Gloucester’s Bob Quinn, who has been going to Good Harbor for the past 80 years, tours the dunes of Good Harbor Beach and comments on the poundin’ it took this winter.
Here is a clip from the half –hour show that airs all  week on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.
Show airs: Monday (tonight) at 6:30 p.m.; Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.; Wednesday at 9:30 p.m.; Thursday at 8:30 p.m.; Friday at 12:30 p.m. and Saturday at 5:00 p.m. Â See Channel Listings for more Cape Ann TV Shows.
Even though there’s still snow on the ground, it’s not too early to be thinking about swimming at Good Harbor. Â So, to get you in the mood, here’s a very up-beat song Allen Estes wrote last Summer and performed on Local Music Seen.
You know the season is upon us when there are 26 live shows over the weekend and most of the summer-only venues aren’t even open yet. Â (If you’re a summer business, stop what ever you’re doing, take Paul & RD’s advice and let him know when you open: see here).
And just in case you’ve missed my incessant plugs for taking kids to live music, here we go again … shows start as early as 7pm tonight and tomorrow.  Then on Sunday it’s 8 different start-times in 8 1/2 hours:  11am, 2pm, 3, 5, 5:30, 6, 7 and 7:30.  See the complete weekend live music schedule here.
One of this weekend’s shows features Noise publisher/editor T Max, who’s got a new CD out soon. Â And on that CD, is a new song Clickity Clack, which was inspired by a spontaneous burst of creativity from over a year ago, when we filmed his walk through Gloucester’s music scene (see the video series here). Â Now he’s turned it into a clever romantic tragedy with an edge (see lyrics and chords here).
Here’s the original spontaneous creative burst from February 2012
Here’s the new version a year later performed by T Max with Bird Mancini

Bob Hastings sent me an email last night announcing the first act to be booked for this year’s Gloucester Blues Festival. Â His name is Anthony Gomes and he’s a smokin’ guitar player as you can see by the video below.
Here’s the thing: He’s not even the headliner … Whew! Â This will be a spectacular Blues Festival.
You can’t get tickets yet, but you can save the date, which is August 10 at Stage Fort Park.  Remember, you heard it here on GMG first and you can trust GMG to let you know the minute tickets  go on sale.  In case you’re one of the unfortunates who missed last year’s Blues Fest,  see some videos here.
No, you don’t want to miss this year, do you?

Just got the word from DB that Dan King will be joining the boys at Jalapenos tonight before he flies back to the west coast.  Here’s a nice video, albeit a bit shaky, shot  by Ned Nugent, of the boys at Jalapenos last May — one of my favorite Dan King songs.
If you saw jazz guitar master Larry Coryell back in November 2010 when he played a benefit for seARTS, you already know what I’m talking about. Â At the risk of dating myself (this is Peter, not Vickie) I was mesmerized when I saw him on tour with Gary Burton back in the late sixties/early 70s (I was in high school).
Larry Coryell is a master, plain and simple.  And you’ve got a chance to see him with his Power Trio (Larry Coryell on guitar, Larry Gray on bass & Paul Wertico on drums) this Friday at Shalin Liu (get tickets here). You might think of jazz guitar as beautiful, lyrical and highly improvisational, if a little on the quiet side.  Here’s a video of Larry’s Power Trio showing off Paul Wertico on drums — spectacular!  Anything but quiet.
Here’s what it says on the Rockport Music website:
Known as the pioneer guitarist merging jazz, rock, free-form improvisations, and Eastern influences, Larry Coryell brings his eclectic style back to the Shalin Liu Performance Center this March. Described by critic Whitney Balliett as “the most innovative and original guitarist since Charlie Christian,” Coryell’s career spans four decades, over 60 albums (dozens more as a sideman), and performances with some of music’s heavy-weights like Eric Clapton, John Scofield, Elvin Jones, and Chick Corea, to name a few. Also a consummate composer, he tells Rockport Music, “I write music because I can’t help it. I think perhaps I want to complement all the great compositions already out there…Wayne Shorter and Sonny Rollins come to mind, and of course, Monk!” Coryell’s personal philosophy of music has kept his playing fresh and exciting, and makes each of his personal appearances a special event.
“…Coryell played poetically, switching between unhurried, unmetered passages and a subtly swaying backbeat. Before long, however, the guitarist was throwing off fleet runs and venturing far afield harmonically, onceagain swept up in the exuberance of the moment.” – Chicago Tribune

There’s so much going on tonight (see schedule here)Â that even if you go out early and stay out late, you won’t be able to catch everything. Â I guess you could call that good news for Cape Ann’s music scene. Â More good news that Dan King is back in town playing with KBMG tonight at Dog Bar.
It’s also good news is that if you play your cards right, you can get to a lot of shows because they start at 6, 7, 8, 9 and the Gary Backstrom Band at 9:30 at the Rhumb Line.
Dancing to the Gary Backstrom Band would be a perfect way to end an excellent night of music.  Tonight Gary’s got Michael Thomas Doyle on drums.  Hopefully you’ve seen Doyle on guitar with Chelsea Berry (check out this video).  He’s just as good on drums.  See him in the Gary Backstrom Band video below at Harbor Loop last summer.
Oohh, I can’t wait for Harbor Loop concerts to start up again …Â I once asked Doyle which instrument he likes better. Â He replied, “Do you have kids?” “Yes.” “Which one do you like best?”
Point taken!

I moved here from Iowa. Â Maybe all those songwriters should move here. Â T Max, editor of The Noise Magazine, might be hiring. He has a new song about pets check it out here:

Well maybe all our talk about taking kids out to hear great music didn’t fall on deaf ears (pun intended). Â Plus there’s another bonus: the fact that some shows start early means you can get to more shows in one evening.
Weekend starts tonight with Just Like Newman at 7pm at Shea’s Riverside in Essex.
Dave Sag has been starting his Rhumb Line Blues Party at 8 instead of 9 for a couple of weeks now.  This week he’s got Steve Chagaris & Justin Quinn Band.  Check out this video from a few years ago:
Boston rock star Charlie Farren (lead singer/guitarist for The Joe Perry Project & Farrenheight) has emerged as an outstanding solo acoustic artist, who has always been known for great songs and great singing. Â He proves why as the featured guest on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes, which premieres tonight at 6:30pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.
You may remember that a couple of years ago, Charlie teamed up with Jon Butcher (another Boston rock star – see Jon Butcher videos here) to form Farren, Butcher, Inc. (FBI). Â Perhaps you remember their spectacular benefit for the Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team at Cruiseport!
Here’s a sneak preview of tonight’s premiere with Charlie singing his smash hit You Are The Only One. Â Watch and you’ll know why he’s a star!
After you catch the show tonight at 6:30 there are excellent live music choices in town, making it very hard to choose. Â They’re all free and they start at 7,8 and 9, so you could try to catch some of every show. Â Check out the complete live music schedule here.

from the New York Times story: “The harbor in Gloucester, Mass., part of the Northeastern fishery declared a disaster by the Commerce Department last fall.” photo: Gretchen Ertl for The New York Times
The home page of today’s New York Times website features a story on Gloucester’s big debate about what to do with our waterfront (see story here).
Mayor Kirk is quoted a number of times promoting her vision of our port supporting both fishing and marine science, saying some of the $150 million Congress might appropriate should be used for “Programs that might attract those other uses that allow you to maintain a smaller fleet, and maintain an infrastructure for that fleet, and sit side by side.”
Everybody who’s seriously working on attracting marine science to Gloucester knows we need more than a port.  We also need a thriving cultural economy in order to attract the workers that power marine science.  Most of these workers are young, single PhDs who work very long hours and want to go out after work — and on weekends — for food, drink and music.  They want to feel surrounded by culture.  These people think they want to live in Cambridge.  What they may not know is that Gloucester has a burgeoning cultural economy.  Just look at all the live music available this weekend — and it’s supposed to be the dead of winter!
We’ve got momentum. Â But in order to grow a sustainable economy for Gloucester’s long-term, we have to grow our cultural economy a lot more. Â That’s where you come in. Â Think of Gloucester FIRST when planning what to do at night and on weekends. Â Not sure where to eat? Â Check out this HUGE list of restaurants. Â Check the live music schedule. Â You’ll likely find music for every taste. Â Want to enrich your life and the lives of your kids? Â Check out this impressive list of galleries, studios, museums, theatres, etc. Â Think you need to drive to the mall? Â STOP! Â Check this out and think again.
The secret to growing our cultural economy without losing our soul is to honor our past and embrace our future.  That’s precisely what Fred Bodin does.  His store honors our past by helping to keep the core of our history and culture alive.  And now, he’s taken to filming the future.  Here he is filming Jon Butcher with Dave Brown, Dave Mattacks and Wolf Ginandes at Jalapenos on Tuesday singing Sam Cooke’s classic Change is Gonna Come — how perfect it that!  Boston rock star Jon Butcher moved to Gloucester.  Let’s get out and support his decision, prove him right, boost our cultural economy and — most importantly — have a blast doing it!

This just in from Chris Langathianos (Chelsea Berry’s manager)
Regrettably, the coming storm has made it necessary to cancel both the Friday and Saturday Chelsea Berry concerts at the Shalin Liu Performance Center. Â The shows have been rescheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 1st and 2nd and tickets will be honored for those performances. If you are unable to attend those shows, Rockport Music will issue refunds on previously purchased tickets.
And this from Shalin Liu’s Karen Herlitz, Director of Marketing at Rockport Music:
Rockport Music Announcement
Rockport Music Concerts Re-Scheduled Due to Weather
Due to the impeding inclement weather, Rockport Music announces that both concerts this weekend (Friday, February 8 & Saturday, February 9) with singer-songwriter Chelsea Berry are re-scheduled for Friday, March 1st and Saturday, March 2nd.
Ticketholders will be contacted via email by the Rockport Music Box Office next week to exchange tickets. Please note: The Box Office will be closed on Friday, due to the weather. Please check our homepage for updates on other concerts this weekend.
Box Office phone number is 978-546-7391.
Here’s what they didn’t say: There were still tickets left to the Chelsea’s Friday show, so that probably means you could still get tickets to one of these shows in March. Â If you don’t have tickets yet, I say call up and get them now before everybody else figures this out (remember, you heard it on GMG FIRST!)
If you’re not sure about whether or not you want to go, watch this video from her new CD:

The queen of breakup songs nails it with this inspiring, honest, uplifting love song that celebrates a true, working relationship.  My Heart is only one of 10 excellent songs on Chelsea’s stellar new album Devil and the Deep Blue Sea  (get it here), officially released last night at a packed, upbeat party at Shea’s Riverside in Essex.  Aren’t you glad you have tickets to see her at Shalin Liu this weekend?  (More Chelsea Berry Videos here.)
Now get out there tonight and enjoy all the great live music before the storm hits.  See the complete live music schedule here.

In fact there’s enough music over the next few nights that it’s gonna be hard to choose where to go out this week. Â Here’s the complete live music lineup to help you figure it out.
(For those of you who have just tuned in, “LOL” stands for Law of Life. Â Click here to see the first 11.)
Everybody’s looking for somebody to blame — especially for last night. Â First there’s the power outage. Â Even though the official line still makes vague reference to an “abnormality”, you can bet people are scrambling to nail somebody’s ass — or “hold them accountable” to use the latest PC term.
You’ll be blaming yourself big time if you don’t get VIP tickets to see Henri Smith featuring Charles Neville this Friday. Â It’s the best dinner / show / Mardi Gras party deal around. Â Best of all, you can avoid feeling guilty because you’ll be helping to send local YMCA Teens on their service-learning trip to New Orleans in April. Â Oh, and Henri won’t be lip-synching.
The older I get the more I realize that casting blame feels good, but doesn’t accomplish much — sort of like masturbating.
Blame is best left to songs.  Chelsea Berry knows how to write a great song that lays blame.  And you can bet she won’t lip-synch when she sings it at her  Shalin Liu concerts.

I’m guessing nearly every music lover in Gloucester is as thrilled about Jon Butcher’s decision to move here as they are about T-Max’s doing the same a couple of years ago. Â This week Gloucester celebrates Jon’s choice in two big ways: Jon’s on the cover of the February Noise Magazine, which should hit the streets tomorrow. Â And he’s also Allen Estes’ guest on Local Music Seen, which you can see tomorrow at 6:30 on Cape Ann TV Channel 12. Â Here’s one of Jon’s songs from the show. Â Love his version of the blues!
BTW: You can see Allen tonight at Jalapenos 7pm with Brown, Mattacks & Ginandes (early enough the bring the kids).  And if Jon is in the audience, it’s a good bet that Allen will ask him to sit in.  Then check out Steve Caraway at Dog Bar and finish up with Henley Douglas Jr. at Rhumb Line.  Not bad for a Tuesday night in the middle of winter!  See full live music schedule here.

I wouldn’t call this a heat wave, but it’s actually above freezing outside for the first time in a while and there’s plenty of live music to be had all over Cape Ann tonight — with most of the shows early enough to bring the kids. Â See the full lineup here.
If you haven’t been down to the Landing in Manchester for Will Hunt’s open mike, this might be a good night.  Perhaps you can ask him to reprise his big move at the beginning of this video from the Rat in 1984 (Will’s on guitar & lead vocals)

Even though this is a blog — and a blog is supposed to be an immediate YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST medium — people have been telling us we should talk more about what’s happening the day after our post because they often read the posts the next day. Â We get it. Â Not everybody sits at a computer all day — and even some of you who do have bosses that want you to get some work done, not surf the web all day. Â So here we go:
IT’S A BIG FRIDAY NIGHT on Cape Ann with music for every taste.  If you play your cards right, you can get to at least 2 live shows.  Start out with Linda Amero Menage a Trio at the Franklin  or Mia Chung, Elisabeth Ann Larson and Soo Bae performing all three of Brahms Piano Trios at Shalin Liu in Rockport.  Then finish up with Ned & The Big Babies @ Rhumb Line.  Plus there’s plenty more for nearly every other musical taste.  See the full lineup here.
Here’s a video for all you piano, violin and cello players of Brahms Piano Trio No. 1 where you can follow along with the score:
And here’s one of my favorite clips (if a bit wobbly) of Ned & the Big Babies. Â Don’t you just love that groove! Â Ned is always right there with you and he’s one of those great bass players who plays bass like he LOVES it, not like he’d rather be playing lead guitar.
