Schooner Adventure introduces….
Skippy Finds Adventure
This beautifully illustrated children’s book tells the story of Schooner Adventure’s mascot of 15 years, Skippy, a wharf dog, who followed Adventure’s engineer aboard in 1936 and stayed for the rest of her life. Find out what life was like on Gloucester’s last dory fishing schooner through Skippy’s eyes. Meet members of the crew—Skippy’s family—and see what their daily work was like.
When Schooner Adventure retired from fishing in 1953, she was the last American dory fishing schooner on the Atlantic. A way of life died as this grueling method of fishing was replaced with more modern net fishing equipment, which required fewer crewmen onboard. Adventure spent the next 30 years taking passengers on windjamming trips out of Maine. In 1988, Captain Jim Sharp donated her to the people of Gloucester, returning her to her original home port. Today, a complete restoration of Adventure is nearing completion, bringing her back to her original fishing configuration. Now she serves as a living memorial to Gloucester’s master mariners, teaching new generations about Gloucester’s fishing history.
Skippy Finds Adventure was created under the direction of Adventure’s education coordinator, Beth Welin, and was generously funded by the Dusky Foundation. The creative team for Skippy Finds Adventure includes Gloucester residents, artist Rusty Kinnunen and writer Peter Cherry, as well as editor Ann Droppers, another North Shore resident. The book will be used in the “Skippy’s Adventure Program” geared for grades PK – 2 and joins Adventure’s other education programs (the Traveling Dory Program, the Working Waterfront Walking Tour, and the History Sharing Program) in helping bring to life the story of Gloucester’s fishermen and fishing industries over the ages.
Skippy Finds Adventure books and Skippy stuffed animals will be available at Schooner Adventure’s Holiday Tea at the Inn Magnolia (Dec 2. 1:30-4pm), in City Hall during the Middle Street Walk and soon at local stores! Adventure items may also be purchased through Schooner Adventure’s office (Fitz Henry Lane House on Harbor Loop). The November 13, 2012 CITY COUNCIL vote was UNANIMOUS to endorse the establishment of the proposed Downtown Gloucester Cultural District.
The DGCD coordinating group thanks the Councilors, our City Clerk, and the more than 30 partners and stakeholders who sent in letters of support and spoke at the hearing. Have a peek at a few: Cape Ann Museum , the Gloucester Public Schools , and Gorton’s.
Next steps: Send in the application and support materials and wait for word, guidance, and a visit from the Massachusetts Cultural Council!

Reuben Garrett Lucius “Rube” Goldberg (July 4, 1883 – December 7, 1970) was an American cartoonist, sculptor, author, engineer and inventor.
He is best known for a series of popular cartoons depicting complex gadgets that perform simple tasks in indirect, convoluted ways. These devices, now known as Rube Goldberg machines, are similar to those drawn by W. Heath Robinson in the UK and Storm P in Denmark.
Looking through old photos came across a picture of Rick in the first grade and one of me. Rick, so cute, in New Jersey and I look like my hair got caught in a socket. I think my mother curled my hair with rags. That must have been a Somerville, MA thing.

Back on June 1st The New England Aquarium declared the Calico Lobster as one in 30 Million which of course we made found of in this post-
we also had a poll in that post and took some good natured shots at The New England Aquarium’s obvious attempt to make the calico lobster they had seem like a much bigger deal than it was-

A couple of weeks ago the New England Aquarium took possession of a calico lobster and was touting it through their marketing efforts as a one in 30 million lobster.
Either the numbers they are using are off or we here at the dock are the luckiest lobster dealers on the planet and should be stocking up on megabucks tickets because we get 2-5 a year.

We told you there’d be last minute updates and guess what, there are. Henri Smith, Joe Wilkins, Gary Shane and others have agreed to join Will Hunt‘s production of Cape Ann Rocks for the Rockaways tomorrow from 4-midnight at The Hive.
OK, we’ve gotten some questions about this benefit. People asking, Who are the Rockaways? It’s not who; it’s where. The Rockaways are a section of New York that was just creamed by Superstorm Sandy. People who live there are a long way from getting back to normal and need help (see articles here and here). One of my heroes, physicist Richard Feynman, was born in Far Rockaway. Among other discoveries, Feynman figured out what caused the Challenger Space Shuttle to crash. Check out this video for a great story of how he reluctantly agreed to join the Commission investigating the Challenger disaster and what happened next:
