Fish on Fridays

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

This week Kathy finishes up her series on the Felicia Oil family business located in Gloucester’s Fort. We see that they have diversified into the home oil business because of the declining fishing industry (John Nicastro’s interview from last week). http://youtu.be/SLqoQtNwmLc

Today John manages the dock and the In/Out board illustrates the past and present. His sons (Paul on the left and Sal on his right) run the home oil business. Paul describes their current situation in the video (last frame).

More music to benefit Gloucester’s UU Church Meetinghouse

Thanks, to everyone who came out to support Gloucester’s UU Church Meetinghouse Restoration last Saturday — and especially to 3rian King, Chelsea Berry, Renee Dupuis, Joe Cardoza, Brendan Burns, Meff & Dennis Monagle, who delivered a stellar performance that had the crowd swaying and singing to “All You Need Is Love!”

Next Saturday we change it up a bit and ROCK THE MEETINGHOUSE with Martha’s Vineyard-based, six-piece ENTRAIN, featuring founder/drummer Tom Major and lead singer/guitar wiz Brian Alex, for their only North Shore concert this spring.  As Entrain’s conga/djembe/trombonist Sam Holmstock says, “The most important thing that we try to do with our music is bring everybody together in the spirit of peace, love, fun and a ton of drums!”  Nothing more to say, really.  Just watch the video (get tickets here

TOD Development Potential

I ran across this link to a MAPC study, browsing news for work. TOD or Transportation Oriented Developments are getting a lot of talk today and places like Melrose are already trying to capitalize on the idea. I thought to post the following link to the study  on GMG as the concept could be looked into for Gloucester and perhaps Beverly. The effort usually takes a zoning overlay district that allows mixed use developments and areas with strong connections to rail and bus systems. Not sure if anyone’s thinking along these lines already.

Follow this link to the MAPC (Metropolitan Area Planning Council) study of stations within the Metro area showing potential for development and capacity. Melrose has now proposed zoning changes in it’s Tremont/Essex Street Commuter Rail Corridor. Some of these include relaxed height restrictions allowing 4 stories, up from 2 stories, greater density, and broadened scope of allowed uses.  Great ideas for growth going forward with incorporation of public transportation as a foundation. http://bit.ly/1pWsmKY . IMHO!

Here it is! The Pedroia Bobblehead

If you haven’t heard or seen by now, this is what everyone has been clawing for. It was free at the Sox game yesterday. Serious collectors are going crazy for these suckers. I have to admit, it’s way more detailed and heavy than I expected. This is clearly not your average toy bobblehead.

Nice details with the dirty jersey, dirty hat, and golden cleats!

Run to Home Base- I Need your Help!

On Saturday, July 19th, I will be participating in the 5th annual Run to Home Base to help returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families heal the “invisible wounds” of war.  This is my first 9k! So far I can run a 5k, but I am willing to put in the dedication to train and run for our troops! I hope you can help me out in my fundraising journey by donating. Any amount counts. My goal is to raise $750 by July 15th, but I would love to surpass that with your help!

Please click on my link to Donate: http://www.runtohomebase.org/2014RunToHomeBase/AliciaPensarosa

Let’s Support our Troops who have risked their lives, health and families for us!

Home Base operates one of the only private sector clinics in the nation dedicated to helping veterans and their families recover from post traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury through clinical care, education and research. They have provided additional support for thousands of veterans and family members through free recreational activities, work in public schools, and on college campuses.  Home Base has trained more than 11,000 clinicians nationwide to recognize and treat the invisible wounds in their medical practices, and the program is engaged in national research to improve the treatment and understanding of PTS and TBI.

If you have any training suggestions, I would love to hear about them. Leave them in the comments.

Thank you for your support!

Many local businesses and organizations are expanding their hours –or coming in on their day off– just to engender a special welcome.

Let’s remember to thank and support our local establishments! Residents can shop, tour, and eat & drink, too…

Quick facts:

Vessel Name: Veendam

When to open: by 10AM – 4PM (The first passengers will be coming ashore at around 9;30 and reaching downtown Gloucester by about 10AM.)

Passenger count: 2500

*If you have any brochures to display for a welcome table, please drop them off to the Chamber by Friday and they will be sure to get them to Cruiseport for Sunday morning.

Some of the special tours and programs being offered:

City Hall will be open from 10AM – 4PM for self-guided tours featuring the WPA-era murals and Committee for the Arts exhibition signage. Extra special bonus: there will be guided tours of the tower (passengers can see their vessel and an indelible view) thanks to the Restoration Commission!

Open Door Empty Bowl Dinner is right around the corner

Hey Joey,

The Open Door Empty Bowl Dinner is right around the corner on Thursday, May 8, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Cruiseport Gloucester. Can you let GMG readers know that they are invited to join us for an evening of food and hospitality?

The meal is simple—soup, bread and a cookie. Guests can choose and keep a soup bowl handcrafted for this community event. The bowl goes home as an unspoken reminder that somewhere someone’s bowl is empty.

Extra parking is available at Harbor Beach with complimentary trolley service to and from the event site. Tickets available at the door. $15 for adults and $10 for children under ten.

Empty Bowl events are held nationally to generate awareness concerning hunger and to raise money for local hunger-relief programs. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Summer Meals and Mobile Market programs.

Attached are a couple of photos of Silent Auction bowls that will be available that night!
