly identical budgets, ie. 146 million FY2015.

A wider North Shore net pulls out big names like John Updike/Ipswich (NEH 2003). From the NEH press release: “Since 1996, when the first National Humanities Medal was given, 175 individuals have been honored, inclusive of this year’s recipients. Rudolfo Anaya’s novel Bless Me, Ultima, is a part of the NEA Big Read, grants awarded mostly for one town events with a book that’s pre-selected. Our local Cape Ann Reads effort will target 4 communities and as Deborah French, Director TOHP Burnham Library comments, “ WE will create one book to be read by four communities!”

Pick #2: Fish Box Derby
Thanks to Greg Bover’s post back on August 31st, I have had the Fish Box Derby on my radar for a couple of weeks! Which is great, because I often miss it. This year’s event takes place on Sunday, September 18th at noon.
Today we piled into the car and drove to Museum Textile Services to meet Camille and see the coat. The mood was exciting because we’ve never actually seen it! The last time we wrote was almost a month ago to the day—you can read that Cape Ann Beacon update below our sign off. A business on Main Street asked us to stop by because of that article which we’ll update next.
The coat is looking pretty good! It needs finishing touches but the conservator has done an excellent job. A lot of her work will be invisible but will keep it safe. We saw some cool things close up like the form, conservator sculpting tools, original patches and buttons. We inspected the back and saw some threads that give evidence that buttons were once there. She told us originally the coat fabric was a linsey-woolsey which means a linen and wool mix. Anyway we had a great time—see some photos here https://goo.gl/photos/K9ywkvRXLEMUFrFa7. The stand in the photo is not the final stand, but it is the same color/wood.
The newest Smithsonian museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture is opening September 24th. Black veterans of the Civil War had the idea for a museum in 1915. We wrote them last year and will be excited to see what the museum thinks about Gloucester’s Bacheler Civil War coat.
Reporter Alyse Diamantides met us on July 12 at the Gloucester High School. She was interested in writing an article about the coat for the Cape Ann Beacon. She was in Gloucester and next she was going to write about Pastaio. We talked about the poll (Sorry the poll expired. We didn’t realize it would only last three days. Please still e-mail any vote you have to gloucestercoatkids@gmail.com.) Alyse wrote a fantastic article about the coat display possibilities. Alyse sent us a link. Statement of the Gloucester Police Department
GLOUCESTER — Acting Police Chief David Quinn issues the following statement:
“Last week, I was notified that Chief Leonard Campanello would be taking personal time away from the police department, and I was named acting chief because Assistant Chief JohnMcCarthy is on vacation out of the country.
Yesterday, Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken notified the Gloucester Police Department that Chief Campanello has been placed on indefinite administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation initiated by the city. I am unable to comment on that investigation or what it entails.
“However, I want to assure our residents, business owners, and visitors that the Gloucester Police Department is fully operational. The work of the department continues, and the safety of all is our mission and number one concern.
“The Gloucester Police Department ANGEL Initiative continues unchanged. The Gloucester Police Department received a participant on Tuesday evening, and the program remains open and able to place participants into recovery programs.
“Assistant Chief McCarthy will return to work on Thursday and assume the role of Acting Chief at that time.
“On behalf of the entire Gloucester Police Department, I offer my sincere thanks to everyone for their patience and understanding at this time.”
Members of the media have also requested information regarding Sgt. Det. Sean Connors. The Gloucester Police Department can confirm that he has been placed on administrative leave effective Sept. 8. The department does not comment on personnel matters.
