Postmodernist poet Charles Olson is one of the major literary figures of our time. His Gloucester-based epic Maximus Poems was named among the most important poems of the 20th century by NPR, and his writings have influenced poets all over the world.
During the week of
October 3-10 Gloucester will celebrate the 100th birthday of Olson, its adopted son. Headlining the week of readings, workshops, and exhibitions will be poets Diane di Prima and Ed Sanders.
Both Sanders and di Prima were friends of Olson’s. While Sanders went on to
lead the Fugs, and carry the postmodern message into the hippy sphere, di Prima was a strong link to the “Beatnik Glory” (to borrow Sanders’ phrase) of Kerouac, Ginsberg and their fellow writers in the 1950s and 1960s.
And, while both are links to America’s storied literary past, they are also vibrant, practicing artists. Diane di Prima is poet laureate of San Francisco, a city of poets, and Sanders is the recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” grant for his wide-ranging literary and community work.
