Nichole’s Picks of the Weekend 2/21 and 2/22
Is it wrong to simply repost last week’s Blog Post about Picks of the Week for February Vacation? I mean…they still all hold true!
See all of last week’s ideas to kill time over vacation here!
Please don’t forget that in addition to all of the top picks from last week, I HIGHLY recommend:
1. The pool at Cape Ann Marina and Resort. We bought a vacation week pass last Friday and have already used it a few times and had a blast! If you don’t want to invest in a vacation week pass now that the week is almost over, Day Passes are available! Check it out for sure!
2. Appleton Farm in Ipswich is offering a variety of fun activities this weekend!
Including:
Farm Fun Nature Crafts and Cookies Saturday 2/21 10:00-12:00
Meet the Maples Tour Saturday 2/21 1:00-2:00
The Mini Moos Tour Saturday 2/21 2:30-3:30
3. Pinocchio at the Wheelock Family Theatre
The world premiere of an original adaptation influenced by Japanese theatrical traditions, Pinocchio’s adventures are told through mystical creatures, live musicians, and gymnastic choreography, making the transformation of an animated puppet into a real live boy, a magical, dynamic, and deeply moving experience.

Did You Know That ANYONE Can Become A Member of the Audubon Society?
In case you were unaware, The Audubon Society is not a restricted organization. It is comprised entirely of people like you and me. Massachusetts alone has over 100,000 member citizens that belong to the Massachusetts Audubon Society. Here is a link to get you started: Get Involved.
Particularly for Massachusetts residents, the Massachusetts Audubon Society’s website is especially helpful in identifying birds observed locally; see the Massachusetts Breeding Bird Atlas Find a Bird Page. The Common Eider seen on Rogers Street, and guided to safety by Thomas Donahue, is on the Mass Audubon Find A Bird page and you can read more about this interesting bird here: Common Eider. The atlas isn’t always helpful, for example, GMG contributor Donna recently spotted a Horned Grebe. That particular species is not included on the page however, it was easily identified by looking at other sources, including books and websites such as Cornell’s All About Birds website.

Reminder: Cape Ann Winter Birding Weekend, a program sponsored by the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Massachusetts Audubon Society was rescheduled for the weekend of February 27 through the 29th. Click here for details.

Homemade Bratwurst on my Ice Dams!

After the relentless Snowzilla #1 through #4 even a well insulated house is going to have an ice dam. Ice freezes along the roof line and now any water percolating under the snow gets trapped and backs up under the shingles into your house leaking into that lovely ceiling fan. Turning the fan on high is a fun way to humidify your house but eventually you will burn your house down with an electrical short.
Solution: Roof Sausage and we’re not talking Ambie’s. My favorite looks like Karl’s Sausage Kitchen bratwurst. Take a spare pair of pantyhose and cut the leg off. Fill the leg with calcium chloride (that is the Snow Melt you are throwing on the walkway). If your ice dam is up high, tie a line to the end and toss it up there so it crosses the ice dam.

Done! Like a little beaver’s nightmare that sausage will cut across the ice dam and make a path for the water to drain.
Because we live on Cape Ann you know that one of these storms will eventually arrive and dump four inches of rain and you really don’t want the inside of your house to look like a tropical rain forest.
Rubber Duck Pro Tip: You can buy “roof pucks” to do this but stuffing socks and pantyhose is so much more fun. Go buy the big 50 lb bag of rock salt at Ace or Building Center then pour it into that 5 gallon bucket you have kicking around. Drop a mason jar on top and stick it on your front porch. Now you can fill a sock and toss or sprinkle some on that icy walkway. When you fill the bucket from a 50 lb bag, about two shovel fulls will not fit. Just catapult that up on your roof.
The wrong way: Do not use organic, non-gluten, non-GMO, non-fluoride Kosher Pink Gourmet Himalayan rock salt. Well, you can but only buy Rubber Duck brand, $35 a pound with 81 essential minerals. Call now. Also, send in your roof sausage photos to Joey. Extra points if you tie a Rubber Duck on the sausage.

GLOUCESTER (CBS) – A stranded duck was plucked from the frigid waters of Gloucester after it
became tangled in a net and stuck on the ice.
Several Animal Rescue League of Boston members
were involved in the rescue, including two who donned cold water suits to rescue the duck.
According to the Animal Rescue League, a rescuer was tethered to shore and made his way out to the duck.
The bird was rescued, and volunteers discovered that it was stuck on the ice because it was “severely tangled” in a net.

The Minglewood Shuffle on Thursday night is moved to Alchemy (yes, Alchemy–no longer Pinoli) at 3 Duncan Street (a side street that runs between Main St and Rogers St) in Gloucester. The reason for the last minute switch is that the floor at Minglewood were redone and the work didn’t get finished in time for the Shuffle.

Hi there! I saw your video for Grape & Ginger Ale Punch on Cook123 and I am in love with the style of your punch bowl. Do you happen to know the brand so I can research it and try to find one to buy ? I would appreciate it very much. I’ve been looking around all morning online trying to find one that looks like it but I haven’t been able to find anything. Thanks,
Ali Phillips

I too adore this beautiful Blown Glass Punch Bowl, from my Mariposa Collection! Mariposa products make everything look and taste extra special! It’s what I use daily when entertaining friends and family in and outside my home! I find this punch bowl to be the perfect size for small gatherings. I’m not sure if it’s a retired collection piece. Best to contact the Mariposa Company’s customer service department directly for more information.
