Announcing “Cape Ann ReImaged”

image
Gloucester, MA, June 29, 2012:  Local artist Clare Higgins is pleased to announce the launching of “Cape Ann ReImaged.”
“Cape Ann ReImaged” is a series of digital art works depicting some of Cape Ann’s best known icons and traditions, with a special twist. While Cape Ann has long been a favorite subject for artists, from Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper to many artists of today, Clare has chosen to explore what might have happened if Renaissance, abstract and pop artists had visited the area. “Cape Ann ReImaged” depicts Motif No. 1, the Greasy Pole, Man at the Wheel and more as they might have been envisioned by these artists.
Clare is originally from New York and moved to Gloucester in 2004. She is a writer and digital artist who enjoys creating combinations of classic and modern material. Her play Queer Bent for the Tudor Gent (a Shakespearean version of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy) won two competitions and was performed on stage in Sydney, Australia and New York City. Her published works include a Gilbert and Sullivan-style satire of Seinfeld and humorous pieces imagining how Shakespeare would react to modern technology.
One of Clare’s digital artworks, Cats on the Jatte, based on Seurat’s Sunday Afternoon on the Grande Jatte, was featured in the 2009 Cape Ann Notecard Collection. Cats on the Jatte is part of her “Modern Art Cats” series, feline interpretations of famous art works.
In keeping with her love of mixing seemingly disparate styles and substances, Clare turned an eye toward Cape Ann’s signature events and landmarks and was inspired to imagine how such artists as Da Vinci, Picasso and Warhol might have depicted them. The result is “Cape Ann ReImaged.” If you’d enjoy an innovative way of viewing your favorite parts of Cape Ann, take a trip to http://www.cafepress.com/capeannreimaged.

Hi Joey!

Big Mikes Bikes and I are co-sponsoring a "float" for the Horrible’s Parade to promote safe, fun bicycling here in Gloucester. Would you kindly post the poster/info on GMG?

Mil grazie! Viva San Pietro!

Cyclists wanted!

image

I’m inviting ANY and EVERYONE who cares about a POSITIVE CYCLING PRESENCE here in Cape Ann, to participate in this year’s Horrible’s Parade.  I have chosen the (rather trite) theme of Superheroes: as in, "Be a hero, ride a bike!" or "Able to avoid death in a single commute!" or  "Save the planet, ride a bike!"

This is a family friendly float & parade, and ALL AGES are WELCOME! BE CREATIVE with costumes or signs. BOB trailers, trail-a-bikes, baby seats are all welcome.

If you’ve never walked/ridden in the parade, you’re in for a treat. The route is long: starts at the HS, winds around to the Boulevard, through town, back by the train station and the Rhumb Line and down Centennial Ave, and back to the HS.  There are a lot of spectators, so I figure it’s a good time to show our strength in numbers, and promote the healthy lifestyle of bike riding.

DETAILS: July 3rd, 5:00 pm.

Show up at Gloucester High School Parking Lot with bike(s) and friends and family. Costumes, helmets, face paint, signage (strapped to your back? on/in your trailer?) promoting bike riding. You may want to bring snacks/drinks.

Parade starts at 6:00 pm. (Finishes around 8?)

If you have ANY QUESTIONS or IDEAS, please call or email me.

Hope to see you on a bike!

The best Fiesta T-shirts (especially for geeks)

The new geek-oriented shop (G33K) at 130 Main Street has opened! They don’t have their full line of items in stock yet, but among the things they do have are T-shirts. Among their many prints are these great Fiesta-themed designs, held here by the store owner, Allen Chamberlain:

Let’s look at those closer up. The one on the left is for those of us who are nostalgic for the good old video games like Mario Brothers:

The other appeals more to the Italian spirit:

But the coolness of these shirts isn’t just in their design.  They are actually printed right in the store while you wait, so you can choose the color and size of the shirt, and if you are lucky you might even get to look behind the scenes and watch the shirt get printed and then “cooked” to make the colors last. Here are some shots of one of the Greasy Pole shirts being printed:

Then it gets “baked” to fix the pigments:

All of this in a matter of maybe 15 minutes.  And he can print custom T-shirts with the same process, although getting your home-made computer art ready to print can take a bit longer, apparently.

They also sell other things related to video games, role-playing games, etc., but I was told one of our other blog contributors is preparing a post about the store in general, so I won’t go into detail.  However, I couldn’t help wanting to highlight these great shirts this weekend, and the high-tech in-store process behind them!

Nice Flotsam! From Bill O’Connor

Hi Joey,

This floated into the cove (the tube is sealed) and it seems like an expensive piece of something.  It’s made of stainless and I was thinking it might be a stern ladder.  Can you post the photo to see if anybody lost it overboard?  The wind was blowing from the SW when it floated in so it could be from Cohasset for all I know. If this is yours contact me through the comments…

Enjoy!

E.B. White Quote of the Week From Greg Bover

From the deck of the sloop Linnet in Biddeford Pool ME.

“If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy. If it were merely challenging, that would be no problem. But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.”
E.B. White (1899-1985)

image

A graduate of Cornell University, White joined the staff of the New Yorker magazine in 1927 and spent the rest of his working life there writing almost innumerable essays, short features and the humorous “Block that metaphor!” fillers for what is often described, in literary circles at least, as the best magazine in the world. White also wrote children’s books in the forties and fifties, including Stuart Little, The Trumpet of the Swan, and the much beloved Charlotte’s Web, some of the best reading aloud material ever published. White’s 1959 update of William Strunk’s Elements of Style continues to be must reading for anyone who hopes to write clearly. E. B. White was step-father to the baseball writer Roger Angell and the father of famed wooden boat designer Joel White. E.B. won the Pulitzer Prize, the Wilder Medal, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
