Click the picture for just one page from Abby’s Gloucester Fishing 101 book which she produced for seARTS Partner With an Artist Program.  there will be many panels on eth walls here at our Dock- Captain Joe and Sons 95 East Main St Saturday from 10-2PM

Click on the picture below to see it full sized and learn some interesting facts for yourself.  I for one was astounded at the breakdown of how many of each different type of commercial fishing boats there were.  42% of the fleet are lobster boats, I had no idea, but this is just one of the factoids that Abby has broken down.  I think if you click on the picture you will get a sense of how easy she made it all to understand even though there is a ton of data in her book and in her exhibit, ANYONE could easily understand it.

-and this is all stuff that anyone that really takes pride in living in Gloucester or loves the fishing industry should know about.

Abby Ytzen/Captain Joe and Sons seARTS Partner With An Artist Exhibit May 21st

Blown away!  When you can get Pete Mondello, a fisherman for over 50 years excited about a Gloucester fishing industry exhibit you know you’ve done something special.

The way Abby has broken down such an incredible amount of fisheries statistics into an easily digestible visual/artistic/educational/fun presentation with everything you need to know about where Gloucester’s fishing industry has been with data and visuals bringing you right up to the present is nothing short of astounding.

This is an uncomplicated 101 guidebook to Gloucester’s fishing industry which has distilled all the data and will give any person a good basic understanding of what is going on around the Gloucester waterfront.  The way it is broken down there is info for people 7 years old to 70 and it is all incredibly interesting.  Every person who considers themselves a real “Gloucesterite” NEEDS to come see this exhibit.

seARTS Announces Partner with an Artist Award Winners

    image

Mark Teiwes and our company Captain Joe and Sons collaborated two years ago for the seARTS Partner with an Artist program.  It was fun and created a lot of positive energy.

The 2011 collaborations were announced recently.  read the press release from seARTS below-

GLOUCESTER, Mass. – The Society for the Encouragement of the Arts’ (seARTS) is pleased to announce the selection of five creative artist/business partnerships. Each artist will receive a $1,500 grant to complete and publicly present new work.
Partner With an Artist (PWA), seARTS signature artist grant program, made possible by grants from the Bruce J. Anderson and the Andrew Bayness Funds of the Boston Foundation, invites artists to submit proposals for innovative collaborations with local businesses. PWA offers a unique opportunity for artists and businesses to explore creative relationships and develop innovative projects.
In the spring seARTS (date and location to be announced) will hold a public discussion where artists and partners will present the concept, development and execution of their projects. During the week of May 9 – 14 the five projects will be presented for the public to view and experience at several locations. Details will be available in April.
Partner With an Artist 2011 Grantees
Elizabeth Ann Harty and The Rockport Council on Aging

Harty’s mixed media work – using photo transfers, calligraphy, texture and collage – will reflect the history and future of the newly renovated historic Rockport Community House in connection with its key role in the community and its Cape Ann location.

Susan Erony and The Gloucester Writers Center with additional partner(s)
Visual artist Erony’s project, A Few Chosen Words: 100 Fragments of Text by Gloucester Writers, will explore the relationship between word and image through and with the words of Gloucester writers on paper mache bricks. The project will be on exhibit and Erony will present a lecture on visual art that incorporates literature.
Kristin Miller and Cape Ann Community Cinema with Robert Newton

Cellist Kristin Miller and writer/filmmaker Robert Newton will create a 15-minute multi-media presentation using film, original music and narration tracing the history of the WPA Murals and their importance to Gloucester.

John Taguiri and The Gloucester Marine Railways Corporation
Using a large film format camera and 35mm digital imaging public artist Taguiri will photograph the Captains, crew and vessels that haul out of the GMRC this spring. Images will be on display at GMRC and negatives will be housed at the Library of Congress Archives.
    Abby Ytzen with community partners

Graphic artist Ytzen’s project Discover Gloucester is an integrated education series – map, interactive website, posters and t-shirts – for residents and visitors that presents different various aspects of Gloucester such as fishing, arts, and history.

Partner With an Artist is managed by Sarah Slifer, who successfully created and managed the Gloucester New Arts Festival as a seARTS partner. According to Slifer, "PWA is an exciting opportunity for artists to think and work in creative partnership with businesses, bringing art out of the studio and into the public forum in new ways."

The Society for the Encouragement of the Arts is a coalition of individual artists, art organizations, cultural and civic groups, and businesses working to improve the economic base for the arts on Cape Ann, and to promote Cape Ann’s thriving arts community and rich arts heritage.  The Society for the Encouragement of the Arts has been a recipient of the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Adams Arts Fund for Cultural Economic Development.

seARTS WANTS YOU! To Vote For Gloucester Video With Jackie Ganim DeFalco and Kristine Fisher

Kristine Fisher and Jackie Ganim DeFalco stop by to talk all about seARTS and all of the exciting programs happening including the get the vote out effort to inform people about the American Style Magazine voting for Gloucester.

    Kristine writes-

As a community we have a unique opportunity to select Gloucester as a Top 25 Arts Destination in the US……and we need your votes to make it happen!

Please join seARTS’ ( The Society for the Encouragement of the Arts) grass roots campaign to help elevate Gloucester’s visibility as a top U.S. arts destination.   Deadline for voting is March 5th !  Please vote multiple times!  Link below!

One of our interests is to help drive up the cultural/creative economy for all of Cape Ann.  We have succeeded in getting Gloucester nominated as a Top 25 Art Destination in AmericanStyle’s survey.  AmericanStyle is a highly respected national publication focusing on art and travel, and is an excellent resource for artists and art enthusiasts. It publishes the top art events across the country, highlighting select destinations and profiling individual artists.

The readership of AmericanStyle represents the cultural/creative economy that our community is hoping to attract and grow.  Securing Gloucester on their list as one of America’s Top 25 Arts Destinations will elevate Cape Ann on the national stage.  We have over 2,000 working artists on Cape Ann and a thriving community that celebrates the arts of all disciplines.  After all, our Rocky Neck is the country’s oldest continuous working art colony in the U.S.!

Because AmericanStyle’s survey is “city based,” we chose Gloucester, as it has the largest population.  seARTS has been sending weekly e-blasts to our membership requesting folks to vote by March 5, 2011. It is only through votes that Gloucester will secure a place on the list as a Top 25 Destination in AmericanStyle’s spring/summer issue to come out in May 2011.  We are hopeful that you will be comfortable voting “early and often” between now and March 5th.  Here is a link to the voting form.  http://www.americanstyle.com/current-issue/

Please scroll down to the “Small Cities” list and cast your vote for Gloucester!

seARTS Partner with an Artist Program to Award $7,500
    Connecting artists and local businesses

GLOUCESTER,  Mass. – The Society for the Encouragement of the Arts’ (seARTS) is pleased to announce its signature Partner with an Artist (PWA) program for 2010-2011. The PWA "Call to Artists" invites artists to submit proposals for innovative collaborations with local businesses.  A panel of jurors will review proposals and award five $1,500 grants. The application deadline is January 31, 2011. An Information Session on PWA will be held Thursday, December 16 from 6:30 – 8 pm at the Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center, 23 Harbor Loop, Gloucester.

The program is managed by Sarah Slifer, who successfully created and ran the Gloucester New Arts Festival as a seARTS partner. According to Slifer, "PWA is an exciting opportunity for artists to think and work in creative partnership with businesses, bringing art out of the studio and into the public forum in new ways."

Among the most recognizable PWA programs was the October 2008 "Literary Gloucester" themed PWA series which involved installations at Captain Joe’s; Fitz Henry Lane monument; the Building Center, InterShell, Virgilio’s, and Dogtown Bookstore. Cape Ann businesses interested in working with artists on collaborative projects are encouraged to attend the December 16, PWA Information Session.

PWA 2010-2011 is supported with funding from the Bruce J. Anderson and the Andrew Bayness Funds of the The Boston Foundation. In prior years, PWA received support from seARTS Mass Cultural Council Adams Grant.

In May 2011, in partnership with Cape Ann Art Haven, seARTS invited nationally recognized guest artist and educator Jerry Beck, to lead a multi-media sculpture workshop with students to create constructions that explore Gloucester’s early history. The project was inspired by images of Native Americans, found in the Gloucester City Hall WPA murals.

The current "PWA Call to Artists" focuses on the following:

Creating opportunities for artists: In a time of recession it is even more meaningful that grants are available to artists to recognize that the arts play an important role in the economic life of our communities. In this way, PWA is inspired by the New Deal’s Works Progress Administration (WPA) support of artists and encouragement of artwork that connects to the community at large.

Partnership with a business:  This is an opportunity for artists and businesses to explore a creative relationship. We are looking to fund innovative projects that explore arts/business collaborations and embrace the partnership as integral to the work of art to be created. A business might provide goods, services, or space for a project.

Grants will be announced in early February, 2011. Completed projects will be on display beginning May in conjunction with a community forum with the artists.

For information or a copy of the Program guidelines, please contact info@seARTS.org.   There is no fee for seARTS members to apply.  Non-members may join seARTS or pay a $25 application fee.

seARTS Wearable Arts Show Enters 4th Year & Expands
Adds new fiber artists and national outwear designer

GLOUCESTER, Mass. – The seARTS Wearable Arts group presents its fourth annual show to coincide with Gloucester’s historic Middle Street Walk. The Show and Sale begins with a Friday night reception and continues throughout the day December 11th. The Wearable Arts Show provides a unique opportunity to showcase local jewelers, fiber artists, and designers – while at the same time benefits the Sawyer Free Library and the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts (seARTS). The show is unique as it is run by the artists who each contribute to making it a warm and welcoming event. The venue itself, the historic wing of the library, provides an intimate setting for art lovers and holiday shoppers to mingle with the artists, try on “wearable art” and enjoy music, food, and community spirit. The seARTS show continues to grow as the only event on the North Shore dedicated to wearable art.

Returning jewelry artists include Meredith Anderson, Lee Cunningham, Jacqueline-Ganim-DeFalco, Susan Kenna, Candy Marshall, Rebecca Williams, Beth Williams, Jan Weinshanker & Judy Wright. Returning fiber artists are Margaret Derby, Camilla MacFadyen and Nina Lapchyk who works out of Winchester. They will be joined by three new textile artists, Beverly Gillett and Jenny Beauchamp, who have been working in different surface design techniques and Marlene Cann who works in a wide variety of fabrics.

For the first time, the seARTS group welcomes the designer Maralyce Ferree represented by Mike Cianci. Maralyce Ferree recently moved its shop to Amesbury and was invited to join the show to add its colorful outwear to complement the collections of jewelry, scarves, and shawls. Maralyce Ferree has provided innovative design since 1984. Starting with one fleece jacket for a friend, to a collection of fashionable outerwear sold throughout the United States and parts of Canada. To add to the overall spirit of the event, Maralyce Ferree will offer special pricing for the show. Collectively, the group will offer something for every taste and price point – from lush velvet scarves, to intricately beaded jewelry made from hand-made glass beads, precious gems, felt, exotic beads, and semi-precious stones. And more fabulous gift items include – sachets, table “wear,” sea glass hair accessories; elegant purses and belts, charming children’s clothes; and seaweed block prints on scarves and T-shirts. The show is a feast for the eyes for the range of creativity and colors on display. The Friday evening reception will engage all the senses as each artist brings a favorite appetizer and Carol McIntyre graces the show with harp music.

The 14 artists along with local businesses have also donated a piece of their work or a gift certificate to a corollary raffle fundraiser to benefit the Library. Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco, one of the organizers comments, “The Library has been a tremendous partner, each year working more closely with us to expand the show and share the treasures of the Saunder’s House with the community. All the artists are enthusiastic about returning to this wonderful place.”

All donations will be displayed in the glass case across from the front desk of the library beginning mid-November. Tickets $2 or 3 for $5 are available from any participating artist or at the Library desk during the weeks leading up to the show. The Wearable Arts show is organized and supported by the artist members of seARTS. 15% of all sales will be donated to seARTS
