Did you know about all the amazing classes and programs offered by Rose Baker Senior Center? Look up! The exterior view from Rogers incorporates new panels based on art by Juni Van Dyke to express the vibrancy generated within this Gloucester institution.
Fine artist Juni VanDyke resides in Cape Ann and has been the stellar Director of the arts program at Rose Baker Senior Center since 1993.
The figurative mural series feature some of the many classes and special performances and events available through the center: yoga, balance & fitness, performances, art, dance, computer, and bridge.
Looking forward to a monumental Juni Van Dyke mural on the vertical wall “1” bring her color mastery and original work downtown, and break up the blue blocking.

I love Don at Island Art & Hobby. I stopped in recently looking for something he didn’t carry. He immediately went onto his suppliers sites, found what I wanted and ordered it, so I can buy locally and at the same price I would have paid if I had ordered it online. In addition to a great selection of art and hobby supplies, there is also something for the wee ones.
Here is Colleen with some of her charming little students. Colleen’s little ones classes are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:15 – 11:15 at Island Art & Hobby ($12). If you have a budding little artist in your midst, bring them over and let Colleen nurture their creative side. For more info, call 978-879-4511.

I’ll be teaching an origami class at The Hive (on Pleasant Street) on March 14 at 7PM!
The theme this time will be Easter and Passover. Models on our menu to fold include:
I will have a few more options available to chose from, for both Easter and Passover themes. That will include a cross (for Christ’s death and resurrection), frogs (one of the plagues leading up to the Passover), a Torah scroll (which contains the account of the Passover), etc. Unfortunately, I haven’t had time to fold and photograph examples of each for this post, but you get the idea.
As usual, please contact The Hive to register, so we know how many people will need supplies although one or two latecomers are fine too!
To summarize:

The theme this time will be Easter and Passover. I’ll post photos of some of the models we will be doing, as soon as I pick them out… I’m thinking maybe a cross for the religious side of Easter and a bunny for the secular side of Easter, and I haven’t picked out the Passover designs yet – I have a book with lots of Passover-themed origami that I have to peruse to make a good selection!

This young artist of the week is a very talented 14-year-old photographer named Sarah. Sarah does digital and darkroom photography, and did a great series of graffiti photography last fall for the TAG gallery opening [one pictured below]. Above are some of her photos on display at Nights on the Neck last summer, but you can see more of her work at the TAG gallery at 180B Main St.
If you know of a young artist that should be featured here, email dawn.gadow@gmail.com with a short description and a photo of some of their work!
This week’s young artist is Caroline, shown above with her book from Art Haven’s bookmaking workshop this week. Caroline has taken all kinds of art classes in everything from fractal art to summer playcamp, and she can’t wait to be a part of the Teen Artist Guild when she gets a little older. She told me she really likes to take things from around her house and make them beautiful by repainting and redesigning them!
Also, she made one of the prettiest shields on Lord of the Rings Day (not sure if that’s what you should be looking for in a shield, but I think it’s pretty great…)

This young artist of the week is a very talented boy named Jason who painted this interpretation of Winslow Homer’s Two Men in a Canoe on a toolbox that he built himself. Jason picked out this painting himself and, I think, did a beautiful job of making it his own. What a cool piece of artwork for him to have and use for a long time!

This young artist of the week is a very multi-talented boy named Ivan who made this incredible embossed monster in this week’s Metal Tooling class at Art Haven! Ivan has already taken art classes in a variety of mediums, and it’s always exciting to see what ideas and creatures come out of his creative mind next…
