I love paintings that get you to think about what the real story is. Winslow Homer’s “The Fog Warning” (MFA in Boston) I like to check out but the story is short. It’s the old “Oh shit I am so screwed my home ship is heading south and the fog is rolling in and there is no way I can pull to catch up.” Probably something that ran through Howard Blackburn’s mind as he realized he and his mate were alone. (That he then just turned to shore which was a bit far away is of course another story altogether.)
But that painting lower left in this shot tells a longer story. From the shadow of the fisherman the time is early afternoon but he doesn’t like what the sailor who leaned over told him. “Yeah, you rowed to the wrong boat. That be your schooner heading off in full sail. Since you were such a jerk in kindergarten I am going to enjoy watching you row into the sunset. Later.”
Or he could be saying, “That’s your boat sailing away but we be having a big party onboard as we are full to the gunwales with fish and heading in. Come on board for some brownies and we have a first mate from New York who is making up this drink he calls a “martini”. It’s wicked pissah.”

Paul, you have a hell of an imagination and a great way of telling stories. Thanks for sharing!
