Downtown Construction Update

Last week the footings were poured and now the rebar is in place for the pouring of the foundation.

Note where I placed the arrows on the curled over rebar.  Once the cement is poured, it will form and harden around the curved rebar.  This will give the foundation added strength and lock it all together nicely.

When pouring foundation or forms with rebar it ups the structural integrity of the foundation exponentially.

A short person’s bike for sale!

bikeThis bike is just too heavy for me. I ‘ve only ridden it twice, so it’s in really good condition. I’d say it would be good for a 9 to 12 year old or an adult who’s about 5 feet tall.  Here are the specs. I’m asking $250 for the bike. Give me a shout if you’re interested. Thanks!                       —Sharon

News From Fenway-Frozen Concession Prices

Press Release From Fenway-

GREAT CONCESSIONS AT FENWAY PARK

In the Big Concourse, families will be able enjoy discounted concession items and access to the Best Buy Players Club during the game. Mmmmm… cheap eats!

Big news today from inside the walls here in the Front Office: In addition to having frozen ticket prices for the 2009 season, some of my co-workers over here were able to work out a deal with ARAMARK, our concessionaire at Fenway Park to freeze prices on all concessions sold inside the ballpark!

I got the above email from The Red Sox Front Office newsletter and thought I’d pass it along.

The thing they don’t say is that while they froze the concession prices, they froze them at ridiculously high prices.  It’s like an oil company acting like they would be doing you a favor by locking in your oil price when oil is at $140 a barrel.  Gee, Thanks!

Isn’t a tad bit insulting to try to make a big deal out of not raising concession prices at a place that is already ridiculously overpriced during times of economic turmoil.  Do they think we’re a bunch of dopes?

An Island No More

home_r4_c2With all the book talk lately, I thought I would share one of my favs from Ron Gilson.

Readers of An Island No More will immediately recognize this memoir as no routine historical account of Gloucester. It is a deeply moving essay of an author’s experience of the fishing industry as it affected the everyday life of its citizens. Gilson transports the reader into decades that cover depression, war, prosperity and, finally, decline. Gilson’s story is a poignant personal insight into many vignettes of the characters which fill his historical account. Using the fishing industry as a metaphor for life, Gilson reveals the life of a city over four decades. This historical approach is the strength of his work. Only a native of Gloucester could have written such a memoir.

As I read Gilson’s history, having been away from my home- town over fifty years, I was immediately taken back into time. Gilson’s account rings with such an authenticity, a virtual new experience of that time and place came back to me. In short, this history will engage the reader at all levels of emotion.
