The Addams Family Musical Tickets On Sale Now

Tickets are now on sale for The Addams Family Musical, that will be performed by the Annisquam Village Players, one of the oldest community theatres in the country, Aug. 4-9, 2026, at the Annisquam Village Hall, 34 Leonard St., Gloucester. Shows start at 7 p.m.

Directed by Terry Sands and Tracie Ewing, the show is based on the The New Yorker magazine, single-panel comic series by Charles Addams, which ran in the magazine from 1938 to his death in 1988.

The show takes place in the Addams’ crumbling old Central Park mansion, alive with dark shadows and generations of dearly departed ancestors who simply won’t depart. When teenage daughter, Wednesday, invites her new boyfriend and his painfully “normal” parents to dinner, what could possibly go wrong?

Quite a bit.

As the boyfriend’s tidy, conventional family steps into the Addams’ gloriously morbid world, tensions rise faster than a ghost through the ceiling. Personality clashes spark chaos, dinner threatens disaster, and the evening takes a shocking turn when it becomes known that the young couple are engaged to be married.

Cue the mayhem.

Between the devotedly macabre and tango-dancing Morticia and Gomez Addams – along with their intense teenage children, an eccentric Uncle Fester, a 102-year-old grandmother (who may have outlived reason itself) and a hulking, chiseled butler, called Lurch, who speaks only in heartfelt grunts and groans – the stage is set for comic catastrophe. But in a good way!

And yet—through zombie ancestors, slapstick torture, and morbid humor — love finds a way. By the show’s end, both families discover that “normal” is relative… and that love conquers even the most haunted hearts.

To Kill a Mockingbird Triumphs at Gloucester Stage Company

The Gloucester Stage Company is renowned for introducing important new plays to New England and often the world. In To Kill a Mockingbird, the company proves it has the same magic touch with a story that since its publication in 1960 has become an American classic. The stage version, written by Christopher Sergel, made its debut in 1990, and won the Pulitzer Prize.

The GSC production of To Kill a Mockingbird is nothing less than a magnificent shooting star streaking across the heavens and with only a month of performances, you must see this masterful interpretation before it vanishes into the night. Every aspect of the production, directed by Boston stage legend Judy Braha, is exceptional. Led by GSC veterans Amanda Collins as the grown-up Scout and Lewis D. Wheeler as Atticus Finch, with Aaron Dowdy as Tom Robinson and Cheryl D. Singleton as Calpurnia, Carly Williams (Scout), Nathaniel Oaks (Jem), and Gabriel Magee (Dill) as the children, the cast is pitch-perfect throughout. They’re supported by an evocative and flexible set designed by Jon Savage and sublime lighting by John Malinowski. The lighting, in particular, effectively sets the mood for each scene, whether it’s the ramshackle courthouse interior or the deep and mysterious woods on Halloween night.

This is a great story masterfully interpreted by an outstanding company. To Kill a Mockingbird  deeply touches our hearts and connect us with the humanity of each of the characters. The GSC production is outstanding on every level, and it is my guess that during the final scene when Boo Radley makes his appearance, you will be among the many people in the audience who feel tears gathering in their eyes.

Cape Ann Whale Watch- Is A Must

Cape Ann Whale Watch: Two thumbs up, 5 star experience, a must do for visitors and locals!  Whether you go alone, with a friend or with your family, Cape Ann Whale Watch will provide an exciting and educational experience. The 3-4 hour adventure on the Hurricane II began with an introduction and safety message, a beautiful ride through the harbor pointing out areas of interest such as Gorton’s and the Paint Factory, and an educational experience throughout. On this particular trip the Naturalist, Christopher Ferrante, educated us on not only the sea life we were searching for but kept the passengers laughing with shots to the Yankees fans, Giants Fans and all other non-Boston/New England sports fans that saturated the boat! Top to bottom, the boat was super clean, including the four restrooms. Hungry? The galley offers tons of food options from clam chowder to sandwiches, beverages and a variety of different snacks.  All in all, the morning trip out to search for whales was not only exciting but educational and, thanks to Christopher, comical. The entire staff from Captain Scott, to Christopher and all the others on board were friendly and full of knowledge. Whether you’re a resident of Gloucester like us or visiting, a trip on Cape Ann Whale watch is something everyone needs to do. Take our word for it!

GEAR I DIG- BOGS TILLAMOOK BAY REVIEW -PERFECT FOR THE DOCK

Down the dock we’re constantly sloshing around in water or herring juice that drips out of the fish totes an inevitably on top of your feet.

If you want to keep your feet dry you have options.

You can wear clunky boots that come up to your knees or calf but when you’re on your feet for 12 hour days heavy boots are just not a great choice.

Enter Bogs.  I discovered the low cut “Journey” style Bogs a couple of years ago and since then it’s all I wear down the dock (and around town for work)  year round.  They are just incredibly comfortable but at the same time keep my feet dry.

Much like my love for Dry Fit shirts Bogs use moisture wicking technology and with the combination of keeping your feet dry from outside elements like herring juice or the water from the lobster tanks splashing all over the place and then wicking the moisture away when you sweat, Bogs just provide an unmatched combination of comfort, dryness level and quality that I just haven’t been able to duplicate with any other boot.

Downton Abbey: That’s All Folks (Until Next Year…)

I grimace because I care…

Season 4 of Downton Abbey is over, and as much as I love to complain about its soap opera excesses, I’m gonna miss now it’s gone. I’m already looking forward to next winter, when the millions of us who watch this show can once again spend January and February with the Crawley family and their servants. In Season 5, will viewers get to see Mary’s decision about which one of her suitors to marry? For my money, I think it will be the Pigman. Mary will steal him away from Edith and together, Mary (Lady Pigman to you!) and her man will raise pigs and make so much money for Downton Abbey by selling bacon rashers that the old home place will never be in financial trouble again.

Thi Linh Wernau’s "You Are Beautiful" Exhibit Review from James Eves

Hi Joey,

Anna and I went to Thi Linh Wernau’s “You Are Beautiful” exhibit at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center this afternoon. On the way over, my mind was wandering with work stuff and other concerns. However, from the moment I stepped into Thi Linh’s world  I was moved by beauty in people, all people. Her art has a profound affect on any who experience it. Walking into the Cultural Center I was impressed by her overall presentation. She has such attention to all details of her work. Like the other patrons in the gallery I took my time with each piece of art. Marveling at the beauty in her photography and the statements of her subjects. I am impressed that many of the people Thi photographed were strangers to her at first and how much they gave of themselves. She has a way of creating intimacy immediately.

This weekend she is inviting visitors to participate in her “You Are Beautiful Polaroid Project”. We found Thi downstairs where she’s set up a photo studio. Anna and I decided to participate in her project. Thi had us make our own “You Are Beautiful” sign and write a statement of why we are beautiful. Coming up with the statement was harder than you might think. Thi takes two polaroids of each person; one she keeps for her project and the other she presents to the participant in a beautiful black box. I  was thrilled by the experience of participating in her art.

I am looking forward to going back in the coming weeks for the other events she has planned.

GMG Gear Preview- KAYALU RAM Marine Grade Gear Locking Suction Camera Mount

Ed and I preview the Kayalu RAM camera mount before putting it to the saltwater test, using it to film The Blackburn Challenge.

I recently bought a Kodak zx-3  Playsport waterproof video camera.  It was the camera that GMG contributor Adam Bolonsky used to tape this year’s Greasy Pole.  When I found out that the camera was only $77 it was an absolute no-brainer.

Last week I used it to film my ride to Gloucester in this video-

As you can see in the video there is a decent amount of camera shake with it being hand held.  I couldn’t use my Manfrotto Modopocket because that is made to sit on a flat surface.

So then I got to thinking about how much cool footage I could get if I outfitted one of my lobstermen with a saltwater resistant type camera and mount and I began my search.  With some advice from Adam Bolonsky I discovered the Kayalu RAM suction mount which uses heavy duty marine grade materials throughout.  A simple mount made from ordinary metal would be useless after it’s first use hitting saltwater.

We plan to use the Kaylau RAM saltwater camera mount with an 8 inch toughbar extension and the Kodak Playsport zx-3 to capture some footage attached to Ed’s Kayak for the Blackburn’s Challenge.

Five Guys Gloucester Burgers $9.23 Double Cheeseburger and Cajun Fries

I’d been to Five Guys in Naples a couple of times but never paid attention to the price as we were on vacation and when we’re on vacation I tend not to obsess over saving money.

Here is the burger I got yesterday morning at 11:00AM  I was the 21st ticket of the day.  The first video will be posted at 8:00AM

The total for a two patty bacon cheeseburger with bbq sauce and sauteed onions along with an order of cajun fries came to $9.23- note that I didn’t get a drink.
Now here’s the thing, the burger was very good.  Way better than McDonalds or Wendy’s or Burger King, but it was also considerably more money.  It took about 7-8 minutes to get the complete order.
I think there are better burger options in town- be it Passports, Alchemy, Dog Bar, Elliots, Topside Grille,  and some people would throw Halibut Point in there.  You can get a better burger with fries at any of these other joints for about the same if not slightly less money.   That’s not a slight to the Five Guys Burger because they are tasty and prepared well.  It’s just when you factor in the pricing there are better burger values for the quality you get.  That’s  a testament to the strong restaurant offerings in Gloucester.  I’m sure there are other restaurants in Gloucester that have burgers equally as good.  If any Gloucester restaurateur that I didn’t mention would like to send in a picture of one of their burgers, I’d be happy to post it for comparison’s sake.

The bottom line is that you should try it for yourself though because it is a different kind of experience and the burgers are very very good.  I rate them better than Fudruckers by a mile actually but I’ve never been a Fudruckers Fan.  If the pricing was just a bit less I’d probably make it a regular stop but I have a hard time justifying over $10 for a fast food lunch.  I’d prefer to get any number of specials around town for under $10 for a restaurant style meal.
For comparisons sake here is a Passports Bacon Blue Burger with sauteed onions and BBQ Sauce and Hand Cut Fries for $8.95
