My voting station was at the parish center at Our Lady of Good Voyage. There was a small line, but it moved quickly.
It’s a pretty big ballot, so it doesn’t really fit in the folder provided for voting privacy, but I don’t think we need to worry…
Thanks to all the folks who work at the polls to keep the democratic machine running clean and fair!
No matter who wins these elections, there will be a lot of upset people afterwards. Let’s hope we can all be understanding and respectful of each other, even if we strongly disagree… NPR’s “This American Life” has an interesting podcast on this topic this week. Although I am pretty frank about my principles in public (I hope), I avoid talking too much in public about for whom I vote. I don’t want that to get in the way of my ministry, or to be interpreted as my endorsing specific candidates on behalf of the Church. I have to be able to talk to people of all political persuasions, and some people just can’t see past political differences. Fortunately, my friends include people representing a wide range of opinions. I hope it stays that way.

Never in my life have I been so undecided on the lesser of two evils. The felt tip marker point went back and forth from Obama to Romney at least 5 times before checking off my final decision.
I wonder how many are just like me, undecided right up til the final second in the booth and I wonder how close of a race compared to every national poll which basically had them split the results will be.
In any case, get out there, VOTE!

World origami days! And, Christmas tree origami?
Here’s an origami lemur reminding me that we are already half-way through this year’s World Origami Days!
I saw a photo of this cute little lemur model on the internet, and the folder was kind enough to send me the diagrams. I aim to post an origami photo every day of the remaining “World Origami Days”. Let’s see if I can keep that resolution…
By the way, all the decorations on my own Christmas tree (with one or two exceptions) are made of origami. Would anyone be interested in an origami Christmas tree ornament workshop? I’m thinking about organizing one. I could teach a variety of designs, like an angel, a Santa, a non-representational geometric ornament, and maybe some ideas for origami garlands for the tree too. For dates, I’m thinking either late November or early December.
Or, here’s an idea for you. Every year, OrigamiUSA decorates a tree in the American Museum of Natural History in New York City with origami, following some theme. What would be really cool would be a (modestly sized) Christmas tree decorated with nautically-themed origami in some public (indoor) location in Gloucester. Whales, fish, lobsters, boats, lighthouses,… That would be a fun project, if enough people were interested in helping. Am I crazy?

Colorado Singer/songwriter Megan Burtt will be taping a show today at Cape Ann TV that will air on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes sometime this month. Megan is visiting her friend, and Berklee classmate, Chelsea Berry for a few days as part of her Northeast tour. After her excellent show on Saturday at Old Sloop, I asked Megan if she’d be in the area long enough to tape a show and she agreed! So we scrambled our crew.
If you’d like to be in the audience, come to the Cape Ann TV Studio in Blackburn Park (directions here) at 1pm. Ring the doorbell and say, I’m here for Local Music Seen. Don’t worry about what you look like, you won’t be on camera. Your presence allows the performers to connect with a live audience, which gives the show an added dimension. And your clapping, cheering, whistling, etc. will be captured on the soundtrack.
If that’s not enough, you’ll also get to hear a brand-new song from Allen Estes that I haven’t even heard yet (we missed his show at Rhumbline on Sunday because we can’t be in two places at once). Here’s a taste of what you can expect from Megan:

Fisk Documentary almost done
About the Project:
"The Opus 139 Project: To Hear the Music" is a documentary entering its final editing stage that celebrates great music, great craftsmanship, and the unique workplace ethic at C.B. Fisk, Inc. The completed film will tell the interwoven stories of founder Charles Brenton Fisk, his workshop in action, and the enterprise of creating, installing, and voicing a single new pipe organ, in this case Opus 139, commissioned by the late beloved Peter Gomes, for his magnificent Memorial Church at Harvard University.
It is a rare opportunity to be able to document and experience the intricate design process, attention to detail, and stunning craftsmanship involved in the construction of this "King of Instruments." In the last act, the soaring glory of the new organ at Harvard, Opus 139, will be heard at its inaugural concert. The Opus 139 Project is a film about the evolution of a single pipe organ, 3 years in the making, and needs to raise $15,000 in 31 days to complete production. Timeline for finishing is May 2013.
This is, has been, and will be a labor of love, rather than a for-profit project.
