Gallery owner EJ Khan hosted the Bloody Mary contest, delivering eight rounds of interesting Bloody Marys to the five judges. Of course we only sipped each one for evaluation, except for the one we really liked!Judges carefully rated each cocktail based on taste, presentation, originality, and garnish. When the points were added up, we had winners for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. All contestants did a great job. Judges from L to R: James Eves, Karen Ristuben, Kathy Downer, and Ed Collard.

Agreed James, and we also got to sit, drink Bloodys x 8, wash it down with Corona. It was great judging with you and the other Honorable Judges. Fair and equitable mixology justice has been served.
I talked to visitors who were walking Rocky Neck from Virgina & Texas (big year for Texas visitors to Gloucester) and they were so pleasently stunned to see the fun and friendship. They walked the gallery, chatted up a bit and left with a grin and a piece of Banana bread. Where else but a GMG event! Thank you EJ for hosting.
So, who “won”??? I know, I know, in today’s day ‘n age, everybody is a winner….
I’m sure the judges had a great time but……
Was the winner a pre-mix or something made from scratch? What sort of condiments were used to entice the judging panel?

Hi Robin! We had three winners, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. They earned it. Five other contestants did a great job, but no cigar for them, at this time anyway. As judges, we are pre-qualified and take our duty seriously. We don’t know who made the Bloodys or what their secret recipe was. Now we know who won, but what we don’t know is what their base tomato mix was. It’s all about the taste, so who cares about origin of the mix? I say: “If it tastes great, drink it, if not, dump it overboard.” We’re a merry band of pirates here on Cape Ann, but we’re dead serious about Bloody Marys, and we do have a lot of fun. Presentation and garnish were part of the evaluation. Use huge shrimp and lobster meat, don’t make it too spicy, and you Robin could be a winner!
Yes they have Dave. It’s now Miller/Coors, and you’ll be shocked at many of the beers you’ve known and loved that are now under their corporate umbrella. Think Foster’s and lord knows how many others. Oh Jeeeze!
Fred, The old school days relived for sure-that corona came across I believe in a 1957 Chevy trunk at the border? Bennie Toki drank the pints of petri around lanes cove by Duley Street or beyond the old cemetery behind Roberts Oil and Coal then – he got from Kips package store across from Fred Sarri’s grocery store now a grinder sandwich shop. Fred used to make seagulls out of old drift wood. Bennie and his drinking buddies were quite some characters then for sure. But every Sunday he got all dressed up for service at the sacred heart church their on the hill close to plum cove.
Sacred Heart in Bay View. I used to go “down the Cove” when it was rough, but never was intimidated by the grizzled guys hanging out on their drinking turf. It’s different now, more open, but I still remember those days. You know your history. Me, I learned it. I’m a newcomer, or “wash-ashore” as they say on Cape Cod. 33 years and I’ve got a few more ahead to enjoy this Heaven on Earth called Cape Ann.
Thanks Fred (Brewster Bay)? My time was lanesville 1957 to June 1968 moved west then…Step dad bought a bus – cross country in a big highway bus Cape Cod RTA buses that was coverted to home on wheels. The bus was early 60’s or late fifty’s model broke down three times on the road cross country in W/VA mount peat 50, Colorado Springs, Albuquerque NM. Were headed to AZ but ended up staying NM trip across USA was a wee bit hard and parts forget it. The bus had the air intake scoop rear and had the cape route from Cape Cod RTA buses buzzards bay, woodshole, manually moved the marquee with crank for destinations…etc 🙂
Well, if you guys are done going down Memory Lane, lol, I’d still love to know the “Best of Three” winners ingredients as I do like to “partake,” on occasion, and you can’t beat a good Bloody Mary.
E.J., they look delicious! When is your last Rocky Neck “Mug UP?” I’m not much of a morning person, but I bet that would wake me up.
