Beth Costanzo and Kids Unlimited are holding a Benefit for the Sawyer Free Library’s Childrens’ Room
Hi Joey,
Beth Costanzo and Kids Unlimited are holding a Benefit for the Sawyer Free Library’s Childrens’ Room. I am hoping you will post this poster as often as possible.
This is a benefit, therefore Beth and myself will not be profiting from this event. We could really use your help promoting this event. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the Library and 20% of Kids Unlimited’s gross sales during the event will also be donated. The poster is self explanitory, with other things being added each day. We hope to make this a WOW day for all the Kids. Thanks as always for your help.

Mary Rose Vintage Design
This new vintage store on Main Street has already gotten some GMG love, but my series on second-hand stores on this side of the bridge would be incomplete if I were not to cover it too!
Mary Rose Vintage Design (269 Main Street) opened this summer. Hours are Tue – Sun: 10:30 am – 5:30 pm. It doesn’t have a big sign our front yet, but it is located roughly across the street from Sequined Fan and Pearls, and has a chalkboard sign out front on the sidewalk:
Jackie, the owner (who happens to be from Australia), has a great sense of design and a distinctive aesthetic that you perceive as soon as you walk in the store. Besides having an interesting assortment of vintage items, she has them arranged in little vignettes, often featuring “mildly creepy baby dolls”. Jackie’s friend Zach helps out in the store, and shows up in one of the photos below:
Main Street in Gloucester really should be known as a destination for second-hand and vintage stores!

[NOTE: WE’LL START ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS IN SEPTEMBER.]
We get together on the last Thursday of every month to narrow down the field and decide the winner. After that meeting, we announce a list of Finalists by posting them on our Facebook Page.
A few days after we post the Finalists on Facebook, we’ll announce the winner! Lots of times we’ll host a party for the Finalists where we’ll hand over the $1,000 micro-grant in person and in cash.”

Gloucester HarborWalk Tulip Tree Image to Travel Around the World
Recently Joey was contacted by The Field Museum in Chicago about a GMG post from May 2012. They were interested in acquiring an image of mine from a post about our beautiful HarborWalk Tulip Trees, planted at St. Peter’s Square.
Tulip Tree at the Gloucester HarborWalk Butterfly Garden
The Field Museum is currently developing an engaging new scientific exhibition on the topic of Biomechanics that will debut in the spring of 2014. Led by the curatorial efforts of Field Museum Curator of Zoology, Dr. Mark Westneat, the exhibition will explore the science of looking at living things as machines built by nature and evolution. One of the topics presented includes wind and how the leaves of a tree change in the wind.
I selected Tulip Trees for the gardens not only because they have a lovely ornamental bi-color effect when the leaves catch the wind, but primarily because they have a storied connection to Gloucester history. Liriodendron tulipifera was one of the primary woods used for tall ship’s masts, and because much of the wood from which the CB Fisk organs are built is Tulip Poplar (thank you to Greg Bover for the information about the Fisk connection to tulip poplar!). Tulip Trees are also a caterpillar food plant for the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly!

Seaside Garden Club 2013-2014 Speakers Schedule
Kate Wilwerth from the Seaside Garden Club writes ~
Don’t miss the Seaside Garden Club’s opening program on September 10th at the Manchester Community Center. Social time begins at 7:00 and program begins promptly at 7:30. Light refreshments will be served.
Garden Design for Decades by Betty Sanders. Gardens should never be a burden to us. What we want in our 20’s and 30’s is not what the same as we want in later years. You’ll learn how to keep your gardens as your needs and abilities change. It’s a matter of plant selection and design, and can pay dividends for decades.
We are thrilled to have Betty Sanders back to present this program. Betty is a Massachusetts Master Gardener with a degree in organic chemistry and a well-respected garden speaker. Currently serving as vice-president of the Bay State’s 150-member Master Gardener Association, she said she gives lectures that “combine my knowledge of gardening and chemistry” Betty is nationally accredited flower show judge. She has studied gardening everywhere from Arnold Arboretum to the New York Botanical Garden and the New England Wildflower Society.Visit Betty’s website: http://www.bettyongardening.com/
We have a terrific line up of programs for this year! If you haven’t joined yet, membership is only $25 for the year. You can join at the September meeting. Guests are always welcome for $5. This year we have two terrific workshops! Note: Workshops have a supply fee and are limited to members only. Don’t miss Bert Ford’s Home Decor Demonstration – we will be raffling off his creations!
Debbie DiGiovanni, Sarah Dean and Gayle Masiero

We invite you to become a member of our club and enjoy our monthly programs which feature interesting guest speakers and creative workshops.

Phi Kappa Sigma Back Again For Lobster Rush Week
Its gotta be a dozen or more years running the men from Phi Kappa Sigma come down to Captain Joe’s for Rush week lobsters.
Tradition. Gotta love it!
If you’re a prospective pledge and you don’t go with PHI KAPPA SIGMA you really need to reevaluate your whole college existence.
Just drop out and become a garbage man already because you’re not college material.
Here they are back in 2008-

I thought MIT was primarily an engineering school but apparently they have their marketing down pretty good too!

Auditions for Honors Youth Choir – Sept 12 & 19
Honors Youth Choir
Auditions for Honors Youth Choir will be held on:
- Thursday, Sept. 12th at the Rockport Baptist Church 4:00
- Thursday, Sept. 19th at Ascension Memorial Church – Ipswich 3:30 followed by the first rehearsal.
Honors Youth Choir is sponsored by Chorus North Shore.
Students pay no tuition.
Ages are: 10 thru high school.
If you have any questions, please call Sonja Pryor [978-356-4713] or
Mary Sepich [978-468-2841] or [mssepich@verizon.net]
Over the years, Chorus North Shore has worked with local area schools to promote choral singing by inviting students to sing with us for credit, and by offering scholarships for graduating seniors who plan to further their interest in music. But, our strategic plan required a more focused approach toward educational outreach.
As a community arts organization, we are particularly sensitive to the cutbacks in funding and support that have steadily eroded the music programs in schools throughout the North Shore. The Honors Youth Choir of Chorus North Shore is a fully funded program allowing children aged 10 through high school the opportunity to learn and perform choral masterworks along with Chorus North Shore, and present extraordinary concerts on their own.
By establishing The Honors Youth Choir of Chorus North Shore, we are able to accomplish several goals for Chorus North Shore:
- provide an avenue for young singers to learn basic vocal techniques and ear training
- introduce young singers to a life-long love of choral music
- offer an opportunity for a children’s choir to work with a premier adult chorus and orchestra
- reach out to a new audience in the communities we serve
The Honors Youth Choir is selected by audition. The students range from ages 10 through high school, and must attend scheduled rehearsals and concerts. The Chorus North Shore artistic director, Sonja Dahlgren Pryor and associate conductor, Mary Sepich bring their experience as life long educators and musicians to the planning and development of this special group.
