Baxter State Park
Back from my vacation from Baxter State Park up in Millinocket Maine and although we didn’t see any Moose to photograph, it was a such a peaceful few days just taking in the scenery!

This American Bittern which I’ve never seen before appeared out of the marsh. Not being much of a birder, I looked it up and it’s in the Heron family. If he hadn’t moved I would not even have noticed him, as he blends in very well with the marsh grass!

7:20AM Cleaned the mackerel by head and gutting them and then making cuts every 3/4 of an inch down each side of the fish so the marinade will penetrate.

Next patted them dry with paper towels and placed them in my go-to fish marinade-
soy/ginger/sesame seed/red pepper flakes.

I’ll let them sit in the marinade til 9:30 or so. Check back around 10 for the next update!

PLANTING MILKWEED WITH CAMILLA MACFADYEN AND THE SARROUFS!

Thank you to Dawn and John Sarrouf for sharing their milkweed planting photos. They are visiting their friend Camilla at her family home in Small Point Maine, which sounds like, from Dawn’s description, a gorgeously beautiful location, and ideal Monarch habitat. There are fields of wildflowers, and Seaside Goldenrod grows just as easily in the rocky outcroppings there as it does on Eastern Point. After looking at maps, it appears as if you could draw a virtual straight line from Small Point to Eastern Point. Dawn and friends spotted about ten butterflies yesterday. Perhaps we’ll be the next stop (after the predicted rainfall).
Camilla collected milkweed seed pods and enlisted the Sarroufs to help plant.

Kindness just keeps rockin!
Back in July I had a post about the Kindness Rocks project which I happened to hear about through my friend Stephanie Deltorchio’s blog. Well Stephanie took her kindness one step further and enlisted Mark Cole to get the city’s permission to “plant” a KINDNESS ROCKS garden at Stage Fort Park with the help of her 5 year old grandson Gabriel McQueeney, who worked hard collecting & painting the rocks. They also left a basket with blank painted rocks for anyone who wants to make one. Gabriel also “planted” a few in the playground area for children. What a great lesson to pass on to the next generation!
Stephanie said she fell in love with the idea (as we all did!) immediately and has since contacted Megan the originator and now Gloucester is listed on the Kindness Rocks website thekindnessrocksproject.com. People can post photos of rocks they find or their own on Facebook @TheKindnessRocksProject and can tag their rocks #thekindnessrocksproject on Instagram too. She told Gabe that small acts of kindness can make someone’s day and he really hopes the rocks make people happy! Anyone interested in contributing can certainly drop some rocks off to add to the kindness garden….I know I have a pile ready to go! Thanks Stephanie and Gabe!!

Thirty-four minutes and 6.07 seconds. That is how long I waited in line for one dozen cider doughnuts at Russell Orchards yesterday. And…I’d do it again. My only regret is that some people in line around me had empty wine glasses because they were smart enough to partake in wine tasting prior to getting in line. Me, not so much.
After an afternoon hockey game at Pingree we drove through Essex and into Ipswich to spend some time at Russell Orchards….which thousands of friends.
The boys tolerated the annual sit near the pumpkin photo before we headed into the bar to check out the line. They immediately deemed it too long for them to stand in, but promised to not get the largest pumpkins on the farm if I held a place in line for them. Deal.
The boys picked out their pumpkins, found their favorite honey sticks, and did some drive-bys to check on my progress (or, most likely, to check on how much longer they had to wait for a warm cider doughnut).
Super warm doughnuts in hand, the boys tolerated the annual Russell Orchards Ford Truck photo and then we all meandered down to the pond and barns to see the animals. We checked on the little pigs…and the giant one. We looked at the goats, ducks, chickens, bunny, and one rat. Finn picked up an apple that was already on the ground in front of a donkey and offered it to him….without shoving a finger up its nose. I should explain that Finn had a thing for shoving his finger up the nostril of many a farm animal when he was younger. We read the sign that said, “Please do not feed the donkeys” and did not do it again.
The boys tolerated the annual sit on the tractor photo and we were off.
Forced Family Fall Farm Fun. Check. I was happy that their hockey schedules cooperated this weekend so we could get our farm fun on.
