Aloha

Rosa ‘Aloha’

The French have a beautiful sounding word for a repeat flowering rose and, without doubt, the most remontant rose that we grow is ‘Aloha.’ Embowering our front porch pillars, she welcomes with her fresh-hued beauty. ‘Aloha’ begins the season in a great flush, followed by a brief rest, and then continues non-stop, typically through November, and in one recent, relatively mild autumn, into December. With one bud yet to open, I imagine this year will be another where I can claim she bloomed into December. I like her so very much that I planted a second and then third and they are all three sited where we can enjoy her great gifts daily.

‘Aloha’ Blooming in Mid-Novmeber

‘Aloha’s’ buds are full and shapely, and colored carmine rose with vermilion undertones, giving us a preview of nuanced shades to come. She unfurls to form large, quartered, and subtly two-toned blossoms, initially opening in shades of clear rose-pink with a deeper carmine pink on the reverse, or underside of the petals. The blossoms are long lasting, fading to a lovely shade of  pale coral pink. And the petals fall loosely, never becoming balled clumps. With luxuriously long stems and shiny emerald foliage, ‘Aloha’ also makes a divine cut flower.

Oh, and I can’t believe I am several paragraphs in and haven’t yet mentioned her fragrance. She not only welcomes with her great beauty, but also with her potent and dreamy scent. I have often heard ‘Aloha’ described as having a green apple fragrance, but find that description only partially accurate; the scent is really much more sophisticated, with notes not only of fresh Granny Smith apple, but also the warm sensuous undertones of the old Damask and Bourbon roses.

Peace & Democracy in Pakistan

What are the prospects and why does it matter?

Relations between the United States and Pakistan are at an all-time low, following a series of incidents involving U.S. and NATO forces either inside Pakistan or along its border with Afghanistan, even as Pakistan itself has been convulsed by a rash of antigovernment bombings and assassinations and as the Obama administration prepares to draw down U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Can Pakistan move towards peace, democracy and stability under such conditions, and why should this matter to Americans?

Beena Sarwar is a leading Pakistani journalist, artist and democracy, human rights and peace advocate. An initiator of the Pakistani Campaign for Democracy and a former Harvard Nieman Fellow, she is currently working with the Jang Group in Pakistan, and she maintains a political blog titled Journeys to Democracy (http://beenasarwar.wordpress.com].

Sarwar has worked for newspapers in Karachi and Lahore and was the founding editor of the Pakistan weekly "News on Sunday."  She has also written extensively for the InterPress News Service, and has made several film and television documentaries. She has degrees in Art and Literature from Brown University (1986) and in Television Documentary from London University (2001). Sarwar was a Nieman Foundation Fellow at Harvard in 2006 and a Fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy (Harvard Kennedy School) in 2007.

Bill Hubbard Gloucester Paintings Now Online

Bill Hubbard has been chosen to have a showing of 14 of his paintings in the Main Gallery of Copperflame Galleries from December 1 through December 31st, 2011. Beginning on Dec. 1st. you may view his artwork at http://copperflame.com/maingallery-15.php. Six other artists will be showing their work in adjacent galleries at Copper Flame.
Hubbard shares Indian River Artiosts Studio with his wife and partner, Theresa A. Kraemer.  He specializes in marine art, seascapes and boats as well as fishing and fish.
He is a member of the Strawbridge Art League in Melbourne, Florida, where he lives. Hubbard studied in Gloucester, Massachusetts, with Margaret Taylor and Robert Benham. Anton Stetzko, the watercolorist, greatly stimulated his urge to create art while he was living on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, from 2002 to 2006.
He is currently working in the mixed media of acrylic, pen and ink. He is from a fishing family, so his painting leans heavily toward seascapes, nautical and tall ship subjects. He paints realistic historical subjects like famous Gloucester fishing schooners, Maine trading schooners and Indian River wind and steam driven boats and ships. He looks at his marine paintings as telling a story – sometimes obvious and sometimes subtle..
