Chickity Check It- The Gloucester 18 Blog
Kristen Grieco a former writer for the Gloucester Times has a blog about The Gloucester 18 and teen pregnancy.
From the Blog-
Kristen, a former reporter for the Gloucester Daily Times, first broke the news of something strange going on with the Gloucester High teen pregnancy rate in March 2008, when only 10 girls were pregnant and rumors were surfacing of a clique becoming pregnant on purpose. She is originally from the Boston area and has an M.S. in Journalism from Boston University.

Chickity Check It!- Elyssa East’s Dogtown:Death and Enchantment in a New England Town
From Josh Brackett-
If you care about Cape Ann and you want a good read, get hold of Elyssa East’s new book, Dogtown: Death and Enchantment in a New England Ghost Town. It’s a real page turner and features many local characters.
Also, could you list CapeAnnPolitics.org in your blogroll? Not much traffic there now, as this is a slow season for politics, but there will be more as we get into the warmer weather. See especially my Cape Ann TV interview that explains what it’s about. CATV gives permission for any use as long as it’s not commercial.
Thanks, JB
A Simple Formula for Pricing Artwork
Paulie Frontiero sent me a link to this blog post on how this person prices thier artwork-
Lori Woodward writes-
Pricing artwork is one of the most complex tasks that emerging artists face, especially when they first begin to work with galleries. It’s easy to see by reading articles and books on art marketing that the opinions of the experts vary.
To make it even more complicated, we artists sometimes price with our emotions. Some artists overprice their work in order to impress viewers, hoping to make the artwork look more valuable. Sometimes this works, but usually only when the collector is naive or when the artwork is spectacular and gets the attention of serious collectors. When I price with my emotion, I tend to lower my prices because I feel sorry that the collector has to spend so much. Now, don’t get on me for this … it’s the truth. I’m an empathetic type, but I need to be careful to not price my work based on how I feel about it or collectors. In other words, I need to look at pricing objectively.
Putting emotions aside, let me share a simple formula that many of my professional artist friends have used when first starting to sell their work. I still use this formula. Remember that pricing reflects your position and reputation in the art-selling world more than what your art looks like. If you’re relatively unknown to collectors and don’t have many credentials—such as having placed in competitions, shown with a well-known gallery, or had your work published—you really can’t get the same prices as artists who do have those credentials.
When you’re first starting out, it’s a good idea to make your work as affordable as you can while being able to cover your costs and make a small profit. Don’t charge so little that you don’t break even. Remember that galleries often take a 50 percent commission from sales, so you’ll have to take that into consideration.

I’m curious if this makes sense to any of you artists out there.
Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

My buddy Christina is at it again- her latest sketchbook posting is full of tugs and a nice story about the watches on each one.
I would absolutely love to see her come to Gloucester next summer and do a residency in Rocky Neck. To see our Gloucester boats get the Christina Sun treatment would be one of the highlights of my year.

Chickity Check It!- Marty Morgan Pots

Dear Joe,
I’ve enjoyed reading Good Morning Gloucester and seeing some great photos!
I wondered if you’d be willing to mention my studio as a source of holiday gifts. I’ve been making pottery in Gloucester since 1979 and have a loyal following here. I’m always surprised, however, by the people who say they’ve been driving past my place for years and finally stopped to visit. Any help in getting the word out would be appreciated. You can check out my website to see the work I do: www.martymorganpots.com . I’ll be open Thursday, December 17th – Sunday, December 20th 10 am – 4 pm each day and then by chance or appointment. My prices are very reasonable for high quality porcelain and stoneware pottery.
Thanks for all you do for Gloucester!
Marty Morgan

Monkeyfist (seated and facing away) Bowsprite and Tugster Visit Gloucester
What a great visit I had from water bloggers From The North and South over the past few days.
Yesterday we went by Charlie’s Place for a great breakfast in which they all took turns mispronouncing linguica. 🙂
Many of you saw the lovely Bowsprite take her harbor swim in the cold Gloucester harbor water yesterday and know I’m a huge fan of her artwork.
Also along for the big waterblogger meet-up was Monkeyfist and Tugster. I’ve been reading their blogs for a long while now and what is absolutely insane to me is that I never knew that Monkeyfist is actually a woman. I had assumed that she was a he.
Tugster and Bowsprite hail from New York’s sixth borough (Tugster’s term for the Waters of New York) and Monkeyfist comes from Maine and does the awesome CascoBayBoaters blog. You can see Tugster’s blog here
They are all fantastic and if you like GMG you should really check out what these birds are doing.

Chickity Check It!- 2010 Gloucester Fisherman Triathlon

From Janda-
Hello everyone,
The new website for the 2010 Gloucester Fisherman Triathlon is up and running. Next year’s race date is August 8th and we’re working hard to make this event much bigger and better than the ’09 rendition. The race course has been redesigned so you can expect a much less congested bike route and a true 5k run.
For any of you who are planning on racing in the Pro/Elite wave or know someone who is, we’re tentatively looking to add a $4,999 prize purse for next year, with pay out going 5 deep, so spread the word. This wave will be open to all licensed pros and elite age groupers. We’d like to attract a high quality field and to turn this event into the most competitive short course triathlon in New England.
Registration opens on 11/15 so mark your calendars. I expect the race to sell out before the new year.

Winter is a great time to learn a new skill you want to use in the warmer months. Whether you’ve always wanted to be able to join those easel jockeys out at Halibut Point on warm summer evenings, or make sketches of places you visit on vacation, I can help you develop the skills. I hold a drawing class on Tuesday nights from 6 to 8 p.m., and a painting class (any medium, including pastels) on Saturday mornings from 10 to noon.
Although I don’t hold regular gallery hours during the deep winter months (it’s commonly known that most retail is pretty dead between New Years and Tax Day) I’m still available to open the gallery for private viewings by appointment. If you would like to stop by and say hello, or have a particular painting you would like to see, please give me a call at 978-281-2803, or you can drop me an email at
If you’re not aware, I was a resident artist in Dinan, France for the month of December. I’m posting articles about my travels, my work and sightseeing on my blog. You can find it at
