Gloucester to Host Wind Energy “Blade Signing” Ceremony

New turbines are expected to save the City millions in energy costs

(Gloucester, MA) – The City of Gloucester will host a “blade signing” ceremony on Friday, November 16 at 10 a.m. The event marks the installation of two wind turbines located on the Gloucester Engineering site, at 11 Dory Road inside Blackburn Industrial Park. The turbines are being built as part of a 25-year agreement with Equity Industrial Turbines, which is expected to save the City of Gloucester a minimum of $11 million dollars over the life of the contract.

“Gloucester residents will benefit from our abundant supply of wind power” said Mayor Caroyln A Kirk, “For the first time, green energy will be used to provide power to city buildings including seven schools, public safety buildings, and water and sewer treatment plants. This change will result in substantial fiscal benefits for our city and make Gloucester one of the greenest communities in Massachusetts.”

Mayor Kirk will be joined at the event by the Gloucester City Council, the chairman of the Gloucester Planning Board, the Director of the Green Communities Division of the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources, the Executive Director of the Energy Consumers Alliance of New England and Mass Energy, the Mass. Municipal Association, and representatives from Gloucester Engineering, Equity Industrial Turbines, and the local residents. All who attend will be invited to sign their name on the turbine’s blades.

The City anticipates the energy savings realized will be used to support a new joint public safety building and improvements to local schools.

About the City of Gloucester

America’s oldest seaport, the City of Gloucester is known throughout the world as an authentic, working waterfront community, a place of spectacular natural beauty, and home to a diverse population of about 30,000 residents. An important center for the fishing industry, Gloucester also is proud of its rich art heritage as one of the premier art colonies in the United States. The city also is a destination for thousands of visitors who visit the harbor and its beaches during the summertime. In recent years, Gloucester has been diversifying its traditional maritime economy, adding leading small research institutions such as the UMass Amherst Large Pelagics Research Laboratory and the Ocean Alliance to the array of state and federal agencies working in the city, and with investments in robotics and new product development from the fishery.

I figure Smokin Jim’s is closed for the season so I’d say The Farm Bar and Grill for the authentic BBQ.

A little help on the Pies guys.  Leave your comment on this post!

Gauthier Gallery Grand Opening

Last Sunday, I stopped by the Gauthier Gallery grand opening on Main Street.

I had visited (and posted about) the Gauthier Gallery before, so it was nice to see how things have been coming together.  Most of the artists involved were there:

There is a great selection of art there right now! Here are some sample shots:

It’s not just paintings; there are elaborately decorated boxes…

Painted wooden trunks…

… and colorful scarfs:

Elizabeth Gauthier has started a new activity at her gallery: painting parties!  From her website:

The-Painting-Party offers an upbeat evening of painting and socializing for both the artistic and the not so artistically inclined. You will be guided through step by step instructions by an accomplished art instructor. It’s fun and totally stress free.

And by the end of the night you will be amazed at the work of art that YOU created. You will go home with a painting that is uniquely yours – and perhaps a new found talent you’ll want to nurture!

She has a schedule on her website.

Salt Lake City is getting some North Shore Ice Crystals…From Our Len Burgess!!!!

Len writes-

Back in the beginning of the year an architectural designer, Catherine Widgery purchased a lot of my macro photos of ice crystals that she found on my Flickr site, ‘Photoholic1’. She used them, combined with lightning graphics, into large etched-glass windows for a transit station platform, elevator enclosure and stairs in Salt Lake City, Utah which is now under construction. Here’s a few photos of the work being done. -Len Burgess

Check out some of the great projects that Catherine has done and is designing for future contracts.

The Immanence of

God in the Tropics

Tales of soccer, death, hot water, lost love, and the presence of God in Africa, Mexico, and the coast of New England

“The stories in George Rosen’s collection take place in unlikely sites under unsure conditions; they treat with respect odd people — a man somewhere between a bum and a crazy, another who’s afraid of words, a reticent couple who practice reckless abandon. The unadorned sentences often reach a conclusion whose truth makes you catch your breath. This unpretentious book is the work of a master.”

Megan Burtt on Local Music Seen

That’s what award-winning, Denver-based singer / songwriter Megan Burtt, says on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes, which premieres tomorrow night at 6:30pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.

Megan was kind enough to stop in and tape a show last week after having played to a sold out crowd at the Old Sloop Coffeehouse.  Her writing is straight from her heart and gut. Her songs take you away and when you return you’re a different person. You don’t want to miss this show!

Those of you familiar with Local Music Seen know that Allen starts every show with a song, and for this one, he premiered a brand new song that doesn’t even have a title.  (Megan told me her idea for a name, but we won’t reveal that until after the show airs.)  Here’s a video of that song.  Leave a comment using the link below to share any ideas you have for a name (See more videos by Allen Estes here)

You can see Allen at Jalapenos tonight sitting in with KBMG for Dan King, who’s in Seattle.

More excellent music all week long.  See the complete live music Schedule here.
