My View of Life on the Dock
City Councilor Paul McGeary forwards-
Fifth graders from the West Parish School took a field trip aboard the Thomas E. Lannon on Tuesday, Oct. 2. All third- and fifth-graders in the Gloucester Schools get the experience, which is funded in part by the City’s Community Development Block Grant Program and in part by each schools PTO. In addition to a two-hour cruise, the youngsters also spend part of their day visiting the Cape Ann Museum to learn about our city’s cultural history.
In photo below, Tom Ellis, skipper of the Lannon, instructs the youngsters in proper shipboard behavior prior to leaving the dock.
Yesterday, we told you about local artists at Topsfield Fair and suggested that you go see them (see post here).
This weekend you’ve got another opportunity to see one of our local favorites, Satch Kerans, at the Boston Local Food Festival on Sunday. Satch is on The River Plug and Play Stage at 1:30pm (see complete festival entertainment schedule here). If you’ve never seen Satch, check out this video from the Songwriters in the Round series.
http://youtu.be/mnPkTB9X1YQ
Before and after Satch’s set, you can catch the start and finish of the big, Boston version of Gloucester’s Seafood Throwdown (yup, these are the same people who produce the one at the Farmers Market) — and your boy, Peter Van Ness, will emcee once again.
Now for some evening excitement featuring 30 artists this weekend and your last chance to experience music aboard the Lannon in 2012 (see this post if you’re not sure what we’re talking about). See the complete list of live music in Gloucester and Cape Ann here.
Here’s a list I grabbed off the Chamber’s great website which lists each Schooner participating in the 2012 Gloucester Schooner Races. To Connect The Dots For You and bang the point home this is what you need to do-
Click on the highlighted link under or or above each schooner to go to the website and contact the Schooner to reserve your spot aboard. Gloucester harbor is going to be jamming back and forth with all these schooners and to be on the water it will be magical!
YOU WILL NOT REGRET BOOKING YOUR SPOT ON ONE OF THESE BOATS AND BEING PART OF THE ACTION!
I’m convinced 99% of our population outside of the schoonerheads don’t even realize that they can get aboard and race. The costs to go out for a sail is not even a rounding error on the cost of owning a boat for a year.
What, you’re still reading this? You should be on telephone with Kay Ellis or the people at The Ardelle office booking your reservation for this weekend. Hurry up will ya?

OK We’re Doing The Final Cigar and Rum Cruise On The Thomas Lannon September 4th. Two Cigars from Old Cuban Cigar Co, Rum Drinks From Bobby Ryan’s Private Collection and Ryan and wood Distillery and a cruise on the Lannon. Last one sold out in 4 hours. I’m sending this out to my inner circle before posting it on the blog so if you wanna go, call Kay at The Lannon office now- 978-281-6634
Al Bezanson and I have been beating the drum for you to make your reservation for a sail aboard one of the many fine Schooners coming to Gloucester for Schooner Festival but I have to put my two cents in here as far as my Number 1 Pick.
Obvi- The Thomas E Lannon.
Tom Ellis and Kay and Heath and their crew are hands down the friendliest funnest people ever to sail a schooner. Tom Ellis being my hero and all doing something he loves to do and getting paid to do it in such grand fashion.
So anyway call now to book with the hometown team- The Lannon or The Ardelle. Once the Ardelle sends me their Schooner Festival schedule I’ll post it as well.
This from Kay-
The Schooner Festival is our favorite weekend in Gloucester. Lots of schooners will be here this year and that always makes for interesting sails. The Lannon will be sailing a lot over those few days, so check out our schedule and join us if you can. It is always fun to see these other vessels in our home port.
Friday, August 31st, we are sailing from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., 3:00-5:00 p.m., 5:30-7:30 and offer a sail in the moonlight with dessert from 8:30-10:00 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 1st we sail at 12:30-2:30 p.m., and 3:00-5:00 p.m. Then we offer a chowda and lobsta roll sunset dinner sail from 5:30-7:30 and a fireworks sail with dessert from 8:00-9:45 ish.
Sunday, Sept. 2nd is Schooner Race Day. Come onboard and join the crew for the day as we lead the Parade of Sail and then race in the Mayor’s Race for the Cameron Cup. Great fun!
Monday, Sept. 3rd, we sail from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., 2:00-4:00 p.m. and offer a sunset Celtic Music sail from 4:30-7:00.
We never seem to know exactly when the participating vessels will be arriving and departing, but we will do our best to sail near them for you. Bring your camera!
Give our office a call at 978 281-6634 to make your reservations. We hope to see you onboard.
Kay Ellis writes-
Hi Joey,
We are a having an exciting sail on Monday night from 6-8 and were wondering if you could spread the word for us. I have attached a flier for the event.
The Lannon and the Ardelle have been sailing around the harbor together all summer. On Monday night we are raising the ante and having a race.
Mention that you heard about the race on GMG when you call and you and everyone with you will receive $5 off your ticket price.
It was awesome, the people, the cigars, the crew, the rum, Gloucester Harbor, The Sunset. 100% Good Vibes and A Whole Lot Of Love. Kay and I are working on the date for the next one. The first sold out in 6 hours so when I send out the notice get on it. if you want to be put on the reminder list email me at goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com and we will send you a pre-announcement before they go on sale to the general public.
Here’s a slide show from Kim Smith with many more pics to come-
click below for the video and below that is the full slide show
If you come to Gloucester or if you’ve lived in Gloucester and you haven’t experienced a sail on the most beautiful ship in Gloucester harbor, The Thomas E. Lannon then I really feel sorry for you.
It’s beyond just bouncing along on a pretty boat, it’s the warmth and friendly hospitality of the Ellis family, Kay, Tom and Heath. It’s experiencing Gloucester harbor without the blaring of a diesel engine or the exhaust fumes. It’s the peace, it’s the sunset, it is the friendships forged.
I’m telling you right now you just gotta go. You have friends coming in from out of town? Take them on the Lannon, you’ll love it,and they will thank you.
more pictures and video coming
Now Just last week I was telling you that the number one thing I would tell anyone that they had to do on a 70 degree plus day in G Town was to go for a sail on the Lannon, and lo and behold BAM! A groupon for half off. These don’t last long and usually they shut it down half way through the day because they only release so many to groupon. Don’t be a dope, get yours for 45% off now!
Here was what I wrote on April 22,2012-

It’s almost that time of year when all the really cool stuff around happens. At the Top of my list for anyone coming into town on a nice day is a sail aboard the Thomas E Lannon. Bottom line if a tourist had one thing to do and only one thing I’d tell them on a nice day to take a cruise aboard what I consider to be the most beautiful ship in the harbor.
Not only is the ship beautiful, but you also get to experience the warm genuine hospitality of some of the finest representatives our city has to offer The Ellis family. Captain Tom, his wife and sons are just the nicest most sincere, fun loving people you’d ever want to meet.
There is hospitality that is, you know, kinda forced, which in my book is fine because in the absence of the warm fuzzy true genuine friendliness I’ll take a forced friendliness over bad or rude service any day. But from the minute you enter the booking office and you meet Kay you realize there is nothing phony about the Schooner Lannon’s operation. They just happen to be really good at what they do, they love it and they provide a great experience genuinely and naturally- the best of all worlds!
This is not to say there aren’t a bunch of other very cool things to do around town like whale watches, deep sea fishing, Visiting The cape Ann Museum or The Heritage Center, coffee at one of our great coffee shops, breakfast at our many awesome breakfast joints, ect, ect. I’m just saying, you give me a sunny 70 degree day and I have folks in from out of town, A guaranteed great time is to be had aboard The Thomas E Lannon.
Here are some early morning photos I took of her on the blocks at rose’s Marine where she is being sanded down and getting freshened up for the fun season ahead!
We will be having our GMG Folly Cove Rum and Old Cuban Cigar Co cruise this summer, as soon as Kay and I lock down the dates I’ll let y’all know.

Yep The Lannon now has it’s own webcam with a view of the docks at the Gloucester House and The Star of The Show, The Thomas E. Lannon.
Click below and find the Thomas E Lannon Webcam among the 23 webcams on www.gloucesterwebcam.com Have you bookmarked the site yet so you can go to it when there is something interesting going on in town?
This will be perfect for judging the line at Fiesta to get into The Glo Ho and monitor the comings and goings of the working ships in Harbor Cove. A GREAT GREAT VIEW!
Special thanks To Tim Blakeley from www.gloucesterbytes who has been installing the webcams at a reduced service rate because he believes in the project.
23 cams up with more to come from The Schooner Adventure at The East Gloucester Marine Railways, Cape Ann Marina Cam and Mile Marker 1 Cams!
Filmed With My Cheapo $79 Kodak Playsport Zx3 and using the Kayalu nClamp.
Some points about taking video-
The more steady you can hold your camera, the more pleasing the resulting video will be. One way to accomplish this is holding your camera very steady. You need to be very conscious of framing your shot properly and keeping the camera steady. the much easier way is to use a tripod, or mount. Using a mount or tripod there is no camera shake and your results will look immeasurably better than if you try to hand hold the camera.
Obviously carrying a huge tripod around can be cumbersome and you all know my feelings on being able to keep your camera gear on you to be able to capture the shots as they happen. So many times a tripod is not going to be the answer.
The manfrotto modopocket which screws right into the universal camera mount and folds flush with the bottom of my camera is my number one camera accessory that I feel can help any photographer achieve much better results, especially with poor light (with good light photography is a snap, you just point and shoot and you don’t have to worry about camera shake because the time the lens will be open is so much shorter).
But for this application I used the kayalu nClamp with the toughbar extension. Literally I screwed the Kodak Playsport Zx3 onto the Toughbar and clamped it onto a bolt that was attached to the mast, framed the shot and pressed record. In this way I could sit back and enjoy the company on the boat and we got a nice video capturing the scene.

Once again I can’t extend enough thanks to Paul Giacalone from Old Cuban Cigar Company, Bobby Ryan of Ryan and Woods distillers and of course The Ellis’ and their crew aboard Gloucester’s most beautiful ship, The Thomas E Lannon.
I never want to miss one of these cigar and rum cruises for the rest of my life. the setting aboard the Lannon with the friendliest crew and my hero Captain Tom Ellis, the company, the spirits and of course the cigars- just like the first one, I didn’t want this night to end.
Anyone who took pictures be sure to send them in and I’ll post ‘em for you (better yet upload them to a Flickr set and I’ll run your pics as a slideshow)
