Unofficial 34 DNF (Did Not Finish) Blackburn Challenge

Unofficially 34 DNF (Did Not Finish) Blackburn Challenge and some that did finish needed a little help. Jimmy T threw a double outrigger a line before they were kindling and hamburger on the barnacle coated granite of Halibut Point. The next point was just as messy.

Here a white Epic Surfski flips right at my feet at Andrews Point. My little iPhone 6 does not really capture the drama as the dude in the red sea kayak hears the splash and turns around. (1-2) By 5 he has pulled up even, steadies the Epic as Epic paddler thanks him for stopping and hops back up into the seat. In 8-9 fellow travelers stop by to see if they can offer assistance but red kayak has it well in hand.

Meanwhile they drift from about 60 yards out to about 20 yards which is getting very close to the surf zone. Blowing hard straight in with decent swells. I was getting ready to greet them as their boats turned into splinters on the granite. Just when it seemed like they took just a little too much time the Epic takes off. (11-13)

Red Sea Kayak back pedals a touch (14) to turn around then sweeps in close before heading off (15) to surf the waves across Sandy Bay. The wind and surf were roaring but he was so close that when I called out “nice job red kayak” he tipped his hat and was gone.

Follow along 1 down to 6 then 7 down to 13.

Hi Joey.

Tonight we watched this storm from Lobsta Land. We were there for my husband’s annual ‘pre-Blackburn carb-loading meal’ –  shrimp provencal and an Allagash White beer. Great views of this storm as it moved up the Annisquam and over the salt marsh; just missed a photo of an impressive lightening bolt. :O While there met 2 great guys from Ottawa Canada, Chris and Bruce, in town for the Blackburn. Chris told us he was so focused while training in the harbor, he “almost hit one of the tall ships.” From his description, I think it was the Adventure. Whoever she was, the captain had to blow his horn to prevent a collision. Hope to see you at tomorrow’s Blackburn Challenge!

Enjoy.   Karen

Ivana Strong Bracelets

Hi Joey, my wife Amy and I are trying to raise some money for my best friend Daughter. Amy talked to her father Ed Collard and said you may help post this on your site?
Ivana is a 7 month old beautiful baby girl, daughter of Vinny and Giacqueline Parisi.  She has been at Children’s Hospital for just about a month with a weak heart.  Many people in the community have been praying for little Ivana and her family appreciates the thoughts and prayers.  In order to assist with Ivana’s care as well as support the Children’s Hospital, Ivana Strong bracelets have been created and are being sold for $5 each. Ivana is taking baby steps in the right direction but her little heart still has a lot of work to do.  If you would like to purchase an Ivana Strong bracelet, please contact Adam Orlando, via Facebook or at 978-423-0845

OYSTERS ROCKEFELLER-TO-DIE-FOR AT PASSPORTS!

Eric Lorden, I am begging you, please add the Oysters Rockefeller to your regular menu!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oysters Rockerfeller Passports Restaurant ©Kim Smith 2015

Thursday night we attended Passports Sparkling Wine Dinner and it was out of this world delish. We Loved everything–the sparkling wine selections, especially the creamy Blanc de Blanc Brut Dargent from France–and each and everyone one of the dishes was fantastic. But if I had to choose a favorite of the favorites, I must say that Eric’s Oysters Rockefeller is sublime. Perhaps he’ll share his recipe–I am going to get right on that!

Oysters Rockefeller was created in 1899 by Jules Alcitore at the world renowned New Orleans restaurant Antoine’s. At that time there was a shortage of snails coming into America from Europe. Jules was looking for a substitute and he wanted the replacement to be local to avoid future problems in procuring the product.

My copy of Antoine’s cookbook does not include the recipe; to this day, it is still top secret.

The sesame encrusted diver scallops with jasmine rice was definitely an entree I’m inspired to try making at home.

If You’re One of the Few People NOT at the Bluefin Blowout, This is What You’re Missing

Yummy beer, fancy cars, fantastic music, a phenomenal view, awesome people, the Bruins’ Bob Sweeney, the Mayor….and, well, me.  Just saying. Be forewarned that the beer vendors are packing up…but, the bar is still open for service.

Rumor has it, and it is still unconfirmed, that there may also be a fish coming in……

Blackburn Challenge 2015

Rick and I went out kayaking to watch the Blackburn Challenge from Corliss Landing.  The head wind was amazing and wish the rowers all the best.

Incredibly Observant FOB, Sandy!

fish in foregroundSandy commented on my post yesterday https://goodmorninggloucester.wordpress.com/2015/07/24/weather-heading-into-smiths-cove/ asking if I had seen the big fish in the foreground of the first photo.  I hadn’t seen it and thought she was just imagining a fish until I blew up the photo and adjusted the exposure.  Indeed there is a big fish in the foreground of the photo.  It is a metal sculpture at the water’s edge in Kim and Linda’s yard where I was photographing, but I hadn’t noticed it because I was so focused on the incredible light on the boats in the distance.  Amazing observation Sandy!
