Lobster Gear Repurposed for Oyster Farming From Bill O’Connor and Cat Cove Tide Pool Touch Tank Webcam
Hey Joey,
Augmenting the lobster catch: Oyster aquaculture in modified lobster traps
I stumbled upon this in at the Cat Cove Marine Lab website and thought you might find it interesting. Apparently the oysters did pretty poorly on the North Shore due to water temp, but my little foray into oyster harvesting was quite different, and completely by accident.
A few years back, we had a party at the house and I bought a bushel of Blue Point oysters that were supposedly being farmed off of Martha’s Vineyard. I prepared half the bushel for the party and the other half I left in the mesh bag, which I hung off our mooring to keep them alive long enough to eat them. Well I eventually forgot them out there and the mooring ball disappeared that winter, so we dropped a new mooring in its place the following Spring.
A couple of years later I was snorkeling out in the cove beyond the mean low tide mark and came across the lost mooring ball suspended underwater on a column of oysters! Apparently there was enough in the mesh bag to reproduce and they just grew down the mooring chain. They literally reproduced themselves out of the bag somehow. The weight of the oysters pulled the ball under the surface eventually. I would see the oyster column occasionally when servicing our moorings over the years, and it eventually just fell over underwater. I still see oysters out in the cove though!
Anyway, I thought you might find this study informative.

Tuesday afternoon as I was leaving Rockport Harbor to head back to the Annisquam River I noticed some chop off in the distance. Assuming it was fish jumping I drove over only to find a large pod of at least one hundred dolphins swimming between Rockport Harbor and the break water.

Some points about taking video-
The more steady you can hold your camera, the more pleasing the resulting video will be. One way to accomplish this is holding your camera very steady. You need to be very conscious of framing your shot properly and keeping the camera steady. the much easier way is to use a tripod, or mount. Using a mount or tripod there is no camera shake and your results will look immeasurably better than if you try to hand hold the camera.
Obviously carrying a huge tripod around can be cumbersome and you all know my feelings on being able to keep your camera gear on you to be able to capture the shots as they happen. So many times a tripod is not going to be the answer.
The manfrotto modopocket which screws right into the universal camera mount and folds flush with the bottom of my camera is my number one camera accessory that I feel can help any photographer achieve much better results, especially with poor light (with good light photography is a snap, you just point and shoot and you don’t have to worry about camera shake because the time the lens will be open is so much shorter).
But for this application I used the kayalu nClamp with the toughbar extension. Literally I screwed the Kodak Playsport Zx3 onto the Toughbar and clamped it onto a bolt that was attached to the mast, framed the shot and pressed record. In this way I could sit back and enjoy the company on the boat and we got a nice video capturing the scene.

Screening of REBIRTH at Cape Ann Cinema 9/11/11
Good Morning Joey,
You are my connection to Cape Ann when I am on and off the “Island”!
I was at the Cape Ann Community Cinema last night and discovered a showing of Rebirth is scheduled 9/11/11.
The film was screened at Sundance 2011, the director follows 5 people effected by 9/11
over 9 +years, a story of love, loss, reconciliation, and promise.. It also is technically accurate in that the filmmaker has filmed the entire site post 9/11 to present in time-lasped fashion.
My husband and I had contributed to the credits in memory of someone close we lost at
Windows of the World in Tower 1.
It would be great if you could post this screening for the Cape Ann Community Cinema..
I meet Robert Newton , the artistic director of CACA and it seems he could use some help

Finally A Solution To Our Raccoon Problem!
If you feel that we deserve your vote you can vote daily through the 9th at the badge below-

After battling and documenting raccoons tearing into our trash time and time again and trying a whole slew of different types of methods to avoid having to pick up garbage left behind strewn all over the walkway we discovered an organic way to deter the little bastards.
Red Pepper Flakes!
Since the Mrs has been sprinkling red pepper flakes all over the lid and top of the trash bags we have been without incident in over a month! Thank god because I’m such a pussy I don’t even want to open the door to club them over the head with a baseball bat and this seems like a whole lot easier method than going all Rambo on them.
Saw this guy in the back of a pick-up truck this morning after being caught in a trap. The owner of the pick-up truck is doing the humane thing and bringing it to the woods where he will pour gasoline on it and let it on fire release it back to the wilderness.

Boom!
I shot up out of bed like a rocket figuring that the maniac (Snoop Maddie Mad) finally figured out how to climb out of her crib and had landed with a thud.
The Mrs, startled said no, it didn’t sound like a small child hitting the floor and we would have heard her wailing.
Then silence and we hear shuffling outside… GODDAMN RACCOONS!
We’ve been having a problem with them for about a month and last week started putting bungee cords over the lids of the trash cans. Little bastards still got into the trash.
