Hi Joey,
On our last visit to Maritime Gloucester, there was lots of activity going on. The Building Center had a crew installing a new specimen on cabinet in the lab building (made of recycled pieces fromtheir old kitchen display), and Jay McLauchlin was rounding the edges of the new handrails on the wharf with a router. The whole place is going to look awesome for the Schooner Festival this year!
Enjoy!

ART NEWS DOWNTOWN FROM CAT RYAN
Editor’s note: When I posted this yesterday I forgot to take my watermark off which my blogging software does automatically for me. Al these photos were taken by Catherine Ryan-
Hi Joey
Phil Cusumano, artist/captain, and volunteer juror for the 2013 HarborWalk Public Art Challenge administered by the Committee for the arts, stopped by to inspect the public art in process on Parsons Street. The artist, James Owen Calderwood, was being filmed for an interview by Lisa Smith for Cape Ann TV. Dale Brown of the Committee for the Arts was there, too.
Jason Burroughs who is teaching with TAG is volunteering some hours yesterday and today for James’ project.
Though difficult for painting, the off and on rain does provide opportunities for visiting. Last week there were business meetings, here with Sarah Garcia Harbor Planning Director.
Today looking out from City Hall, peering past the high school kids cleaning, the bank, Parsons, and on to the harbor.
James visiting the Hive.
While there, we were privileged to witness GREAT news hot off the press and an intensity enough to match their vibrant space! TAG team members wrote and were awarded a $10,000 grant. Congratulations all!
Pictured are David Brooks(TAG Director) Emma Johnson(Forest Foundation Intern), Alex Barrett(Forest Foundation Intern) , Satomi Nishimiya, Rachel McClenagan, Rebecca Siswick Graham (Tag Open Studio Manager), Chrid Boudrow(TAG Assistant Director) , Lauren Horne, and Greer Viau. Also Not pictured is Katie Flores (Forest Foundation Intern) not pictured.
They were heading over to the Farmer’s Market and David promises to send in names and more information. They were also tracking down Mary Ann to share the news; she was at Maritime Gloucester with the Art Haven campers partnership week.
Next time we’ll head down Parsons over to see the permanent public art installation at Maritime Gloucester museum. The twelve foot diameter compass rose is being installed on city property where the HarborWalk crosses onto Maritime Gloucester. Two artists installing new public art downtown and connections—very exciting news.

Aaron Snider works on a prototype frame for our new informational kiosks. The kiosks will line the walkway from Harbor Loop to the Harriet Webster Wharf. Each kiosk will describe a facet of life associated with Gloucester Harbor. Thanks to the City of Gloucester for help with this exciting project.

American Eels are the latest addition to the creatures in our Aquarium. Come by and check out the rock crabs, the skates, the sea ravens, and much more!

Our museum shop will be getting a facelift. Details are still in the works, but expect to see something like this. Many thanks to Monty Lewis Designs for his work on this and so many other things!

Power Nap From Al Bezanson
Stubby sez___
When you’ve been patrolling the wharf all night, standing daytime gate duty and greeting ARDELLE’S passengers you gotta catch forty winks when you can. Even in the blazing sunshine. Especially when you’re 72 in human years. Such is the life of a Maritime Gloucester Volunteer. Not complaining, mind you.

Maritime Gloucester Initiates a Sea Scout Program
Maritime Gloucester is proud to announce that it is starting a new Sea Scout “Ship” effective immediately. It has been many years since Cape Ann operated an active Sea Scout group for youth.
The Sea Scouts recently celebrated its 100th year anniversary when Governor Deval Patrick declared October 8th, 2012 as the official Sea Scouts Day in Massachusetts. First inspired on the waters of the Massachusetts coast, the program is a national coed outdoor program for young adults ages 14 to 20 that promotes knowledge of our nation’s maritime heritage and provides young people with positive opportunities through hands-on maritime education, training and experiences. The Gloucester “Ship” would serve the North Shore and be a part of the Yankee Clipper Council, BSA, Inc.
“Sea Scouts is a perfect fit for Maritime Gloucester” says Geno Mondello, who directs the dory shop at Maritime Gloucester and served in the Gloucester Sea Scouts as a teen. Maritime Gloucester’s mission is to inspire students and visitors to value marine science, maritime heritage and environmental stewardship through hands-on education and experiences. Located on the waterfront adjacent to the Coast Guard Station at Harbor Loop, it offers boatbuilding and repair, rowing programs, maritime heritage artifacts and exhibits, sails and education aboard the Schooner Ardelle and marine science education and research in biological and physical science classrooms.
According to Amanda Madeira, former Captain of the tall ship Ernestina, who will serve as the Skipper of the group, “I am eager to work with young men and women from the area who are interested in connecting to the sea and developing maritime and marine science skills.” Ms. Madeira is a licensed schooner captain and marine science educator at Maritime Gloucester who has worked extensively with youth on active sailing and seafaring programs.
“We are very excited about the addition of a Sea Scout program on the north shore,” said Laura Moriarty, District Director of the Yankee Clipper Council. “We look forward to working with their team to support a strong program in the historic port of Gloucester.”
