Crazy Cairns Part I

Joey posted Halibut2 round rock balancing and a youtube of rock balancer Bill Dan (who looks like he does his work in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge). I noticed a dry mortar technique that Dan was using and had an ah ha moment. I’ve been going for square sturdy construction and height but with a little dry pebble added one might go crazy.

My first try:

Considering I just had my afternoon coffee and had the jitters it was relatively easy to get the balance.

These next three are more my style up until now:

All I have to do now is use Dan’s other technique of putting a piece of bologna on the top so I can film a homie being a house wrecker.

This is Crazy Cairns Part I since I have only just begun. Wait until I try it without coffee. Arches, flying buttresses, and the blind scales of justice are coming.

  1. Paul, I saw your Cairns Site this morning. Only one was standing. Very nice place, but you will find better rocks if you would go left closer to the cliffs. There you can build something which may last longer.
The original purpose of cairns was to guide U on the way back or guide others. I use it to leave a message.
    Good luck!

  2. With 30 knot wind gusts I wasn’t expecting any to be up the next morning. My one round one was all that was left.

I usually leave one cairn just shore side of “elephant balls” which is just 30 yards closer to the cliff side from where I built them. I have a name for a few of the prominent rocks there since we swim right there. “Handrail rock” goes into the water right even with elephant balls. Easy way to get in both high and low.

You’l recognize elephant balls. Two very large gray erratics.

    1. Six years later I am a little better on the geology. Elephant Balls are not glacial erratics. They are left from a basalt dike that has washed away. There are several basalt dikes that cross through Andrews Point. They are a darker smooth grey.
