Community Garden Launched at Burnham’s Field Photos and Captions By John McElhenny
John McElhenny writes-
Joey,
The Burnham’s Field Community Garden has been officially launched! On Saturday, 25 volunteers laid down geotextile landscaping fabric, built 4’ x 8’ garden boxes, filled wheelbarrows full of compost and raked fine-looking garden plots that’d make a Midwestern farmer proud. Twenty individual garden plots are planned, along with a low fence to protect the garden from critters. Thanks go out to the volunteer gardeners for their energy and awesomeness, the Building Center for donating materials, J. Harrison of The Food Project for his direction, Steve Winslow and the City’s Community Development Department for their support, and Donna Ardizzoni and the One Hour at a Time Gang for sprucing up Burnham’s Field on Saturday morning before the gardeners arrived.

A truck dumps steaming compost for the community garden at Burnham’s Field. It took 25 volunteers about 2 ½ hours to shovel the compost into 4 x 8’ frames for individual garden plots. Twenty plots are planned.
Becky Thompson spreads compost in one of the 4 x 8-foot boxes specially built for the Burnham’s Field community garden. Thompson, who lives right by the field, is one of several Gorton’s employees who’ve volunteered to work in the garden.
Gardeners Barb Collins (left) and Marie Rodriguez fill a wheelbarrow with compost. Rodriguez is part of a group of teachers from St. Ann School who plan to use their garden plot to teach children about growing fresh flowers and vegetables.
Tim Burnham from the Building Center delivers wood to the garden site. The Building Center generously donated materials for the construction of the community garden.
Gardener Gina Curcuru spreads compost onto the geotextile fabric beneath the garden. Curcuru is one of the many gardeners who live close to Burnham’s Field and can walk to their plots.
Thanks John for getting us the pictures and the rest of the volunteers and folks who donated time, money and energy to make it happen! You all should be very proud!
Fred Buck Comes Through With A Couple Of Photos Of Our Grandfather Captain Joe’s Boat The Benjamin C
When Mary Ann Anderson asked last week on these pages if anyone had any photos of her grandfather’s boat The Rosemarie, Fred Buck who works in The Photo department at The Cape Ann Historical Museum sent us a picture to post for her.
Fred wrote in the comment section letting folks know that he would help locate other photos of the Gloucester fleet so I asked if there were any of our Grandfather Captain Joe’s boat The Benjamin C. Within hours Fred responded with not one but two.
There’s more than a few lessons here.
- Read the comment sections and participate in the GMG comment section under each post, You never know what golden nuggets get uncovered in there and it’s a part of what makes the GMG community special.
- Cape Ann Historical Museum On Pleasant Street has a treasure trove of local artifacts, photos and information.
- We have some excellent people who read GMG with a wide range of local interests and love to help. Example in this case- Fred Buck from The Cape Ann Museum.
Fred emailed me two photos, one of which was owned by the museum, it’s a 1951 photo taken by Philip Reisman.
Here’s the history of this boat from our Company’s website- Captain Joe and Son’s History
On the site there are pictures of the boat being launched at The Story shipyard in Essex and many more photos of my Grandfather and his crew-

Thanks Fred!
Chickity Check It! Magnolia Photos and History Through The Decades From Tim Moran

Hi Joey,
Thank you for your GMG web site and what you do to keep us former residents “in the loop”.
My name is Thomas (Tim) Moran. While I currently live in Dallas , TX , my roots go deep into Gloucester , more specifically, into Magnolia.
My two sisters (Marcia and Alison) and I spent every summer between the mid forties and the late fifties (1944 – 1958 for me) visiting our grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. W.H. Ringer, at the head of the beach on Shore Road in Magnolia.
My grandfather, W.H. Ringer, was a principal of GHS when it was downtown, long before it moved to its present location by "the cut".
As I was looking at some pictures of the Fisherman’s Memorial the other day, I remembered that my mother, Beth Ringer Moran, at age 99, is probably one of the few still alive who, at age 13, was at the statue’s dedication in 1925? She also remembers walking across the cut bridge from their home on Kent Circle to the high school every day in high heels and skirts, which is what ‘girls’ wore to school then. She says it was very cold in the winter!
I wonder if anyone knows anybody else who was also there and is still living. That might be a good question for your web site.
My sisters and I have returned to Magnolia many times through the past 50 years and will return again, hopefully within the next few years.
I invite you to peruse a web page that I put together after sister Marcia, my wife, daughter, and I last visited in the fall of 2004. Tim Moran’s Magnolia MA History

Seal at Lighthouse Beach Photos From Elinor Teele
My family and I discovered this visitor taking a bath at Lighthouse Beach.
Naturally we didn’t think it polite to disturb, so we headed for home, only to discover it had finished performing its Sunday ablutions and was moving on to dinner.
Sushi, we presume.

(We kept well away – pictures are taken with long lens)

Captains Courageous Festival Photos
Hi Joey – I thought you might like to post this photo of 10 year old 4th grader Jack Kelly who volunteered to read from Captains Courageous at Cape Ann Art Haven on Saturday, March 5 during the Captains Courageous Festival. Note Jack’s multi-colored fingers – he’d just finished making fish prints with many other kids. They had a great time.
Also, photos of Jimmy Tarantino reading at GMHC are below.
