dave sag rl 4.3.2014

Let’s welcome back the Ipswich Twins! That’s Mr. Orville Giddings and his neighbor and lawn-mowing customer, Mr. Marque Earley. Mr. G. ,superior gootarist and Pepsodent® spokesperson, is ready to charm you  with his raucous blues and plaintive self-inflicted toons. A great songwriter! And Marque, of course, is the finest living local saxophonist who ever lived, locally. Whooping it up on drums will be out favorite kooky cackler, Mr. Steevee Chaggaris. I’ll be on base, once again. Spring has sprung, so get out there and do the do!

Italian Easter Bunny Egg Cookies

I ask you, do we want to be known as Gloucester, TRASHachusetts? I don’t!

The weather is finally nicer so let’s all begin to tackle our litter problem by first cleaning up around our own properties. Then maybe get radical and start a Clean City Initiative by clearing up some place that is not your own property. Just think of the inspiration you could be for others; leading by example!

I walk around town every day and our woods, marshes, etc are inundated with trash. There is plenty of work to be done. So before the grass grows and covers our litter for yet another year ,let us all be brave Gloucester Citizens by taking personal responsibility for our collective environment. If everyone pitched in just a little, we could have the clean City we deserve in no time.

Many hands really do make light work.

Thanks,

Janet Rice

Editors note:  Janet just last week after visiting EJ at the Hobbit Studio above Sailor Stan’s and walking back to my truck I walked past this very spot where you took photos and there was a guy right there at low tide picking up trash.  Where the wind pushes in certain directions sometimes it all collects in spots even if it had been cleaned the day before.

Super Fun Anthropologie Behind-the Scenes Making of the Monarch Store Windows Submitted By Our GMG FOB Mary McLoud Tucker!

Thank you Mary for sharing; this video from Anthropologie is so much fun!!!

Metamorphosis: The Making of Our
Earth Day Windows

It is awe-inspiring to think that the monarch butterfly, a species so small and humble, lays claim to one of nature’s greatest spectacles. And yet, their annual migration is considered just that—an age-old phenomenon of epic proportions and, as recent decades have shown, increasing peril due to their declining population. That’s why this Earth Day, we are paying tribute to the monarchs in our store windows, now home to swarms of handmade orange-and-black butterflies. Here’s a behind-the-scenes peek at their making.

Vickie wants me to choose between Hendrix & The Beatles, but I won’t do it!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock this year, you already know that 2014 is the 5oth anniversary of The Beatles’ appearance on Ed Sullivan.  I begged my parents to let me stay up and watch the show — and they agreed.  (Kids went to bed earlier in those days.)

http://youtu.be/Ds3R0Zxh26g

It was a thrill!  Most everybody on my block was already a Beatles fan and the next day, we were utterly devoted.  We all started saving up for the next record.  Being the 5oth anniversary of what CBS billed as “The Night That Changed America”, you’ve also probably seen lots of Beatles tribute bands playing around.  Next Friday (April 25), Top area musicians come together (yes, pun intended) to help raise money for Gloucester’s UU Meetinghouse as The Number Nines — but this is no tribute band.  Rather, it’s three top Gloucester singer/songwriters: 3rian King, Chelsea Berry and Renée Dupuis, joined by Boston‐based multi‐instrumentalist Meff and guitarist Brendan Burns with Gloucester’s favorite rhythm section: Dennis Monagle and Joe Cardoza.  They’ll perform their own originals plus fresh takes on The Beatles, like this soulful interpretation of “I Want To Hold Your Hand” featuring Chelsea Berry on vocals:

So, we can all agree that The Beatles are the greatest rock band ever, right?  “Not so fast,” quips Vickie.  “What about Jimi Hendrix?”
“What about him?” I reply.
“You’re always saying he’s the greatest rock guitar player, who ever lived.”
“Well, of course he is.” [Here’s one of my Hendrix favorites]

http://youtu.be/iqvU5CVHHmk

“So how can The Beatles be the best rock band ever?”
“Oh come on.  I can’t choose between The Beatles and Hendrix!”

So the next night, April 26, our friend Jon Butcher is bringing his powerful new show, The Jon Butcher Axis: Celebrating the Music of Jimi Hendrix to the Larcom Theatre for their Boston area debut.  Check out Jon’s version of another one of my favorite Hendrix tunes:

http://youtu.be/G7AuzX0T9GY

I’ll be at both.  You can be too.  You don’t have to choose.
