Poll Do You Care If There Is An NBA Season?

Personally I haven’t paid any attention to the NBA since Bird, McHale and the Chief. Love me some football and am actually happier that I get more football with my sports news.
Do you care if there’s an NBA Season?

Two Entries for The Downtown Gloucester Block Party Poster Contest Helen Lind and Linda Cordner- The Vote Ends Tomorrow Morning At 5AM

H.A. Lind-

Hi Joey:
I could not resist your challenge of a new design for the Block Party poster
for three (very serious) reasons:
• I miss Glosta soooo much.
• I lived/worked in 3 apartments in Kirk Noyes wonderful 92 Main Street building downtown, and
• I just miss everything Gloucester, especially downtown!!!
Yes – I am passionate about downtown!
You will notice my design reflects these interests!
Many Thanks to you and all of your contributors for helping me to maintain my sanity –
in spite of our 3000 miles of separation!!!
Best regards,
H. A. Lind

Trash The Dress Photo Shoot On Good Harbor Beach and a Quick Poll about Bangs

A photographer recently did a photo shoot on good Harbor Beach with a woman in a wedding dress.

Click the first picture to go check out their blog

Do bangs come and go?  I’m kinda curious because much like the mullet I thought that bangs were almost retro nowadays.  Unless I’m just out of touch.  Maybe I just haven’t paid attention and they’ve made a comeback.  like you see some of those rockabilly chicks that have the exaggerated bangs and that’s kinda cool, but I’m wondering if anyone intentionally still does the bang thing.

I’ll have to pay more attention when I venture away from the dock this morning.  Maybe I’ll do a quick mental survey at the coffee shop.  It could be that they never really went away I guess.  Poll time?

Browser Wars- Who Ya Got? Poll

image

After basically swearing off Internet Explorer about three or four years ago I’ve been a pretty happy Firefox user but my interest in Google’s chrome has been piquing.

When we got stuck in Florida on our trip back from St Lucia last week we were lucky enough to get some time to hang out with my parents in Naples.  In addition to affording me time with my parents I got to log onto a computer for the first time in 9 days- my mom’s.  My mother will click any picture sent in an email by one of her friends that has a cute dancing bunny or heart on it (without any regard for the spyware or viruses she is downloading to her computer with that click).  She also has a fondness for toolbars it seems.

On a 17 inch laptop she may have had 3 inches of visible screen real estate after you account for the 8 or so toolbars that she has running in her Internet Explorer browser.  Let’s see, I think there was Yahoo toolbar, AOL toolbar, Google toolbar, something called Smilebox, and two or three coupon alert toolbars that I could remember.

Clearly I needed to download a new browser for her.  All this crap she had downloaded brought her laptop to a crawl.  I could almost hear it crying out for help, saying “Please, help me tell me you’re not going to add more crap to my already splitting at the seams workload”

So I downloaded Safari for her.  I’m not really sure why I picked Safari but it probably had to do with the fact that I was using Safari for the past 8 days on my iPad and it’s a pretty clean interface.  So once I got Safari on her laptop and imported a bunch of her favorite bookmarks to her toolbar and gave her a quick lesson on how to add bookmarks she was off and running.  The new browser started up about twenty times faster, there was about 80% more screen real estate due to the lack of those layers of toolbars stacked from the top of her screen to three quarters of the way down.   It will work well for her.

So I got home and the Mrs’ laptop has Internet Explorer as the default browser as well.  The Mrs to her credit is pretty good about detecting what she should and shouldn’t click on.  (Anyone have any general rules we could pass on to folks as to what you use for criteria for what you will and won’t click on?)  But I’m just not a fan of Internet Explorer.  It seems so sluggish and automatically hyperlinks things I don’t want hyperlinked, the security settings slow me way down and it doesn’t offer me single right click access to image url addresses and other geeky stuff that 97% of you probably needn’t worry yourselves about but to a person that really uses these features can drive nuts.

So I decided to check out Chrome on her laptop.  It was a quick download and I really like the minimalist and clean layout.  I haven’t used it enough to really know if it could replace Firefox on my desktop at work but it really simplifies many steps such as bookmarking and I love how doesn’t use up a lot of your screen with toolbars.  It also seems super speedy.

So this leads me to ask my viewership- Which web browser do you use and why?  Please leave a comment and let me know where you place your browser love?

2010 Lobster Trap Tree Poll -Who Ya Got?

It’s that time of year.  The Gloucester Lobster Trap Tree Has Been Constructed and Adorned With Buoys Hand Painted With Love and Special Messages Of Peace, Joy and Hope By The Children Of Gloucester.  And then there are the sterile generic boring trees erected by prisoners of the Maine criminal system who have been incarcerated for unspeakable crimes against the elderly and sick and destitute.

A Challenge and a Poll

With so much stuff going on all around us this beautiful time of year  I got to thinking about my youth and even though my mom made sure I was very active that I had a feeling like there was nothing to do all the time.  As I’ve gotten older I realize that that is just plain nonsense and figure that the feeling that there’s nothing to do is just a frame of mind that we can sink into by being closed minded and not taking initiative for our own happiness.

If you read these pages you can’t help but be completely impressed by the sheer number of cool things happening all around us on Cape Ann- things are happening that in many cases don’t cost anything or cost very little to participate in.

So where do you personally fall?   Do you try to participate in all the stuff you can?  Do you not have the time to participate?  Do you feel like there’s nothing to do around here?

There are sailing programs, there are fairs, there are Block parties, there is Dory Rowing, there are museums that you may or may not have visited in forever, there are always of course the beaches, there is volunteering, there are free concerts (harbor loop Thursday nights) , on Rocky Neck there is Night’s on The Neck, there is the Farmer’s market, ect, ect, ect…..

So the challenge is this-

When you read these pages or the community calender in the local newspapers don’t just casually skim over all the cool free event listings that people take the time to organize and promote.  Pick a few events out, get off your ass and go participate.

I promise you won’t regret it.  Maybe all you need is a little shaking up and a palm whack to the forehead to let it sink in.  So Let Me Reiterate!

PICK A FEW EVENTS OUT

Poll- How Many Of You Make GMG Your First Click of The Morning?

It was great to see and meet so many friends of GMG along the parade route. Thanks for all the encouragement and kind words.
Lots of people have been telling me lately that Good Morning Gloucester has become part of their morning ritual and the first place they check online when they fire up their computers.
I wonder for how many folks that is true so I guess this is as good a place for a poll as any.

The Wedding Food Nazi Poll

Is it only Italian men that solely rate a wedding by how good the food is?

It always amazes me how much stock some people put into how good or bad the food is at a wedding.  How the food tastes is not going to make or break me having a good time at a wedding (although it is always nice to have something to eat if you are going to be in one place for an extended period of time).

Not wanting to alter the results of this poll any more than the opening statements we will further discuss this once we have people start to vote.

Poll- Do You Have A Tattoo Or Have You Considered Getting One?

I’ve beat myself up for years considering getting a tattoo.  For years what held me back was the lack of something that I really really wanted to put on myself permanently.  Now that years have gone by and I’ve been in the lobster business for so long I’ve been wanting to get a lobster tattoo.

I have the exact design that I want and I know who I would go to -Molly at Witch City Ink but a couple of things have prevented me from doing so.  One, I don’t know exactly where I’d put it.  You see I have skinny forearms, and not only are they skinny but they are somewhat hairy.  Gross, right?  Who would want to look at a tattoo with hair growing out of it?

Anyway the design that I want features a traditional lobster from the overhead perspective.  The one with the claws right out in front of it in a straight line.  then I would like a scroll banner with Madeline written on one above the lobster and Eloise on  a scroll banner below.

Well enough about me.  Do you have a tattoo?  Have you ever had any desire to get one but chickened out?  If you did get one what would it be?
