“Let the Music Take You!” Photos and video of the student concert at St. Ann School

On Thursday, May 31, St. Ann School had it’s “Celebration of Art”, which included both a show of visual artwork produced by the students (which I covered yesterday) and a concert in which all the students participated. Here are some photos and video!

Some excerpts:

Some students waiting for their turn…

Several students also read essays they had written about what the American flag means to them.

Car Launches Into Side of House On East Main St. Across from Last Stop Variety On The Corner of Mt Pleasant and East Main

I have no idea how fast this car could have been going but it had to get over a decent embankment and still have enough velocity to stove in the house.

Hope everyone is OK.

Gloucester Harbor In the 60’s Photos From Geno Mondello

Community Stuff June 3, 2012

Good Morning Joey,

I have had 3 different customers suggest that I email you regarding my newly opened business on Washington Street.

I have had an Antique/Collectibles Multi-Dealer shop in Ipswich for 5 years, and just this month (May), moved it to 57 Washington Street here in Gloucester.  I have changed the name from Rose Cottage, TO…

JUNQUE & DISORDERLY.

I’m very happy with my new space and I’m even happier to be in Gloucester.  I moved from Wakefield  to Gloucester exactly 2 years ago, so it’s a pleasure to have my business so close to home now.

I would love to get the word out that my business "exists" in Gloucester.

Best Regards, Cheryl Conly JUNQUE & DISORDERLY

Sarah Slifer Dance Happenings Summer 2012

image

Sarah Slifer and Olivia Powell in Serenade, photo by Ziggy Hartfelder

Hello friends of dance,

I’ve got a bunch of dance happenings this summer, and they seem to be tidily thematic around dance heritage. It’s as if I planned my year before hand, but in fact it’s because ideas are sticky.  From preparing to teach dance history last semester, to drafting ideas for a residency investigating the role of legacy in the creation of new work, to making a new piece that honors my deep dance roots in ballet, 2012 has been a year of looking back, and forging ahead.

The new piece is a duet for myself and Olivia Powell, recent Tisch graduate and new member of Atlanta Ballet. Serenade, yes, to Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings  (first movement), is a giving-in to the beauty and power of the music, the memory of the Balanchine choreography that I watched on videotape 1,000 times when I was growing up, and the depth and transformation of the ballet vocabulary in my choreographic work. The piece is romantic without the schlock, and packs surprises within the classical underpinnings.  We hope to also present the piece with live music from two pianists – stay tuned for details!

AND this Saturday I will be performing in some dances by Ina Hahn, a former dancer with Doris Humphrey among other big names in American Modern Dance, in program of her work at the Cape Ann Museum.  Watch me steal fire from the God as Prometheus, and play basketball.  Not at the same time, of course.

Hope to see you at a performance or two!

-Sarah

Ultramarine Allison ~ Carol

The beautiful French ultramarine blue of the Allison ~ Carol. The word ultramarine is derived from Middle Latin ultramarinus, meaning “beyond the sea,” because it was imported from Asia by sea.

The Allison ~ Carol lobster boat in the travel lift at Rose’s Marine.

From wiki: Ultramarine is a blue pigment consisting primarily of a zeolite-based mineral containing small amounts of polysulphides. It occurs in nature as a proximate component of lapis lazuli.

Last of The Eastern Rigs From Jon Campbell

Jon writes-

I spent a lot of time around Gloucester over the years. As you’d leave out of the harbor, I used to see a small Eastern Rig tied up at the end of Rocky Neck past the railway. Got to thinking about how the old-timers felt about those boats, made a song.

Down here in Pt. Judith the ‘Roanne’ ended up at Mystic Seaport, and the "E Carl Rice " got cut up and put in a dumpster.

Was looking at your photos of American Eagle and thought I’d see if you wanted to use this song to put together a montage piece using some of your old pics.

Got Alan Estes to join us out at the Astoria Fisher Poets Gathering last year, but he didn’t make it this year.

Drones Club is the private club for Pt. Judith fishermen, has toilet seats from long gone boats nailed to east wall.

I’m supposed to play up at Harbor Loop this year, not sure when, here’s a last video of a song dear to our hearts down here at the water’s edge in RI.

Only In Ipswich From My Boy Doug Brendel

Funny Ipswich book by “The Outsidah”

What do you think about your hometown?
Only in Ipswich, a new book by Ipswich Chronicle columnist Doug Brendel, makes humorous observations on life in Ipswich from the perspective of a newcomer.
Cartoon-illustrated by the author, Only in Ipswich includes a complete year’s worth of “The Outsidah” columns, plus the columns Brendel wrote that his wife wouldn’t let him turn in.
“Don’t forget to mention that I included very poor-quality sketches of all five selectmen,” Brendel says. OK, there, we didn’t forget. His sketches also include a mosquito in a Patriots cap, a fisher cat driving a school bus, a map of Ipswich constructed out of breakfast foods, and other oddities.
“I hope the book makes people smile with recognition,” the author says, “as they see Ipswich in a fun new way. I think it might also be something anyone on the North Shore might like to send to friends or relatives out of town, to give them a glimpse of why we love it here.”
The book is available at local Ipswich businesses and on Amazon. You can follow The Outsidah at Outsidah.com.
