The North Shore Health Project is pleased to announce that the 4^th Annual Community Health Activist Award is being awarded to Sefatia Romeo Theken. Sefatia is being honored for her years of service and dedication to the community as the Health and Human Services Liaison at Addison Gilbert Hospital. She is also a tireless member of the Gloucester City Council. Sefatia deserves all of our support and thanks for the job she has done, and continues to do, for the city of Gloucester and all of Cape Ann.

Please join us as we celebrate Sefatia on Thursday morning, May 29^th, 2014 at the Gloucester House, Rogers Street, Gloucester. Breakfast will be served at 7:30AM with remarks from local officials, colleagues and perhaps even Sefatia herself, and the program will conclude by 9AM.

Beauport Opens for the Season This Saturday, May 24

Beauport, the Sleeper – McCann House opens for the 2014 season on Saturday, May 24.
This eclectic summer home of one of America’s first professional interior designers, Henry Davis Sleeper, is perched on a rock ledge offering spectacular views of the Gloucester Harbor.  The house is over 40 rooms and filled with his lifetime collection of glass, ceramics, furniture, silhouettes, architectural salvage and curiosities in every nook and cranny.
Hours at Beauport are from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tours are on the hour with the last tour at 4:00 p.m.  Beauport is free for members of Historic New England and Gloucester Residents with proof of residency.

We met a while ago at Local Colors – I am one of the jewelers there.

Over the past few years, I have been creating wax seal charms that have been quite popular.

Most recently I created a St. Peter charm with the Fiesta in mind – the charm comes in silver and bronze and also comes with a story about St. Peter – see attached picture

A few years ago I made charms of the Man at the Wheel and Motif #1  — also attached –

I am trying to find a way to get those designs out there – they are my tribute to the North Shore as I have loved living here for the last 20 years!

Cape Ann TV  will hold its annual meeting next Tuesday night, May 27th, from 7-8pm, at 38 Blackburn Center in the Blackburn Industrial Park, Gloucester.
Bob Kelly, Chair of Mass Access, an organization comprised of local public access cable TV stations throughout the state, will be the guest speaker. He will speak about the future of television with a particular focus on the public access cable TV sector.
There have been a multitude of recent changes in the communications landscape recently with more to come. These changes put local public access stations like Cape Ann Television at great risk.  Industry disruptors like Netflix, Hulu, and Apple, combined with major corporate mergers within the media industry will require a re-evaluation and completely new negotiations to allow local community television to flourish.
This is a topic that affects us all. The mission of Cape Ann TV is to bring Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester, and Essex the highest quality, local programming. Community support is a vital component of this mission.
All residents of Cape Ann are invited to attend the meeting.

Hi Joey!

​I’ve recently taken a new position at the YMCA in Marblehead (a bit of a commute from Gloucester, but I don’t mind!), and I am the new Camp Director for Children’s Island Day Camps. This year we wanted to make the camp more accessible to Cape Ann families, and are offering boat transportation to the Island from Manchester on the Double Eagle boat!

We’re hosting a “Meet & Greet” with the Double Eagle at Masconomo Park this Sunday, 12-2pm. Families can check out the boat, meet the Camp Director, and get more info about the camps and programs on Children’s Island.

I’m excited to spread the word to our Cape Ann families! Attached is a photo I took on the Island last week showing our Rangers area, Flagpole gathering, Back Beach, and the Main Lodge.

Painter, Claudia Kaufman, Contemporary Realist

“I Can See Right Through You”
Show runs June 3rd – June 22nd,  Opening Reception  Sunday, June 8th,  2 – 4 p.m.   

Painting in oils, Claudia Kaufman describes herself as a contemporary realist whose  works are studies in observation – especially the effect on objects seen through transparent media like glass and clear plastic.
     Her still life set ups are of familiar objects that are deceptively simple, yet complex.  Stopping short of photo-realism, Kaufman says, “I work to keep the signs of my hand and brushstroke in my work, and am particularly intrigued by the drama of light, reflection, transparency and strong shadows.  For me, the trick is in the looking and the seeing; the breaking down of an image to shapes of color, planes, and spatial relationships.”  She is fascinated at the effects of laying one area of color against another to define light, space and weight whether painting landscape, figures or still life. 
    Kaufman’s work is visually exciting –  somehow offering an apple or lemon as a    stunning surprise to the viewer.   Come experience the adventure of common items in stimulating presentation as they become completely fresh and uncommonly unique.

Water Color & Oils – SOLO SHOW ED STEINHILPER

“Favorite Places on Cape Ann”

  Tuesday, June 3rd – Sunday, June 22nd, 2014  

“Of all the places on the East coast I love to paint Cape Ann,” says veteran painter
Ed Steinhilper.   He finds that the diversity of terrain – fresh water ponds, salt water marshes, dunes, inlets, seacoasts, and architecture native to New England – provides him the most stimulating subjects to capture.  While he often uses the oil medium, his favorite is watercolor painting because “it allows me the freedom to pour and mix color, to create loose, transparent, and spontaneous images.”   Steinhilper loves to “go wild” when painting skies.  He is excited by the challenge of capturing the subtleties and intensity of light sources as they relate to horizon placement. 
    Don’t miss this Art Institute of Pittsburgh trained artist and teacher whose work, over his fifty years of painting,  reflects the influences of internationally known artists like Edward Wesson and James Fletcher Watson, as well as some of The Cape Ann School’s well known artists – Charles Movalli and Marilyn Swift.  His work is featured in many galleries and private collections.

On Saturday June 7, 2014 at 8:00 PM Chorus North Shore conducted by Sonja Dahlgren Pryor  performs Beethoven Mass in C Major at Our Lady of Hope Church on Linebrook Road in Ipswich.

The Chorus is joined by soloists Rochelle Bard, soprano; Stephanie Kacoyanis, contralto; Omar Najmi, tenor; Mark Morgan, baritone and the Festival Orchestra.

Ms Pryor says “I’m excited the Chorus is able to perform this wonderful masterpiece by Beethoven who only wrote two masses.   The Hallelujah Chorus from  “Christ on the Mount of Olives” supplements the Mass and the concert will end with the audience joining the Chorus and orchestra in singing “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee.”  It promises to be a thrilling evening of beautiful music.”

Dear Joey,

As the curator of the Rocky Neck Art Colony “Pixel Revolution” Show, I want to draw your attention to a related show sponsored next Sunday, by RNAC, held at the Cape Ann Community Cinema, as shown on the attached flyer (Sunday 25, 4 pm, CACC).

While the RNAC show comprises digital art stills that are on exhibit from May 15 to June 1, the Sunday show comprises 1 ½ hours of “visual music” animations by four North American animators. This is a unique event for the Cape Ann artist community. The name of these animations is due to the fact that the animators are, with one exception, also the composers of the music the animations integrate, so that the sound/image relationship is artistically and competently controlled, and is not just an “accompaniment” as usual. Jean Detheux, Dennis Miller, and Sylvia Pengilly are internationally known animators who have become models for younger artists the world over.

Could you kindly make this unique event known to your readership this weekend, pointing also to the exhibit at RNAC shown til June 1st.

In addition, on June 20, 7 pm, RNAC will sponsor an artist talk by the 4 local artists of the Pixel Revolution exhibit, an educational event to which the public is invited.

Together with the stills show, the animation show is meant to educate the public about digital visual art, comprising animation stills, digital painting, and photomontage and –collage, works entirely created, not just “touched up”, by using computers (no boats and gulls).
