UPDATE MA State House official Governor portraits come and go plus Dorothy Lamour
Cat Ryan submits-
I asked why Governor Baker selected Governor Volpe’s portrait for the Governor’s office at the State House.
Here’s an update and photograph from the State House curator, Susan Greendyke Lachevre:
“I have attached an image of the Volpe portrait, which was selected by the governor himself, as is customary, for display in his office. Governor Baker’s father served under Volpe while he was secretary of transportation In Washington…The State House is one of the oldest state capitols in the country, and the building is on the National Register. Renovations started almost as soon as it was occupied in 1798 with the coppering of the wooden dome. As a functioning seat of government and a popular visitor attraction, it gets a lot of wear and tear, and is constantly undergoing careful historic renovation or updating somewhere within its 600,000 square feet. I doubt if it will ever stop.”
Catherine adds:
The official Governor portrait for John Anthony Volpe was painted by Pietro Annigoni, 1963. Governor Romney and Governor Cellucci also picked the Volpe portrait by Pietro Annigoni. What about Governor Volpe? For his first term, Volpe selected a portrait of Governor Christian Herter. Herter’s father was artist Albert Herter who painted the murals in the House chamber. His grandfather, Christian, owned Herter Brothers, the legendary 19th-century cabinetmaking and decorating firm. I don’t have a picture of the Governor Herter portrait.
For Volpe’s second term, he displayed the Robert Gordon Hardie portrait of Governor Marcus Morton (1840-1841, 1843-1844).
For Volpe’s third term, he chose a portrait of Governor Leverett Saltonstall III. The Saltonstall portrait remained on view through 1975 for Governor Francis Sargent. At that time the predecessor portrait was displayed behind the governor.
I don’t have a great photo of the Saltonstall portrait, but I liked the signing ceremony with Hollywood star, Dorothy Lamour, visiting the State House promoting and presenting a War Bond prize:
“To the winners of the Ward Bond prize awarded to the first set of twin War Bond Babies Contest…Whereas the Motion Picture Industry has been designated as the spearhead of the US Treasury Department September Billion Dollar Drive for the sale of War Bonds and Stamps…extend thanks to the Massachusetts Division of the War Activities Committee and the undersigned managers and theater owners for untiring efforts…” The Governor’s office looks packed.

Horses, Hounds, and Hors d’oeuvres
I know that I wrote about attending a polo match at Myopia Polo last summer, but it totally bears repeating.
We went last Sunday and had such a great afternoon. Â I think that with a little bit of planning ahead and some proper picnic packing, an afternoon at the polo fields with a great group of friends is a phenomenal way to spend a day.
If you get there early enough (gates open at 1:30) you and your friends can score some tailgating spots right along the sidelines and eat, drink, and hobnob all while appreciating one heck of a sport!
Tickets are only $10 for adults and children under 12 are free. Â Dogs are even allowed as long as they are kept on a leash. Â With that last tidbit of information, we may have just lost Joey, but the rest of us should totally go.

Spork You!
Just got my new Spork for the dock. Soooo tired of using plastic utensils, having them break off inside my chicken or melt inside my pizza slice, not to mention how bad plastic is for the environment.
Ordered it on Amazon and can not believe how sturdy it is despite being unbelievably light. I guess that’s the thing about titanium and why it’s such a highly regarded material that they use it in surgical equipment.
order yours here- Light My Fire Titanium Spork
GOOD MORNING FROM CABOT FARM!
For Nancy Lutts. Thank you dear lady!
After collecting Monarch eggs last weekend, Nancy graciously allowed me to return to her gorgeous Cabot Farm to film and to photograph. I was there at sunrise, which is relatively early in the day for butterfly sightings however, I did see four Monarchs and two were females depositing eggs all over the field!

NORTH SHORE ARTS ASSOC/Small Works Exhibition
The historic North Shore Arts Association opens an exciting Artist Members’ Small Works Exhibit, July 30 – August 29, and offers its First Juried Associate Members’ Show of the 2015 Season, August 6 – August 29.  **Receptions for both the Small Works and Associate Members’ Exhibits will be held Sunday, August 23, 1 – 3 pm.  Refreshments served. Open and free to the public.
Many giants of the art world including Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Vermeer painted much treasured and highly prized Small Art works. The appeal of small works is manifold with flexible display options: the work can be clustered in and around other pieces; or placed in tiny, sometimes awkward spaces; or hung in discreet groupings, and easily placed on small easels atop a side table, and, often, lower price points are also an advantage. The main appeal, however, is to enjoy an intimate and crystallized expression of the artist’s focused vision.
Come join the North Shore Arts Association as it celebrates its “Year Of The Artist!” with a Small Works members exhibition and Associate Members Show.

Pet of the Week- Brody
Did someone say goofy puppy? Why yes, that’s me for sure! I am a sweet and playful boy with lots of energy, curiosity and love to share. Do you know anything about these things they call “leashes”? I am trying hard to teach the humans around here to walk in the direction I want to go. Want to take classes together? Like going for walks in the woods or playing in the water? Maybe we could help each other out, life is always much better when you have a friend by your side!
Visit www.capeannanimalaid.org for more information about Brody and all the other animals waiting for homes here at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter.
