Pet of the Week-Adira
Hello! I am a sweet, meek and mild-mannered cat. I am more of an introvert, so I take a little longer to get use to new friends, but I have a very gentle soul. I am at the Cape Ann Animal Aid (CapeAnnAnimalAid.com), located at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter, Four Paws Lane, Gloucester.
I arrived here after being found as a stray and never claimed. I am looking forward to having a forever home. I love soft napping spots, sunny windows and I love bird watching. I have a pretty brown-and-black coat. I am looking forward to having a nice lap sleep in and someone to love me.
Oh! I almost forgot to tell you – my name is Adira! Please stop by and visit me soon.
You’re OK Get Up. You’re OK. You’re OK. Get Up. It Just Scared You Honey…
Did you hear the thunk? I mean straight up couldn’t lay a more solid forehead plant on that bar.
And then the mother chuckles a little before she tries to convince the kid that he didn’t just get completely annihilated.
Total compassion out of the mom right there. She ain’t raising no softie!
Define Getting Bundled: see video
Is this your move?
Like when your kid gets destroyed on the playground do you give them the old “Shake it off” routine?
I feel like there are two completely different camps on this. Mothers that would be crying harder than the child and coddling them and then other moms that will pick the kid up, give em a boot in the ass and tell them to run up that slide til they get it right.

Downton Abbey: That’s All Folks (Until Next Year…)
Season 4 of Downton Abbey is over, and as much as I love to complain about its soap opera excesses, I’m gonna miss now it’s gone. I’m already looking forward to next winter, when the millions of us who watch this show can once again spend January and February with the Crawley family and their servants. In Season 5, will viewers get to see Mary’s decision about which one of her suitors to marry? For my money, I think it will be the Pigman. Mary will steal him away from Edith and together, Mary (Lady Pigman to you!) and her man will raise pigs and make so much money for Downton Abbey by selling bacon rashers that the old home place will never be in financial trouble again.

New England Boat Show: Dazed and Confused
Wow, what an unbelievable amount of boat stuff all in one place. If you put all these boats in the water the ocean level would rise at least a few inches.

Cape Ann Marina has just way too much cool stuff going on. If you have not had breakfast at the Mile Marker Restaurant lately, order one of the Eggs Benedict and don’t forget the home fries. (Menu here.) These are not your ordinary home fries. They do some kind of magical double cooking of them so they are soft on the inside and crunchy but not greasy on the outside. I could just eat them alone for breakfast but their Benedict sauce has just the right amount of creamy goodness, and their crab cakes … oh wait, they also have a pretty nice marina, swimming pool (buy a punch card!), and they’ll fix your engine. You have to click through their entire web page and dream about summer.
Anyway, why did I label this post New England Boat Show: Dazed and Confused? Find out by clicking more below:

What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? Old Sloop Coffee House ~ Saturday, March 8, 2014 Time7:30pm
What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? routinely sells out Old Sloop Coffeehouse. Get your tickets early!
What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? is like an alchemical experiment. The band fuses and integrates different genres, theories and ideas, creating new recipes to unlock hearts and unify a room. In one set the ensemble can travel from an acoustic coffeehouse to New Orleans soul, from gothic blues to a Middle Eastern desert or the woods of medieval France. Named after a Victorian children’s game, and anchored by the “haunting, chameleon-like voice” (Metronome) of singer-songwriter front-man, Brian King, the band spins new fairy tales and steeps them in folk noir and neo-cabaret. Many songs are bustling with memorable characters like a boy who turns into a cartoon or a woman who rescues herself from a tower, while others, pure and vulnerable, “deftly explore themes of love, sexuality and identity.” (Bay Windows)
Born in Gloucester, Brian King grew up with a love of the mystical. Enamored with The Wizard of Oz, King couldn’t decide who we wanted to be more, Dorothy or the Wicked Witch. Throughout his teen years Brian fell in love with the music of Siouxsie & the Banshees, Kate Bush, and later Leonard Cohen, Laura Nyro and Joni Mitchell. His diary was documented in piles of cassettes containing hours of original music recorded on a Tascam 4-track.
Here is a video of What Time Is It Mr. Fox? performing Cyndi Lauper’s song She Bop at the Cloud Club in Boston.

Sweet Happenings At Appleton Farms
Over the years I have spent many hours picking fresh produce with my twins and nieces in the expansive fields at Appleton Farms. Our weekly trips could best be described as mini adventures. Each week we began in the barn, reading the current weeks list of allotted share items, before heading out into the fields with our baskets, clippers, and containers. Sharing stories and memories from my childhood in my grandparents garden with the kids while picking our share, was something the kids quickly became accustomed to. They often requested their favorite stories to be retold, and we often talked about recipes that could be prepared by using the items surrounding us in the fields, planning out our snacks and meals for the week throughout the seasons was something we all enjoyed doing.
Many photos of Appleton Farms gorgeous scenic settings are featured in my cookbook “Gifts Of Gold” surrounding the pages of a story I share that is very dear to my heart. Last week during a meeting at the Reservation, I was excited to learned that Appleton Farms will be hosting numerous opportunities for share holders and the general public to visit the Reservation throughout this upcoming season.
I’m thrilled to announce that I will be hosting cooking demonstrations, using freshly picked produce from the fields of Appleton in their barn throughout the 2014 season. GMG will be sharing their events and news throughout 2014 season under Sista’s Dish weekly. This week their season will kick off with all things Maple Sugar! The events are listed below, and they sound amazing for all ages!

Appleton Farms Hosts a Suite of Maple Sugaring Happenings this March
Ipswich, MA – February 21, 2014 – The Trustees of Reservations invites the community to visit Appleton Farms in Ipswich this March to enjoy the sweet New England tradition of maple sugaring. Last winter marked the first season America’s oldest working farm added a sugaring operation to their already extensive farming list, which also includes an active vegetable CSA, a livestock operation with dairy and beef cows and laying hens, an onsite creamery, and haying and composting.
“Maple sugaring is a good fit for Appleton Farms as the 1,000 acre property boasts large sugar maple trees easily accessed by our farm roads, making for easier sap collection,” says Appleton Farms Superintendent Mark Bailey. “Thanks to some retired maple sugarer’s equipment, including taps and buckets and a wood-fired evaporator, we were able to retrofit the old garage as the new sugar shack. And, the farm woodlands provide plenty of downed wood for fueling the evaporator fire.”
The 2013 sugaring season proved worthy. Thanks to some hard work, community support, and a little help from Mother Nature, the farm produced and sold in their dairy store more than 35 gallons of finished maple syrup product. With their first successful season now under their belt, the farm is opening its sugar shack doors to the public this March to enjoy a variety of sugaring programs and events including:
