Updated:A Note About Running Races On Cape Ann
Yesterday we decided to use one of our Dinner Dealer coupons and grab lunch before the City Hall Fundraiser. It was 12:30 and we decided upon Cape Ann Brewing. Walked in and it was packed to the gills with runners who had just finished the Twin Lights Half Marathon. We waited a bit as people continued to file into the joint from the race, runners and people who had gone to support runners in their half marathon.
We ended up leaving and heading to Lat 43 which was packed as well. Nice to see these places doing well.
There is nice economic impact from these races.
Update 5/8 from Phil Scannell:
Hey Joe, I also noticed the town was a buzz last Sunday we stopped into Captain Carlos and it was hopping at 2 pm then we walked down to Latitudes and that was jammed and I got to thinking –I went by stagefort and couldn’t see any visible damage on the grounds and I hope they have not forced the fall bike race off with all the complaining about the damaged grass.
Best Phil

Singer vs. Crowd
The deck is open. We eat outside because Cape Ann Brew Pub is full inside. People had come to hear Chelsea Berry and her friends and to support Boston Strong.
After dinner, there’s room to stand inside to see the music. It’s a relaxed, fun, lively atmosphere. But it’s loud. People are talking over the music. You’ve been there right? The band turns up. The crowd talks louder. It begins to feel like a contest. Most musicians hate this. They’d rather be playing to a listening crowd.
Chelsea sings her song, “Blues House”, which is about this very problem. From the back, it’s hard to hear her over the crowd. But it’s too loud in there to carry on a conversation either. I’ve always puzzled about this singer vs. crowd phenomenon.
Then something magical happens. Chelsea sings her signature a cappella song, “King of Rome” and does something unexpected. She leaves the mic. Chelsea’s powerful voice is still heard over the din. And the sheer power of her presence and performance begins to quiet the crowd. Finally all you can hear is Chelsea’s soaring song about Charlie and his racing pigeon accompanied by the clanging of pots and pans in the kitchen as if it were an off-stage percussion section.
Singer vs. crowd. Singer wins. But so does the crowd. Live music takes you to a place you simply cannot experience any other way.
BTW: This is the 100th anniversary of the 1001 mile race from Rome to England that Charlie Hudson’s racing pigeon, The King of Rome, won in 1913.

It’s a busy one, so let’s get goin’!
This Thursday at the Rhumbline I’m proud to present the one and only Chris “Stovall” Brown. Born of Titans, raised by wolves and lowered by hydraulics, Mr. CB is up there on the top of the blues world, having toured with the likes of James Cotton or is Jerry Portnoy? Who can remember? He sings, he plays killer guitarrh, he’s a blast! I love working with him! Gush, gush gush. Now add the cracklings of that sartorially-challenged eggbeater, Mr. Steevee Chaggaris, and myself, and see what our special musically enhanced interrogation techniques can do for you!
Click to the link to visit Chris Stovall Brown’s website http://users.rcn.com/drhepcat/CHRIS_WEBSITE/Home.html
And Saturday nite, I’ll be at Captain Carlo’s flailing away with the HooDoo Revelator Band, playing all your top forty or fifty favorite blues tunes at extremely high volume. I’m gonna wear earplugs, you should, too. But seriously, it’ll be fun to dance to.
Now Sunday, from 6 to 9, for something completely different, I’ll be at Glenn’s Cool Bar in Nbpt. with the marvelous vocallist Ms. Mari Martin. It’s Mother’s Day! Come celebrate. I get tired of repeating myself, but there’s a whole other world over that bridge, and you oughta czech it out. It’s an awesome restaurant, just ran into Glenn hisself at Nordstrom Rack, looking for size 14’s.
Party time @ Minglewood@Lat tonight…Starting at 6:00pm ending 12:00 mid…Now that’s a party!

Local Eagle Scout Zachary Schultz Takes Part In Revitalization Of Veterans Lot In Beechbrook Cemetery- Rededication Ceremony May 11th and You’re Invited
Sarah Schultz writes-
Hi Joey,
My son Zachary Schultz is a newly awarded Eagle Scout here in Gloucester with BSA Troop 112. For his service project, he and over 40 volunteers revitalized the veterans lot at Beechbrook Cemetery for the Office of Veterans Services and the community of those who they serve. As an extension of Zach’s project, he and the Office of Veterans Services will be rededicating the Veterans Lot. His hopes are for people to see how Boy Scout Troop 112 and many volunteers cared for the lot. We thought you could post something on Good Morning Gloucester to aid this endeavor and we would love for you to join us. The ceremony will be on Saturday, May 11 at 11am at the Beechbrook Cemetery Veterans Lot off of Essex Ave..
Please find the attached letter sent by Zach to local Gloucester dignitaries and Veterans Post Commanders and their members to apprise them of the upcoming ceremony. This will be a public ceremony and we would like to extend the invitation so the families and friends of veterans who are interred at this site may come to the occasion.
There were many volunteers and Gloucester officials who assisted Zachary to achieve such a job well done for the veterans and the Veteran Services office that serves this community. Zachary’s goal was achieved with the highest standards and has been awarded the Boy Scout Eagle Scout in part due to this project. He would like to publically thank the community and volunteers for all that they did to ease his task with an outstanding result for the community.
My name is Zachary Schultz, the newest Eagle Scout of Gloucester Boy Scout Troop 112. My Eagle Scout service project, a community service project that any Eagle candidate must complete to hone skills in leadership and service, was to restore the Veteran’s lot at Beechbrook Cemetery. Through initial clean up assistance, the DPW was an invaluable help that made my job easier and I hope I did the same for them in return. I organized over 40 volunteers to lift and reset 50+ grave markers, install flag holders for the small flags that fly from Memorial Day to Veterans Day, installed a flag pole light and donated a sign for the entrance of the site. Also for this project I created a revised catalogue of the coordinates to better locate a grave site which Ms. Lucia Amero at the Veterans Services Office will be able to update as necessary. After almost 100 personal hours and a group total of approximately 500 hours, the project was completed to we brought this site to its honorable status.
On Saturday, May 11th at 11:00 a.m. at the Beechbrook Cemetery (off of Essex Ave.) I will be conducting a Rededication Ceremony with the support of the Veterans Service Office. The ceremony is a public ceremony to honor the site by inviting City officials and dignitaries, the Veteran Commanders and post members, the Gloucester community who have family and friends interred there and the volunteers that worked so diligently aiding in this effort. I would like people to see that the efforts were made with respect and honor. I hope you can plan to attend this service.
