International Dory Races June Events This Saturday The Eliminations At Niles Beach

image

Saturday, 8:30 a.m., Niles Beach – The Elimination Races will be held to determine who will represent the US vs. Canada on June 18th.

If you’ve been watching the GMG coverage of the International Dory Races and the building of the dories at Geno Mondello’s shop or if you want to share part in a great Gloucester tradition-

Head on down to Niles beach Saturday morning for the elimination races.

It’s a great thing to take the family to and you can register to become part of the action, you can buy t shirts, get row hard or row home bumper stickers.

Here’s the scenario- you pack the kids in the car, go to Last Stop Variety, grab a cup of coffee and one of their incredible muffins (blueberry and morning glory are awesome) and then go to Niles to catch the action.

Dory Prep Day- Under 32 Degrees But These Great Community Folks Got ‘Er Done!

Thanks To Laurel and Jimmy T For Getting Us The Photos-

The Dorys don’t just maintain themselves.  It takes a group effort to keep these boats in racing shape.  The email was sent out last week to all the members of the International Dory Race organization and I’m sure when they sent out the invitation to join in and sand, powerwash and paint the dorys that no one imagined that it was going to be under 32 degrees at the end of March. But that’s what mother nature dealt.

I remember that morning wondering if they were going to cancel and reschedule but as you can see from the following photos- the work took place.  Those who showed up should be applauded for their efforts! Photos and captions from Laurel Tarantino-

Laurel added in a new email-

We only got the bottoms painted on Saturday, as the temperatures were too low for anything other than that.  Boats are all sanded and ready for “Dory Buff” which we hope to slap on tomorrow.  Hopefully we’ll get it done, because we want to launch them asap.

and another Report From Jimmy-

Once again we were pleasantly surprised by the strong showing on Boat Prep Day. Unfortunately, it was too damn cold to paint the boats! So…. we’re going to do that *tomorrow at 4 p.m.* Anyone who can spare an hour or two, we’ll be at the Eastern Avenue Storge facility from 4 to 6 p.m.. *Come on down and lend a hand.*
All the hard work got done, thanks to Erik Dombrowski and Damon Cummings bringing all the tools and supplies we got all the boats scraped, sanded and bottom painted.  Now all we have to do is slap a little paint/linseed oil on the decks and roll the buff on the outsides. Should have it done tomorrow and ready to launch this weekend!

Thank you all! Joe Novello, Kieth Pallazola, Marge Robertson, Laurel Tarantino, Patti Page, Leo LaRosa, Jeff Muise, Gina Lampassi, Nancy Dudley, Mike Harmon and Ray D’Amico. Forgive me if I left anyone out. All the elbow grease and good MoJo is appreciated.

International Dory Race Report From Celia Robertson

Good morning!

I am the mother of L.J. Robertson and we recently returned from a wonderful trip in Lunenburg for the International Dory Races between USA vs Canada.  Four teams from Gloucester made the trip there, along with some family and friends, including my son and his rowing partner, Randy Parisi.  I have attached some pictures from the event.  The first one is L.J. (left) and Randy (right) crossing the finish line and taking first place in the Junior Men’s Division race.  The other is a picture of competing rowers that were in attendance at the award ceremony from both countries.

I hope to see these rowers recognized for their wonderful job representing the US!

From Jimmy T- VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!

I know your all dying to hear that again!

Well, this Saturday, May 1st, is time again to scrape and paint the dories before we put ’em in. Anyone who can spare the morning, or just an hour or two, we need all the help we can get to make light work of it. Last year we had a bunch of folks turn out and we got out of there by noon! For those of you who didn’t know, we’ve relocated the dory storage tent to down behind the storage units, at Eastern Ave Storage. As a result we need generators for power, so anyone who can bring one it would be a big help. Also any scrapers or power sanders, bring ’em along.

The Essex River Race is May 15th. Preregistration on-line guarantees entry and a t-shirt, but you must register by April 30th. Any members interested in using one of our boats let me know, First Come, First Serve!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!

I am hoping to have the boats ready to be put in the water by May 8th,  so they have a week to swell up before the ERR, but we’ll need help then too. Anyone who has a trailer we can use, please let me know.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!

June 10th and 11th the Maritime Heritage Center would like our help again, teaching Rockport grade schoolers how to row. Anyone interested in this valuable experience please let me know.

Pick a day you can give an hour or two and make a commitment to help. The International Dory Race Committee is only as good as we’re all willing to make it. Please help out and make a difference. The recent small success we’ve enjoyed is because of all of you who have pitched in and contributed. Thank you. You know who you are. And you know who you aren’t!

Love,
Jimmy T.
P.S.
As most of you know, thanks to your support, I may be going away on a long vacation soon! Please help the Board of Governors keep things running smoothly in my absence (they do all the REAL work anyway!).

Joey Ciolino and Kyle Edmonds Take First Row Of The Season 2010

It’s that time of year again- Dory Rowing Season has officially begun with the launching of the racing dories last weekend.  I know I’ve said it a bunch of times on these pages but the $50 for the entire year that it costs to use the Dories is the best value for participating on Gloucester Harbor going.  Here’s the link on how you can get involved for a mere $50-

Jimmy T Is A Finalist For Survivor And Needs Our Help!!!!

We’ve got to put the full weight of our community behind one of Gloucester’s favorite Sons- Jimmy T!  He needs our support to get on Survivor.  Please copy the url of this post and send it to your friends and family members to also vote for our boy Jimmy T.

vote here- http://www.cbs.com/primetime/survivor/casting_call//

Jimmy is not only a great guy but he is one of the DOERS around town.  You know, the 2% of people that make 80% of the cool stuff happen.  He volunteers a ridiculous amount of time along with help from others to make the International Dory Races what they are today and continuing the great tradition.  He truly deserves to be on the show for a whole slew of reasons.

From the Survivor Website-
