Toot. Toot.

That was me blowing my horn.  Only it isn’t really my horn.  It is the horn that belongs to phenomenal school where I am incredibly privileged to teach.

While I could always wax poetically about many of the special things that happen there on a daily basis, I don’t.  So, when I do…you know it is going to be even extra special.  Like today.  This isn’t just any proud moment though.  This one also includes the one and only, Sista Felicia.  This week, for one super fun night, Harborlight-Stoneridge Montessori and Sista Felicia joined forces.

See, our Middle School students put their wonderfully creative minds together and planned themselves a pretty exceptional week-long field study trip to Gloucester. Gloucester may have, at first, seemed like an odd choice since these students all hail from the North Shore area, but given the fact that they were excited to dig deeper, explore further, and learn more substantially about this special place we call home, it wasn’t really an odd choice at all.

They rented themselves a pretty sweet home on the beach, created a week-long vision of learning, drew a logo, and planned a week to end all weeks.  With the direction of their teachers, but the license to make their own decisions, they planned a week that includes working closely with Tony Wilbur at Maritime Gloucester, a sail on the Ardelle, some time on the Adventure, learning how to SUP, a trip to Cape Pond Ice, a meeting with Angela Sanfilippo, a visit with a couple of local artists, a lobstering trip, a visit to Hammond Castle, a walk on Dog Bar Breakwater, and much (much) more.  Oh, wait…much more…including breaking in their vacation pad by preparing an exceptionally delicious meal with Sista Felicia.

Don’t be surprised if you hear more about this trip in the week to come, but in the meantime I wanted to show you how fantastic it was to have my worlds collide. Felicia, no surprise, led these students like the expert she is.  She had them working all areas of the kitchen with enthusiasm and, in the end, a fantastic meal consisting of appetizers, “cocktails”, salad, main courses (obviously including locally caught fish), and a dessert….but, most importantly, teamwork…was served.

Thanks so much, Felicia!  A side note, that probably goes with out saying, is that the food was delicious and received accolades from all.

GLOUCESTER STAGE COMPANY LAUNCHES 37th SEASON WITH PETER SHAFFER’S LETTICE AND LOVAGE

unnamed

Gloucester Stage Company kicks off the 37th season of producing professional theater on Cape Ann with Peter Shaffer’s Lettice and Lovage opening on May 19 and running through June 11 at 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA. Written by Tony Award-winning playwright Peter Shaffer, Lettice and Lovage follows tour guide Lettice Douffet as she leads tours through an obscure English mansion utterly devoid of interest. Lettice decides to “Enlarge! Enliven! Enlighten!” her tours by fabricating fanciful stories, which ignites the wrath of her employer, Lotte Schon, an inspector from the Preservation Trust. The battle that ensues rapidly turns to friendship as the ladies embark on a series of escapades in this delightful comedy. Directed by Gloucester Stage veteran Benny Sato Ambush, Lettice and Lovage features Academy Award nominated actress and Gloucester resident Lindsay Crouse as Lettice Douffet, Marya Lowry as Lotte Schon, Mark S. Cohen as Bardolph and Janelle Day Mills as Miss Framer. Lettice and Lovage reunites Lindsay Crouse with director Benny Sato Ambush. The pair collaborated on Gloucester Stage’s critically acclaimed 2013 production of Driving Miss Daisy.

Saturday Evening Girls Talk at the Cape Ann Museum

May 17, 2016 ~ Cape Ann Museum

Progress and Opportunity in the Early 1900s

Saturday, May 21 at 2:00 p.m.

An illustrated lecture presented by Dr. Dorothy E. King

The Saturday Evening Girls (S.E.G.) was a progressive social club organized in Boston in 1899 to assimilate young immigrant women into American culture. The “girls” who took part in the group met on Saturday evenings and were introduced to literature, art and history. They were also given the opportunity to develop craft and business skills at the Paul Revere Pottery in North Boston. The bowl shown here is one such example of the skilled craftsmanship that came out of this social experiment. S.E.G. pottery is now very valuable and highly sought after. The S.E.G. is connected to Cape Ann through a summer camp that was built for the girls’ use at Wingaersheek Beach in West Gloucester in 1906.

Dr. King, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Penn State Harrisburg will be joined by Joanne Riley, archivist at UMASS Boston and Roz Kramer, daughter of pioneer Saturday Evening Girls (SEG) researcher Barbara Kramer for the lecture.

Attention All!

The Gloucester International Dory Racing Committee will be hosting a fundraiser at the St. Peter’s Club Friday, May 20th at 6 pm. All are welcome to attend for a fun night of games, drinks, apps, music, dancing, and lots of cool items for raffles! Proceeds from the event will go towards the expansion of our program and offerings to the community which will allow our members to continue promoting maritime heritage, friendly competition, and fun. Not many people in our community are familiar with the history of Dory’s and how much importance they hold in the start of our fishing industry. Our goal is to educate people more about this cause and possibly even recruit new members to try a sport that represents the meaning of their hometown. So come join us for a fun night and help keep this tradition going strong! Tickets will be sold prior to the event for $10 or can be purchased at the door. For any questions about the fundraiser, to purchase tickets, or if you’d like to make donations for raffles please contact the following members. Hope to see a lot of you there!

We’re not always right but we’re right about this

Once in a while we pick a winner.  This is one of those times … trust me.  Ruby Rose Fox will be a major Rock Star in the not-too-distant future.

We’ve presented Ruby Rose Fox on stage twice: Opening for Martha Davis + The Motels last April at Beverly’s Larcom Theatre (where Sheila Roberts Orlando took the photo at right) and in a co-bill with Jesse Dee at The Cabot last July (see this review).

In addition to being one of the best singers and songwriters we’ve encountered over the past dozen or so years, Ruby produces extraordinary videos (see them here).

Today she premieres a double feature.  That’s right, folks … 2 videos at once.  See a review by Infectious Magazine here.  Better yet, watch and enjoy, below (top volume and full screen recommended).  You can see Ruby at Katrina’s on June 18th with Gloucester’s own Inge Berge opening (another one of our favorite singer/songwriters/video producers — see some of Inge’s videos here and listen an excellent Inge Berge song below).

Gloucester Speaks Wins Awesome Gloucester Grant

Sophia Zerelli hands Shep Abbot $1,000 in cash as Rona Tyndall, MC, looks on. (Bing McGilvray photo)

Last evening at the Gloucester House the local chapter of the worldwide Awesome Foundation held its monthly Pitch Night and after hearing three terrific proposals chose Shep Abbot’s Gloucester Speaks documentary project as the winner of a $1,000 grant. Shep is interviewing a wide range of Gloucester folks to capture their views at this pivotal time of change and renewal in the city.

Awesome Gloucester solicits proposals from the entire community and chooses the top ideas to attend a public Pitch Night on the evening of the third Monday of each month. Submitters make their case before the 20 local trustees who have each donated $50 toward the monthly award. The top vote getters walk away with $1000 in cash, no strings attached. Proposals to make Gloucester more awesome can be made at Awesome Gloucester.

Fisherman’s Park

Took a run up to Fisherman’s Park after work last night to see how the clouds looked over the city.   While I was there I met DJ with his daughter Isabella and nephew Drew who were having a blast sliding down the rock.    I’m not sure their mothers will be happy that they might need new pants but they were having fun!

Long Hill Gardens

One of my “picks” for last week was the Annual Plant Sale at the Trustees, Long Hill Gardens.  While I didn’t make the actual plant sale, I did take a group of my “grown-up” students for a walk up there on Saturday afternoon for a quick botany lesson.  It truly never fails to disappoint and if you haven’t hiked the property, you really should.
