Irving Johnson and the Yankee

Irving Johnson (1905-1991) was one of the most famous sailors of his century. He circumnavigated the world seven times, in two sailing vessels, both named Yankee. He later commanded a US Navy warship, the USS Sumner during WWII. There's so much to learn about this great man. See Wikipedia and get a copy of his film, Around Cape Horn.

  1. The Yankee & the Johnson family were heroes to me growing up, National Geographic showed the world their adventures,
I sailed aboard Yankee for a 5 day trip to Maine when I was a teenager..
The saga continues till its demise via Capt, Mike Burk running on to a reef in the Carib ion, where is likely a tourist attraction. So Sad.

  2. As a young man living in East Gloucester and working with Tommy Hodge sailing with Jerry Hill’s
operation on Rocky Neck, I had the opportunity to meet Captain Irving Johnson and met several
well known persons including Sterling Hayden. I did an Oral history video with Stanley Dulong
who was a ships rigger who received advanced notification from Mr. Johnson to do rigging work
    when he arrives in Gloucester…
