My View of Life on the Dock
It was such a nice day on Monday, had to take a walk around Maritime Gloucester.

You can tell it’s spring when the gig rowers and volunteers have flocked to Maritime Gloucester to get their boats back in the water.
From our friend Mary Barker. She was down at Maritime Gloucester yesterday morning as the Gannet was being lowered into the water.
The Ocean Alliance research team will be chatting live from the Dominican Republic. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the humpback whales that feed off of Cape Ann and ask all your SnotBot questions.
The Event is FREE, please RSVP to reserve your seat. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/snotbot-live-tickets-57096562355

And a pretty schooner she is, despite her generally decrepit state. Essex shipwright Harold Burnham, Mary Kay Taylor, and a crew of friends picked up the 1911 schooner in Maine over the weekend. Burnham and Taylor are planning to restore the knockabout to her original splendor and when completed, the Sylvina W. Beal will be the oldest fishing vessel in the harbor.
Stopping by to take a few snapshots of the Sylvina Beal I ran into Maritime Gloucester Education Director Amanda Madeira and Education Coordinator Kelsey Bradford, along with Plum Cove fourth graders at the “crab lab.” Don’t you just love everything about Maritime Gloucester?!? There is always some outstanding maritime-related educational program or event taking place. We are so blessed to have this wonderful resource in our community!
Note- the Sea Pocket Aquarium has reduced hours after October 13th. For more information, visit the Maritime Gloucester website here.
The Science Channel was filming an episode about the Vikings today. The show features the ship Polaris, a reconstruction of an original Viking coastal fishing vessel. Polaris is docked at Maritime Gloucester.
Viking Ship Drops Anchor in Massachusetts
By Sean Horgan
ESSEX, Mass. (AP) — Cape Ann’s fleet of vintage row and sail vessels has a new addition, one that hearkens back to mists of Viking heritage forged in the fjords of western Norway.
The Polaris, a 37-foot reconstruction of an original Viking coastal fishing vessel dating to 1030 A.D., has made its way across country to the Essex Shipbuilding Museum from its birthing boat yard on Fidalgo Bay in Anacortes, Washington.
The plan, according to owner Stuart Boyd, is to berth the Polaris this summer at Maritime Gloucester, where it will be available from early June on for short public rowing trips, private charters and corporate team-building outings throughout the inshore waters of Cape Ann.
“We want to be an inspiration for small groups working together and having fun at the same time,” said Boyd, whose company is named Norsvald after the ancient Norse word for “power from within.”
If you had the opportunity to see the schooners docked at Gloucester’s gorgeous new floating dock, located at I4-C2, know that it was constructed by Beacon Marine Basin and installed by Brett Ramsey’s company Ramsey Marine and Dock Construction. The floating dock was created by Gloucester Maritime and the Schooner Festival Committee to provide schooners with a convenient place to moor.
Schooners Bluenose II, Columbia, Tree of Life, Brilliant, and When and If, along with the Tall Ship Lynx
The new dock was well utilized during the three day Schooner Festival event. By late Sunday afternoon, there were a total of five schooners, as well as the Tall Ship Lynx, moored at the floating dock!
The dock will be removed within the next few weeks, to be reinstalled next August for the 35th Annual Gloucester Schooner Festival.
Schooners Columbia and Tyrone moored at the floating dock.
Gorgeous morning brings big crowds to the boulevard for Gloucester 34th Annual Schooner Festival Parade of Sails. Color announcing is always excellent Photo Left to right: Laura with blue phone- assuming husband Jim spotting and calling in- major intel and committee work from both; Daisy Nell-great musician, singer, author and maritime gloucester historian – no wonder her color is so crisp and clear; and Mike Costello, former Cape Ann Chamber Pres. and co founder pushing event to Labor Day weekend. The city, Schooner Festival committee and sponsors do a remarkable job! Look for 1623 Studio broadcast (Cape Ann TV)- will add link here when available

This event sounds fun, and for a good cause.

On Wednesday it was such a nice afternoon decided to take a walk to Maritime Gloucester’s wharf.
The Massachusetts Whale Trail “is a special collection of museums and attractions, whale watching, and historic sites and tours with a connection to whales.” Capt Bill & Sons, 7 Seas Whale Watch, and Cape Ann Whale Watch are included.

Naturally, Gloucester had created a version on the HarborWalk which you can find on line or on the trail at marker #36 right by Tonno Restaurant, Gloucester, MA. Whale watching is beloved here in town. The Gloucester HarborWalk has whale watch information, points of interest and a tab to all the local whale watching companies.”Most offer daily whale watching trips from April through October.”

When O’Maley 6th graders study Gloucester and visit the HarborWalk, the student thank you drawings featured whale tails and spouting whales. It’s common for local kids to be invited to birthday parties on whale watch trips. Donna Ardizzoni photographed and wrote about her Right Whale sightings from shore spring 2018, and more whale sightings around town. Parsons Street wall Mural (by the Fish Net HarborWalk street mural) was painted by local kids under the direction of Cape Ann Art Haven and features a great whale.

Ocean Alliance headquarters is located in Gloucester. Kim Smith posted the announcement for its most recent National Geographic special.
Maritime Museum (opening May 26) and Cape Ann Museum are included on the new Whale Trail map. Cape Ann Museum collection includes Hartley’s study for Whales Jaw Dogtown

Stores along Main Street and throughout Gloucester’s neighborhoods have art and goods inspired by whales. Look for hand carved wood sculptures at Willow Rest. Savour Wine & Cheese, Gloucester, MA
Amanda Maderia, director of education programs at Maritime Gloucester writes, “Confirming Iain’s comments about believing the whales seen off our coast are likely Right Whales: We have observed some incredible plankton tows the last two days. From a few passes from our docks with our net, the sample has looked pretty clear most of the winter, but as you can see from yesterday’s sample, it looks almost blood red thick with Calenoid copepods, a huge food source for the North Atlantic Right Whale.
Looking at the overhead shot, the bucket on the left is from our plankton tow, and a close up of that to follow. This is what one looks like under the microscope.
The plankton haul was discovered by Waring School students who come to Maritime Gloucester once a week for the spring semester. They use it as their field station for John Wigglesworth’s oceans and climate course.
