School District Bans Playing Tag, Claiming It’s Not Safe For Kids
Are you a tag survivor?
A Washington state school district has banned the game of tag for kids at recess, citing student safety.
“While at play, especially during recess and unstructured time, students are expected to keep their hands to themselves. The rationale behind this is to ensure the physical and emotional safety of all students,” Mercer Island School District communications director Mary Grady told local news station Q13Fox on Wednesday.
Parents weren’t impressed.
“Good grief, our kids need some unstructured playtime,” Kelsey Joyce told the station. Melissa Neher said, “I played tag. I survived.” Still another parent noted that now her son walks around chatting about video games during recess, rather than getting more vigorous exercise.
Does this even surprise anyone any more?
Remember when we were kids after a pee wee football game championship all the kids piled into the back of pick up trucks driving around town and blared the horns on our way to get ice creams? Could you imagine the horror with today’s parents passing judgment? What is it kids have to be strapped down in 3 point harnesses til they are over ten years old nowadays? Forget about riding in the front seat. Oh man, what is this world coming to? How much softer can we make today’s youth?
TAG? REALLY???????
Next lets ban apple pie because someone might burn the roof of their mouths. Bananaheads.

Good God, kids are not made of marshmallow, you want your children to be safe but they also need to me able to sustain a few bumps and bruises..

Hmmm… seems I survived dodge ball ( barely ) and “tackle the guy with the ball” ! I too have wondered when the paradigm shift occurred. My sister and I were raised by the same mom about 10 years apart and my sister totally was on board with this modern parenting.
Of course it is very easy to give out pointers when I’m half of a ‘DINK’ couple!
